aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
got out the digi cam.  read the instrucions on using macro.  took  4 shots of each entry.
dindnt look too good on the camra screen, so i loaded them onto the pc. where they look evan worse, green and silver blurs  ( i know im not going to be setting the figure world alight with them but you cant evan tell what they are)
Any suggestions any one?  ive had a quick read on the tutorial on taking photos but that dosnt seem to help.
a happy dauber

With macro, keeping the camera still is essential. It would be best to use a timer or remote lead and a tripod...

... but I don't. I just take extra pix.

Also, if you take a large sized pic but keep the miniature small in the pic (hold the camera further away from the miniature), it allows the flash to work without being too close and spoiling the image.

Use additional lighting or natural light if it is bright enough.

...That's all I can suggest.

Oh... I almost forgot... make sure your battery is well charged because low battery makes blurry pix (or it does for me anyway :( ).

I'm far from an expert but I've experimented a fair bit so here's what works for me:

Camera on macro, held by hand about 50cm from figure.

My 'lightbox' is actually two sheets of white plastic, one on the table the other laid against the couch behind, and set in front of the patio doors. I take my pictures when it's overcast outside with the curtains open about 2ft, which seems to let in about the right amount of light.

Hardly the height of precision, but it seems to work!

After that I open the images in GIMP (free image software) and shrink them to either 50% or 33% of the original, depending which looks best. I usually find the shrink to 50% makes them look way, waaaaay better than the original size. Also puts them at a convenient size for posting on forums ;D

If our sculpts aren't quite castable will we be given advice on how to make it castable even if it can no longer win?

Thanks

Okay, here we go!

Closing date 1st October 2012.
Images need to be emailed to picturesAThasslefreeminiaturesDOTcoDOTuk by the end of that day.

Image specifications:
1: Max dimensions 72dpi. 800 pixels x 800 pixels.
2: Images should be a composite of one front shot, one back shot plus sideways from both sides.
3: The front shot should contain a ruler as a scale guide.
4: You need to say what category it is entered in

what would be nice but not compulsory is a brief explanation of where you see it fitting into the HF range and the reason you sculpted it including what you made it from etc.

Up to 2 weeks after the closing date we will publish all of the pics online and set up a facility for voting.

Do not send your figures over yet!

I'm not overly sure about point 2. Am I suposed to create one collage image containing a shot from each of the 4 angles? Or am I supposed to have a sepirate image for each angle? If its the latter can I include close ups of details not seen from these angles? A demo Image of a random mini would really help me out here :D I've posted a WIP PIC of my 4th Entry how I think you want it (minus the ruler and with a width of 600 to comply with the thread rules) in the Comp WIP thread.

I'd imagine 1 of each side. That's just me though and my interpretation.

Reading the instructions, I would suggest it is a single 800x800 picture that is a composite picture of four angles of the same miniature (with the front view having a ruler beside it to show size).

I could be completely wrong but I would think Sally only wants one pic per entry to keep her mail-box from collapsing under the flood of images :)

The category, story, background info etc. just goes in the text of the e-mail. It may also be a good idea to let Sally know your forum name (ie, for me, Inso) just in case she needs to PM you (otherwise it will be e-mails only).

Damn it... Before reading the instructions properly I put my entry in a coushoned envelope and sent it by snail mail. Means no model to take photos of anymore.  :( I really hope that Hasslefree gets my letter and lets me join the competition this way instead. Really sorry for my total lack of following simple instructions.

Is it possible to get an answer from mrs Hasslefree herself, or someone else in charge, that my entry is OK?

I think I failed to read the word composite. That probably means just 1 photo.

I just need to do hair on my entry and make a last couple of tweaks. Just one question for the more experienced types (i.e. anyone, compared to me). I need to fill/smooth a couple of areas, is is OK to use Milliput over the Green Stuff for that?

As far as I'm aware, you'd be better with mixing a softer GS mix, use vasaleen on your tool, preferably a rubber nosed putty pusher. Least that is what i'd do

Milliput is fine... as is a mix of milliput and GS (if you do that you get the best of both worlds).

As a side note, I've just sent my image off today :)

well... ive had anouther couple of attempts with the camara.
then had my normal wrestle with IT gubbins to get an image, ( did it finaly by copying and croping the pics into powerpoint, and saving as gifs)  and sent them off.  I hope to heck that there ok as my only outher option is to just send them by post ( which i wont be able to do realy safely till next weekend now).

I ve realy enjoyed the green stuff bit, and working with the dollies to create "somethin"  i just hope ive managed to get the end bit right.

Oh and Inso  that is a very cute kitten, and dosent it know it!

It took me near two hours to figure out, but managed to make a collage, so that's what I sent in this morning.

Good luck to everyone!

Thanks guys. An hour or so tomorrow afternoon should see me done. All in about 6 days. I think I'm well on for 38th position!   :D  I'll have to make sure the camera is charged.
