The Dwarves of the Iron Hills are coming...
« on: August 13, 2012, 10:58:14 PM »
In December a certain movie, the first of a new epic trilogy, will be released. Games Workshop, never one to miss a trick, are of course expanding their LOTR range and will shortly be releasing a shedload of figures to tie in with the new films. These include Dwarves with mattocks. Fortunately for Hasslefree these will likely be equiped with inappropriate plate armour and will resemble Tolkien's vision not at all.

Kev and Sally, my wonderful Kev and Sally, I am aware that Kev based his dwarves on the description of the Iron Hills dwarves in the Hobbit - and I love him for it. To his credit, Kev's "Norman Dwarf" creations remain the most accurate interpretation out there - the most faithful to Tolkien's description of the dwarves. The recent new releases were beautiful and most welcomed, but for all that the range remains incomplete. Indeed, it was  hinted at the time that there was more to come. So surely, with the upcoming movie drawing closer, there has never been a better time to expand your range of Hobbit inspired dwarves even further. There has never been a better time to get those dwarves wielding two handed weapons - and in particular those eagerly awaited mattocks - finally released. How about it? Do you think Kev could get them released by December? I'm sure Hasslefree would benefit from the, ahem, coincidental timing.   :wry:

Please?

Yes.
In the war-torn darkness of the future, there is only Grymn.

Deep Space Nine: Officially not as good as Stargate.

If you field an overwhelming force against a paltry number of defenders, whatever you do, make sure the defenders are not English!

Yes.

Can i convince you to knock out a reluctant adventurer of even smaller stature to go with them?

I suspect there might be an elderly man with staff and pointy hat too... And perhaps a pony.

For me though just the dwarfs.

Okay. Who's been taking drugs? What would possess them to release such crazy figures?

Well, after ROTK I think Peter Jackson is capable of anything. And Dwarves riding War Boars is exactly the sort of thing some bright spark at GW would think was a good idea!

It seems to me that Boars would be the ideal mount for Dwarfs.

But not something Tolkien ever mentioned, to the best of my knowledge.

It may do to the Tolkien estate!

Well, if it does then they should hold tighter reins on the license then :).

I can guarantee that there will be plenty of cool Dwarfs and other races coming out as part of the license... just don't buy the boar-Dwarf cavalry... simples :D

... and then everyone can enjoy the boar riding Dwarfs if they want to.

Sure, I'll ignore them just like I've ignored the more stupid releases in their LotR range. I have to say though, it always puzzles me why people pay big bucks for a licence and then ignore the source material (like buying the film rights to a decent book then making a movie that bears no resemblance to the book beyond a couple of character names). I guess cash really is king. To me, dwarf boar riders are far more Warhammer than Middle Earth. Why pay for a licence to make 'generic' fantasy figures?

I can't remember any more but did the dwarfs ride Ponies in the storyor were they pack animals?
Boar riders sound stupid not only for Tolkien dwarfs but for dwarfs in general. I like the idea of Mantics Dwarf cavalry, more like giant badger-type creatures.

Eragon.  Got less than 10min in a couple weeks ago and said 'F this, none of this is right'

As for dwarves, don't care, not my interest area.

Why do boar rider Dwarfs sound stupid? Boars are stubborn, brave, overly aggressive, loyal to their families and like to eat fermenting fruit and get drunk... it sounds to me that they are perfect mounts for Dwarfs.

For me it's the fact that swine are commonly percevied as dirty animals and to me that doesn't fit with the way dwarfs are, although some may disagree :D . Also dwarfs are a subterranean race unlike boar which are woodland or wild grassland animals. I also used to collect orcs and that may be part of the reason also. Orcs fit Boars more appropriately... damn you GW. I'm not a big fan of dwarfs in all honesty (although I have a small retinue of Chaos dwarfs and recently pledged some moeny towards a Dwarf kickstarter)
Either way people will snap them up anyway just for the sake they are something new and interesting.
