WW1 Fantasy Trench Warfare - Salute 2012 - FINISHED
« on: November 28, 2011, 04:04:51 PM »
Thought you might be interested in one of my terrain projects - a WW1 Fantasy Trench Warfare table.  The game will be ready for Salute 2012, and will be one of a number of Frother games.

The basic layout currently is for a total of eight 2' x 2' boards, giving us a 8'x4' gaming surface - although i might add a couple more if i have time (and space) for them.

The bulk of the basic work has been done, and got some basecoating done this weekend - still a lot of detailing, barbed wire trees etc to add, plus the water effects.

Rules will be another homegrown set i'm writing.

The Kindred will be defending their homes, with hobbithole bunkers (the detachable roof sections will have round doors etc and curved trenches.  On the other side will be Goblins, sculpted by Richard Ansell for Frank Hammond, dressed in WW1 German Uniforms.

I've also commissioned a range of WW1 Dwarves (in Russian Uniforms) by Bob Olley, which will be helping the Kindred to defend their homeland!

Couple of pictures of the terrain so far (Goblin lines in the foreground)

Pictures show the table from Left to right

Hopefully the game will attract some more interest in the Kindred.

 :D

I've spent many a long hour frothing over this development

Much goodness Matt, it's really looking fab. I'm looking forward to getting  my own little people fighting on both sides of the battle

I've also commissioned a range of WW1 Dwarves (in Russian Uniforms) by Bob Olley, which will be helping the Kindred to defend their homeland!

They're not going to look like scrunts are they?

Smaller than Bob's scrunts - they will be sized to fit in with Kev's Kindred.

Are the German Gobbo's the ones I found over at Goblin Barracks ? If so they compliment the Kindred nicely

Yup.

I haven't posted links to them, or the figures I'm making, as this is the Hasslefree Board, but they do compliment each other very nicely.

How about adding Austrian-Hungarian Ogres?
Or Ottoman Orcs?

Nah, I can't imagine WW1 soldiers different from the real ones. IMHO.

I've got plans to commission an Ottoman Undead Army - Frank Hammond is going to do Austro-Hungarians (plus French Gnomes). I'm also going to commission some ogre/giants to fit in with things.

Hmm, French Ogres would be cool, have one made with a baret on his head, a baguette under his arm and a glass of wine in his hand.
you know, just the typical vieuw of a typical Frenchman  :lmao:
and if it gets in production I'm buying that one  :woohoo:

This looks awesome. The muddy-water filled crater looks particularly disgusting (in a brilliantly realistic I wouldn't want to go anywhere near it way).  :applause:

Thanks.

 :D

The game is for Salute (the UK's largest show) so I don't want it to look pants - hopefully it will drum up some interest for Hasslefree, and the other Fantasy figures (my own included), while raising a bit of cash for Combat Stress at the same time.  The game I ran last year - based upon the Battlefield Bad Company online series - has raised 575 so far, and i've decided to carry the appeal on this year.

The muddy crater is supposed to be the result of a recent mine explosion, which has taken out a section of the Goblin frontline - it will be unpassable (anyone foolish enough to try will be sucked down into the murky depths).

Managed to pretty much finish the boards over the last week or so - still some more green stuff to add to the hobbit holes, and some detailing inside, but its basically done.

Decided to add some foliage rather than just leave it as a muddy morass - reason being that it is supposed to be the Shire.  Hopefully it looks ok.

Now I need to get on and paint some Kindred to go with my Dwarves.

Had a bit of spare time the other weekend, so thought i'd add another couple of boards to the end of the table -the board is now 10' long x 4' wide,

I wanted to reinforce the impression that the battlefield is ravaging the green and pleasent land of the halfling-folk, so the new boards show less damage than the others - hopefully it works.

On the left of the picture you can see two of the existing boards, with the two new ones, on the right - viewed from the Goblin lines

The first new board (viewed from the table end)

A small lake, rather than a shell crater this time - I might add a small jetty to it.

The crashed plane fits neatly into a socket i've built into the lake - I could have just built the lake flat, but i didnt want a base sitting ontop of the surface - its got a magnet on the bottom, and eventually i'll build another couple of options for different aircraft, or even perhaps a tentacled monster... If I want a game without a crashed plane, i'll just build a small island to fit into the socket.

The second board  - viewed from the table end.

Left intentionally free of defensive trenches, the ground leverl is lower than the other sections, so there is plenty of surface water lying around.

I've also added some more foliage to the other sections, and finished off the ruined building, by the bridge - it has literally been flattened by a direct hit, with only the cellar remaining.  The greenery is all low, and not intended to restrict movement (or transport for that matter).

All done - just hope it fits in the car.

That looks great. Love the crashed plane and it seems like you've got all the options covered with various extras to take it's place. Well done  :applause:

Fantastic work, Matt. I'm really sorry that I didn't have time to make more Kindred like I said I would :erm:
