Random Chat / Assault rifles
« on: November 14, 2015, 12:19:29 AM »
'Lo all. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the difference between the 'assault rifle #2' and the version the sci-fi troopers have? (Or even post pics?) I'd guess they're about the same size, but I was hoping the former could represent (or be chopped to) a sortuva carbine version.

Adding her tonight probably, just been guesstimating costs.

Did you get my email about the maggotmen, Warren? (@hotmail addy)

I should probably retire that addy, considering how little I check it, let alone use it.

Dayum, Andy. If I could get that kind of skill and character into my finished sculpts, let alone rough sketches, I'd be a happy bunny.

Might be a daft question (especially with that 'Kickstarter' logo right there), but just to get it straight in my head: she'll be part of the KS, right? When will she be added?

I should learn to type everything in one go rather than edit after the fact. :) Anyway, I'd buy that for (more than) a dollar.

I was right, then! Ah well, horns are more easily nicked off than basilean helmets. ;) In fact, your description makes me think about wildling wights for GoT.

I didn't mean strictly historical, though, or full gothic cuirasses.* Mainly, as you say, a basic helmet here, a piece of chainmail there, a few spikes or skull icons scattered about. (They are spooky undead after all) The main thing for me would be that it isn't too obviously designed to be unique, or uniformed, in the way of said undead Basileans. I don't know if I worded that very well, but I hope it's not too unintelligible. :P

*I had a discussion recently with someone who thought the Dark Sword GoT minis look too weird, partly due to the realistic plate armour designs!

One of my worries is that I wouldn't want to see Heresy commit big time into going head to head with someone like Mantic who seem very well established in the fantasy plastics market. I'm not saying Andy couldn't do better than Mantic, but I'm concerned that Mantic have it stitched up already.

Hardly. They may be going gangbusters with Deadzone or whatever, but Kings of War has stalled, and IMO stalled badly, probably thanks in part to that bloody awful Basilean release. They have a handful of 'traditional' fantasy races, and those generally range from odd designs (elves, dwarfs, trolls) to utterly dreadful. (drakons, sisters) I've seen plenty of opinions, people who complain that GW is too expensive but who won't touch Mantic for their mass fantasy army building because the minis are too weird; and I have to agree. Granted, the one army that draws least sneers is undead, which might clash with Andy's skellies, but personally I'd rather have plastic skellies that don't have bits of peculiar armour (whether Mantic, or GW's which are apparently all composed of an unknown bat-obsessed race) let alone all undead Basileans.
(Though that does mean that if I want armoured skeletons, I'd prefer they have armour that generally resembles real world armour, which might not tally with Andy's or anyone else's vision.)

So I voted for those. What else? (No really, I forgot. Need to check)

Gribblies. Always useful for dungeon crawls and army swarms?

Sci-fi troopers, because the wips shown so far are well designed and well sculpted. I don't have much urgent need for a sci-fi human army right now, but if these get released I'm gonna start one anyway.

Minotaur. I think Manbane is still one of the better minotaur minis out there, and I think a sprue or two with 2-3 variations or bits would go down well. Especially if GW keep theirs around for a few more years. (Though, since we're invited to stick our oar in, maybe more manbane proportions than elfbane)

Goblins with hand weapons and shields, for largely the same reason as Shaved Dwarf. Whether plastic or metal, I think the next goblins should be swords or spears, to complement the existing archers.

Voted skellies and sci-fi troopers cos the WIP 3-ups are still dead purty; melee goblins and dungeon gribblies cos the metal ones are great and I have a feeling plastic ones could do well; and minotaur, cos GW really dropped the ball with theirs and an updated manbane in placcy would wipe the floor with them... :p

Would've voted dark brethren if I had a sixth choice. Kobolds, snakemen and orcs sound interesting, but apart from one sketch I half-remember from ages ago, I dunno what they'd look like.

Which hamsters fell off the wheel this time? The ones at frothers or the ones on me tablet?

Really?  I'd had the impression it was a cheaper option...  I'll need to look into that a bit more I think.

You haven't been listening to the Warseer 3D cult, have you? ;)

Maybe swinging around a big ol' sword.  It might not be a terribly original theme, but I've been thinking about Conan-based gaming lately, and looking at the Mullet II I bought at Salute.  I thought if there's one place I'd like to get a long-haired mini to represent the quintessential barbarian, it's the shop of the quintessential barbarian sculptor. ;)

(Also, 'flaming torch version' suggests there are others in the pipeline. :P )

I won't argue with you there. ;)  But like I say, I can't remember what I did to paint the others up similarly; except that all the complications I went to are probably a major reason why I gave 'em a short rest in a box, five years ago.

I won't be going basecoat+dip, but I'll simplify things a wee bit.  No 5-6 step nose highlighting.  No highlighting to white, for that matter. (My CMoN infatuation phase was mercifully short)  And no subtle green underlighting glazes that don't show up unless you hold the thing in your hand and peer closely.
Some of those shades and highlights want to be a bit better placed, too.  Look at the left thigh of the second goblin - what's going on there?

Extra gobbos arrived this morning - it's admittedly been so long since I ordered from Andy that I forgot just how fast the parcels arrive!  And with sweeties, too...

Anyone remember these?

Original limited edition Heresy gobbos, dontcherknow.  I thought I had only the four, but the fifth was hiding in the lead pile.  But apart from painting some furs just after that photo, I haven't done anything with the first four in five years and can't remember at all what I did or used to get them that far.  (There was ghoul grey in there somewhere...)
So, I've ordered the remaining four command & hero gobbos (as you do), and I'm going to strip these and paint all nine together.  Maybe I won't aim so ambitiously this time, and maybe pull the skin colours together a bit.
Should make a nice wee warband.

I get a lot of stuff on brains, some on shells and worm snakes, and almost nothing on worms.  Which I didn't expect.

And one or two things on De Vermis Mysteriis, which I did.

And a photo of a happy little halfling.  And some tyranids.

I've had a few problems with Vallejo paints :( including one of the stoppers popping off in my face (literally) and spraying paint everywhere lol I may have squeezed too hard.

Ditto.   Hence my skepticism.

The dropper system is easier to use when thinning the paint

I never got this myself.

Spent the second week in April painting Salute minis non-stop, and since then I've been painting cowboys and gluing cardboard jailhouses and general stores non-stop.  When I get the wild west game over and done with on Saturday, I think I'm gonna take a week or two.

I think it's a bloody good thing I didn't go, cos 'til now I thought it was on Sunday.

I usually get  few telemarketers phoning during the day, though the 'out of area' message and a couple of seconds of unconnected silence make them easy to spot, so I can put the phone down again before it fully connects.  I did that just now, and the guy called right back to tell me off about my manners!

After a bit of thought I'd go for top right or bottom right. (needs more thought to choose one of those!)  The asymmetry on top left is interesting but too... asymmetrical.  The bottom left starts to look like an effect from Adam West Batman, after a while.
