Black hair highlighting?
« on: June 04, 2012, 04:45:53 PM »
Hi,

I've never managed to get black hair looking 'right'. Of late, I've been highlighting by adding Bleached Bone to black, although a stunning painter I was speaking to a while back suggested Graveyard Earth. What do FoDders use?

Best,
Mike

I hate doing black hair but when I do I try to highlight with very thin white building up.

I have a tweeter thing now.  I might even use it.  @leadpaintshed if I can figure out how to

Use Coal black from PP (which is a very dark bluey black) then a small amount of ivory mixed in. often using a wash to reducing colour if I feel its required.

I tend to go for blueish tones, toning it down with a bit of bone in the mix, ending with an ice blue and bone top tone.

Black hair is quite "interesting" to paint, isn't it. I'd say make the colours dependant on the miniature. Blue makes it look very cool and slightly unnatural so it's probably more suited for fantasy models Other than that, I'd go for straight up grey to white. Remember that less is more when it comes to highlighting black hair. :)
