Your Ultimate Adventurer Party Combo?
« on: October 25, 2013, 02:47:50 PM »
What is the ideal combination of adventurer types, in your opinion?
Let's say I can fit 5 or maybe 6 models onto one plastic frame for a boxed game, what should they be?
The Classic Combo here would be Barbarian, Elf Ranger, Dwarf Fighter (or a Cleric of some race), Human Wizard, Human Thief, but if I was running a game of NetherHells I might look to use a Dark Paladin, Necromancer, Assassin, Half-Ogre Barbarian, Warlock, Thief (so amoral, those Thieves) and so forth.

Would the classic combo not include a halfling thief? I like the inclusion of the barbarian. Then elven/gnome mage and dwarf cleric/paladin. Rounding out with a fighter or ranger probably human.

My ideal combo (and I'll freely admit reality could be an obstacle to this) would be to have a degree of customisation, whether it be interchangeable arms or several options. That way the elf could have a bow as a ranger or a staff as a mage. The only fantasy RPGs I play these days are Gloranthan RuneQuest (which has its own style) and Tunnels and Trolls which tends not to have the racial cliches regarding classes. If they were set up such that there was a degree of choice then I'd be far more likely to buy them. All that said, if there were humans, elves, dwarfs, and a tiny, tiny fairy with options along the lines of sword, axe, club, spear, dagger, staff and wand then I'd be in there like a shot.

If you were going for evil adventuring party definitely black guard, dark elf assassin and necromancer, maybe some sort of demon worshipping sorcerer, or perhaps a witch doctor?

With a monk and a bard as an add on or booster pack perhaps?

And if it was an evil bard, give it an accordion or a recorder. :D

For an evil Bard, I wanted to do a Marilyn Manson style one. I reckon Bards who went with Song Spells would have magic wands that they sing spells into ie a microphone, but they could be upgraded to using a whole mic stand ie staff; a Bard who used Music Magic would have a magical instrument (eg 'The Lute Of Searing Licks', 'Bongoes Of Puppetry', 'The Shattering Flute ') and both kinds could use a Booming Box to amplify their spells (takes one whole turn to set up, doubles the effects of a spell, but first action in next turn must always be the activation spell "1,2...1...1..1,2,1,2..." however the Bard could hire a Henchman to do this for him and reduce the time for setup down to the one turn...)

Bards would get a lot of silly spells that are there for the fun mental images - 'Mosh' (increased attacks for Heroes OR all Enemy in adjoining squares to other Enemy start attacking each other), 'Crowdsurf' (Bard may Move over any other models as if squares were empty, but may lose items/gold) 'Daaaaay-oh' (one Enemy model misses a turn while it becomes locked in a Call and Response sing-off with the Bard) 'Strut' (All Enemy must re-roll any attack dice as they are distracted by the Bard's curious movements - requires empty spaces either side of the Bard) 'Bummed Out' (Enemy model becomes depressed by the Bard's terribly sad song and sits down, thinking about it's life choices. Spell may need a better name.) 'Fusion Lick' Searing sonic waves of pure, awesome Bardic Magic fry the victims' brains, causing 1 dice of damage on each model in front of the Bard. Victims' heads explode with glee.
etc

Evil adventuring party - make it something unique and distinctly netherhells.
Always good to turn cliches on their heads if you can.

If they are for a board game then please don't make them variable - single part models (or two parts with a simple plug).  If I get a board game I want to play it immediately rather than spend a week assembling lots of fiddly minis. If it's a miniatures game, then that is somehow a different thing...
The recent plethora of board games through kickstarter have given plenty examples of both good and badly thought out games...

They would be as one part as possible as once you start having separate bits it eats up extremely valuable mould space for little gain. I'd happily do individual sprues of multi-part barbarians, wizards, etc if people paid me to get the moulds made, though!

You now what. There is a severe lack of Good proper size Gnomes of all character archtypes. Reaper ones are huge. Otherworld do only 3 a male/female fighter and an Illusionist thief. Its like a thread over at the OW forums a guy post up a load of pics of his adventurers and everyones frothing over a OOP Citadel Gnome!

How big is a gnome supposed to be, though? They're like the netbook of RPGs. Not as big as dwarves, not as small as halflings... mine were going to be like Yoda, with big heads and pointy ears, although it also sort of makes them look like the Dungeonmaster from the 80's D&D cartoon.

Ok so it's seven figures but my ideal set would be:

Human Fighter, Cleric, Magic User, Thief  and generic/non class specific Dwarf, Elf and Halfling.

A separate set of male and female figures above would cover all bases for the Classic/Basic (pre AD&D) version of *cough* "The world's most popular fantasy roleplaying game"

I can dream right?

This is like one of those questions like - if a tree fall in a forest and no one hears it...
Your universe your rules really.  Personally gnomes for me are shorter tubbier dwarfs with bigger ears and noses

Fantasy: Human Wizard, Elf ranger/healer, Human Barbarian, Halfling thief, Dwarf fighter and Dwarf engineer.

Sci Fi (landing party): Human leader, Alien brute (heavy scaled lizardman), lithe mystic (female human or alien), Dwarf technician, Robot heavy-gunner, Alien pilot (with extra arms... possibly ape-like and hairy).

All of them either sex unless specified.

For somewhere between Dwarfs and Halflings but with typical Gnome features big nose.

Stonehaven made a huge range of gnomes on kickstarter. Probably the most comprehensive range out there. More like little elves though. Smaller than dwarfs

classic party for me would be Dwarf fighter, human cleric, elf mage and Halfling thief. If I had to add two more it would be a half orc barbarian and a half elf ranger. There's no school like the old school
