Robot in the Rain wip
« on: March 07, 2012, 07:19:22 PM »
Hi All.

So a while back I had a go at sculpting and came up with this.  After starting to paint him months ago, I've finally done some more.  I've tried to make him look quite weathered and worn, poor thing.  He does have his nice umbrella though, or maybe it's more a parasol.

Not sure what to do with the base yet.  And I need to do something with the eyes/sensor array.

Comments welcome of course.

I like it !

As for suggestions...

I would change the colour of the brolly so that it isn't as similar as the robot's colouring.
Maybe add a stripe or number so that the body looks a bit more...something (can't put my finger on it).
If you make the brolly a rain brolly (rather than a parasol) and make the base a barren desert base (maybe with cracked earth), it would add to the dejected nature of the scene...hoping for rain in a desert?
The eyes look like they would be a perfect excuse to paint them like gems (like you see on all those Eldar miniatures).

This is truly a little piece of art... I love it :).

Thanks - that's all quite positive.

I like the idea of the cracked earth/barren dessert base.  I might give that a try.

I tried some laser-printed-on-tissue-paper decals so he'd have a manufacturer and part number on the back, but the orange peel surface I give him didn't help matters - it would have worked okay on a smooth surface judging by my tests.  I'll just have to face up to painting something on.

That looks pretty damn good. It maybe needs a tiny amount of lightening up but the way it is shaded is bang on.

I am going to repeat how much I like this, by the way .

That's great!
I agree with inso's suggestions. I think the umbrella should be bright and cheery to contrast with the robot. Some more 'mechanical' markings would work well on the robot itself - some straight lines or stencilled numbering etc.
Excellent work on the base as well.
