Loki MBT and Freya APC
« on: March 11, 2012, 08:25:33 AM »
Kev sent these over to me last night.

Still quite a lot needs doing before they go for 3D printing ...the APC (80% finished) needs hull work and turret detail, the MBT (95% finished) needs detailing work

I might have to get one of the tanks. No more than one though, they aren't big enough for my army.

This is my tank.

Why not? Kev has an army line (Grymn) and has plans for the human equivalent so they will need transport/armour. It is also the natural progression... he's done miniatures so now he is trying his hand at vehicles. I would suggest that it also helps to have Grey Matter on hand too.

They aren't bad either. They look more modern than overly sci-fi but as a generic tank and IFV, they look pretty good so far. I am sure they will look better once the details have been finished.

Freya would be more of an IFV than an APC though...it looks like it was designed for a turret rather than having one slapped on an APC...

This shot shows the approximate sizes.

@ Dwartist..its just something he wants to do.  he got frustrated with time restrictions on making it the traditional way so thought he would give the CAD a go.

I'm confused. I came to this thread expecting to see an Aesir trickster god who likes fire and a Vanir passionate goddess of beauty. And instead I just saw some pictures of a couple of tanks .

The MBT and APC components of the title should have been the give-away ;).

I only ask because there is so much competition out there for vehicles and, for me, Hasslefree's product is pretty unique. Having said that i wish you every success with this new venture and I'll certainly have a few!

Why? I've no idea what those letters are supposed to mean. Honestly. I assumed it was an abbreviation for something but not for tanks.

Main Battle Tank (MBT) and Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC).

I guess it is just like everything else in life...if you know the abbreviations, it is easy but if you don't, they could mean anything. The thing is, when you know them, you expect everyone else to as well :)! Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that.

With me being in the Royal Air Force and my wife being an ex nurse and current nursery teacher, we agreed not to use abbreviations related to our work a long time ago...all three of those careers are rife with them and we could have conversations where neither of us could understand what the other was saying :)!

Ah, unfortunately on the preview/main page, the thread title cuts off at Loki MBT and Freya A....

Wich could be anything. I might've recognised APC and, knowing the pictures were of tanks, I was wondering "Medium Battle Tank? Massive ...?" Would've probably got around to Main eventualy. Thanks for explaining mate :).

Not

You did. This is the virtual re-working of that because I couldn't get the sculpt of the tank as precise as I'd have liked :erm:

I'd really like to see your tank and APC take on some of the design features of your walker. Curved surfaces and panel edges, no rivets, perhaps even a hint of aerodynamics in the design. If they have walkers, the Grymn clearly have materials that are tougher than we have; if they have energy weapons and personal flight packs they must have more efficient/intense power sources. A bit of fancifulness in the design of the tank would imply these things. Maybe the APC can do 200kph on smooth road, and the tank can do 160? Maybe they weigh far less than the modern equivalent do.

I just suggest these things because to my uneducated eye these look no different than the things that you see on the evening news in a bad year. They don't look science fiction.

1 Curved surfaces = not easy in Sketchup.

2 The rivets are recessed, bolts would be a better word. They're where the armoured plates are attached to the hull to increase protection in certain areas.

3 For me, things that look obviously "Scifi" often don't or wont work in real life. I try to make things plausible, hence realistic, and my realism is currently based in the contemporary

Just a thought - can we have open hatches?

I'm designing them open at the moment. All of the hatches are removable in sketchup, by when cast they'll have to be cast on due to cost issues. However, like the walker, I can foresee a more expensive, but more customisable, version being made available for the die hards :D

So what happens when these vehicles break down in the field, or get stuck?  How about a recovery vehicle?  Nah, nevermind, I want something WWII style.

Either of them could have a replacement turret and a crane arm added...it isn't a huge job...

...but couldn't it wait until these are actually in resin before suggesting the next big thing ?
