General Ranting / What is a Cheddarmonger, and why do I care?
« on: November 12, 2015, 05:52:16 PM »
I've been a Heresy fan for years now and I used to be a very active participant here.  Life has steered me in other directions, but I do have a gift for this rabble.

Many years ago I created a website,, primarily to be an integrated online community for miniatures enthusiasts.  Many folks from the Forum of Doom joined that site as as a good alternative to Photobucket or other services that limited and/or censored your pictures.  I've done my best over the years, as time permitted, to keep that site running and maintained.

The software running on that site is coming end of life, so now I really have to upgrade it.  This means I might lose some of my functionality.  My big worry is that links to pictures that are hosted on that site will break, at least until I figure out how to fix it.

I tried to send a notice out to all of the folks who've registered on the site, but I've found that there's very few active members and many of the email addresses that folks had, oh, eight years ago no longer work.

So -- I'm reaching out to you folks.  Do you want to be a Cheddarmonger?  Here's what you get.

  • I'll never charge anybody any money to use my site.
  • You get a picture gallery where you can store pictures of your miniatures and gaming-related stuff
  • You can create content, like blogs, tutorials, or articles complete with pictures
  • You can have a email address if you want!
  • You can be my friend.
  • Cheddarmongers does not and will not have forum/discussion capability.  Keep your inane blather here!

Feel free to reach out to me if you're interested in joining, if you need to update your contact info, or if you have any feedback for site functionality.

Lookout.  Winter is coming to Minnesota, so I might get to hide in my office and resume some of my miniatures painting!

I seem to be unable to upload any images now... I just get this message:

"    warning: move_uploaded_file(sites/default/files/images/temp/2015_2_8 (1).jpg) [function.move-uploaded-file]: failed to open stream: Disk quota exceeded in /homepages/40/d237867745/htdocs/cm2/prod/includes/ on line 693.

warning: mkdir() [function.mkdir]: Disk quota exceeded in /homepages/40/d237867745/htdocs/cm2/prod/gallery2/modules/core/classes/GalleryPlatform.class on line 582."

Is it the site, or am I doing something wrong?

Both!  LOL

The "create content" link for uploading images doesn't work.  You should use the gallery instead...  but now the gallery is broken, so I'll try to fix it.

Sorry about that!  Thanks for playing...

Success!  After fretting for seven years and concentrated sweating for a month, I got the website software updated!  We should now see it working a lot more reliably.  I have a bunch of clean-up to do, a bunch of menu items are doubled, but heck it works, it's being backed-up daily, so I count that as a win!
However, I have disabled the self-registration capabilities -- 20,000 spammers tried to register, and that jacked the database -- so if you want to be a Cheddarmonger, just PM me or email me at david at cheddarmongers dot org.

Hello!  I've finally got off my thumbs and started doing some serious maintenance on the Cheddarmongers site.  If you're having trouble with it, please let me know!

Maybe I'll even start painting again...

What a setback; I sure hope that the courier finds it, or compensates handsomely.

I'm curious; where's my dragon in the queue?

Ideas for New Heresy Models / Re: GWAR

Yes, thread-omancy...
I just saw GWAR here in Minneapolis Wednesday night.  Not sure if you heard the news, but it was the last performance of their lead guitarist, Flattus Maximus.  He passed away sometime during the night as they traveled from Minnesota to their next show in Canada.  Not sure what possessed me to see that show, I'm not a heavy metal fan, but I had a great time.

By the way; my collection of snow trolls really needs to be updated!

Great work!  The Snow Troll is one of my favorite miniatures, but there is significant sculpting to get the parts together and the fur to line up seamlessly, very well done!

You did, however, miss painting his nose!  But I see that a lot.

Great composition, great choice of miniatures!

I saw those pictures pop up on Cheddarmongers, and I'm really impressed.  The photos have a striking quality that seem to bring your figures to life.  Great painting on these!

Amazing work on the texture of the tshirt!  And, there's not much contrast between the shirt and the jeans, so you managed to pull that off masterfully.  Really impressive.

The texture on the left side of the figure's jacket -- shouldn't those be zipper teeth?

Morrowind was a much loved game; Oblivion is pretty cool, too, just didn't really get into my head as much as Morrowind did.   But -- loyal fan -- I'll probably go for Skyrim.

Hmmm, might be a great opportunity for me to get back into things!

Was there a particular theme, or just halloween-ish things in general?

Product Reviews / Re: Paint brush recommendations?

W&N!   Ah, it's coming back to me!  I recall I preferred the standard series 7 over the miniature brushes because the miniature brushes' bristles were too short to hold any decent amount of paint!

Getting ready to start painting again!

I'm going through my tools and supplies, and so far my paint brushes don't look like they enjoyed being in storage.

Do folks have some passionate opinions about brushes?

My resin Libby has been resting peacefully in it's little box, complete with the note from Sally, for years.

I was really excited to see these pictures posted...  yours came out more lion-ish than others.

I know it's been a while -- my Cheddarmongers site has a huge collection of Heresy miniatures, you are welcome to steal from there (with proper attribution, of course)!  If you hit this magical link, it will pull up everything with a "Heresy" tag on it (hoping folks haven't been too lazy tagging things!) --

Now to tackle that huge pile of primed miniatures!

I'm a bit farther behind than the birth of the dragon.  Can I get a couple of updates?  I'm not fretting about the delivery date, but I vaguely recall reading something about paying for shipping and a special Sir Roger.  What's the news?

1:  painter/gamer/collector/sculptor ?

Painter, Gamer, Collector

2:   under 21/21 - 45, 45+

3:  male/female

4:   Looking for cute chicks/ conversion bits/ soldiers / something nobody else makes

Something nobody else makes

5:   UK/ Eu/ Non-Eu

6:   Generally buy from a retailer / prefer manufacturer

Prefer to support the local economy, but nobody local supplies HF, so I prefer the manufacturer

7: how long bought HF?..... less than 1 yr, 2yrs, 3 yrs, 4 yrs+

4 yrs +

8:   Found through recommendation / search engine

Found through Forum of Doom, but I'd been a fan of Kevin's sculpts for years.

9:  Anything we could do better/ anything you think we are doing drastically wrong/ what you think we do so well that makes us better than anyone else?

Fantastic service, and I think it is extra special that you recognize and reward your customers in ways other than simply the value of your products; the little thank-yous and the occasional tribute by naming miniatures after people go a long way to rewarding your customers.

10: Any other comments?

This will indeed be a challenging year, so I wish you all the best.  I have a huge HF wish list, but my unpainted pile is just too large right now.
