Questions and Answers / What dissolves (or softens) green stuff?
« on: March 23, 2015, 10:25:57 AM »
I have a Battlefleet Gothic ship I bought second hand and it seems to be around 15% green stuff. I've tried my usual solvents of choice with little to no success. Does anyone out there have any recommendations? As always, thanks in advance for any help.

Questions and Answers / Shading yellows; any tips?
« on: November 26, 2014, 01:05:20 PM »
However I shade bright yellows (usually incrementally adding browns, heading darker and darker) it never quite looks right. I have a Knight Models Flash to paint and I really want the yellows to work on this. How do you all do it?

Questions and Answers / Manufacturers of metal base inserts?
« on: July 20, 2014, 06:10:32 PM »
All my Knight Models DC Comics miniatures have been based with Black Cat Bases street base inserts. I prefer the extra 'heft' they add over resin bases. Unfortunately Black Cat have been having problems of late and are starting to get a poor reputation for filling orders. Does anyone know of anything similar from other manufacturers? Googling has got me precisely nowhere. Alternativels, if anyone knows of BCB stock anywhere, please give me a nudge! Thanks.

General Ranting / Did I miss anything?
« on: February 21, 2014, 01:16:26 PM »
I've not been around for a few months due to a combination of health issues, head being very messed up, work and (finally) much needed holiday. Apart from the departure of Black Scorpion, did I miss anything?

Questions and Answers / Recovering from varnish hiccups
« on: October 21, 2013, 10:02:18 PM »
Generally I've been very happy with Army Painter matt varnish as a final protective coat on my finished miniatures, but I've recently had it go awry on a few figures. In two cases I have figures go satin finish, or even glossy but only on certain parts of the figure! The figures had had days of drying, the can was well shaken and used in a warm, dry environment. The question is, has anyone seen anything similar and is there a reliable way to get a decent matt finish on these figures?

There was discussion a while back about the old miniatures from the Dark Crystal film. Having finally found mine I thought I'd share a few photos as I know some people were interested in seeing them. I hope posting these old (30 years-ish) miniatures in an unpainted state is OK with the mods.

First up, the box fronts. Set 1 at the top, set 2 underneath.

Then the back of the boxes. Both boxes have the same back and show the entire range, painted.

And the contents of box one. There's a 20p piece and a pound coin for scale reference in there (I had very little to hand!). There's Jen, Kira, the Master and a whole bunch of Pod People (one of which is a child with Fizzgig), plus paints, brush, palette and painting guide.

And finally, set two, which includes a Skeksis, Aughra (and her table) and another bunch of Podlings. I seem to have lost the high quality brush from this set...

I hope that little lot is of some interest to someone!

Questions and Answers / Earth tones in volume?
« on: July 03, 2013, 05:06:00 PM »
I have a couple of sets of terrain boards to paint and ideally, I'd like to base coat them in something akin to the old GW Graveyard Earth. Given the volumes involved, I don't want to mix colours for the base coat and I'm certainly NOT going to paint several square feet of boards using tiny little pots of expensive paint. Does anyone know of a 'craft' paint or similar that is available in an earthy tone? Most of the browns I've seen (and picked up) have just been too 'clean'; standard burnt umbers or similar that are very good 'straight' browns, but just lack the naturalistic tones. Any pointers appreciated.

General Ranting / Free RPG Day
« on: June 15, 2013, 07:50:31 PM »
Well, my usual game shop just couldn't get any of the FRPGD booklets, and another shop I went to told a similar story. It sounds like it's been a wash-out in the UK.   :(   If anyone has the Star Wars or Tunnels and Trolls booklets and would consider selling them, pease drop me a PM.

Questions and Answers / 28mm science fiction all-terrain vehicle?
« on: April 25, 2013, 11:57:36 PM »
I'm having a nostalgia kick at the moment and seriously considering running some Star Frontiers (a 1980s SFRPG from TSR) again. One of the staples of the game is the 'Explorer' a civilian ATV. In the game they look something like this:

Now I'm NOT looking for a resin lift of that; I don't mind four, six or maybe even eight wheels, but I would like to try to find something that's more 'van' than 'APC' (so no turrets!). That aside, I'm very open to ANY suggestions (current leader is probably the Governance of Technology Zebu, but it's a little more car than van. Any help, as always is appreciated.

What it says up there. Hope it's a good 'un, mate.

Books/Comics/Etc / Light reading needed
« on: January 30, 2013, 07:19:02 PM »
In a few weeks time I have to go into hospital for a couple of treatments. These involve being stationary while chemicals are pumped into the body over a period of several hours. Due to a combination of distractions and discomfort, I find it hard to read anything too involved. Would anyone have any recommendations for a light fantasy or SF book that's 'unputdownable'? Preferably something in print so I can get a copy easily!   :D  All suggestions welcomed.

Other Mini's, RPGS, Etc / Tunnels & Trolls Kickstarter
« on: January 30, 2013, 07:13:47 PM »
Way back in the 1970s the first RPG I ever played was Tunnels and Trolls. A few years back they issued some revised rulesets (7th edition and the 7.5 edition) which brought a tiny bit more crunch to the game, but increased playability no end. My groups loved it! Now the original team are back doing a definitive 'deluxe' edition. The Kickstarter is already being funded, but there's some fun options there that some people may want to get involved with anyway.

Questions and Answers / Modular gaming boards, anyone?
« on: December 30, 2012, 04:39:25 PM »
It looks like I might be due some money from a work's sweepstake when I get back into the lab on Wednesday. One of the things I've lusted after for a while (and that I can talk about, obviously) is some decent gaming terrain. Modular sections that can be reconfigured and preferably with a hill (naturalistic, NOT stepped). I have to say that Games Workshop's Realm of Battle is, excessive skull-usage aside, actually not that bad. My only real reservation is the 24" sections, when I'd prefer 12" square ones. The skulls are deal-able (sand 'em down, fill the pools with resin 'water') and I can live with two foot sections if I have to. I was wondering if there are any alternatives I should be considering? I know of the Ziterdes ones, but they always look like they're meant to stand alone to me; they don't look like they work well together. I also saw some fibreglass ones at Salute which weren't bad, but had stepped hills and looked a little rough in comparison to others (and had no way of joining them, either).

I should also add that I have no confidence in my ability to build my own terrain. Otherwise I'd try something like this:

As always, any help would be appreciated. Best,

Movies/TV/Music Zone / Judge Minty
« on: November 13, 2012, 01:12:37 PM »
Gothy Beans and I saw the Judge Minty fan film last night. Cracking stuff with production values that seem to way exceed what I'd imagine the budget was. I think any old school Dredd fans are in for a real treat.

I've had my first week off work this entire year and got precisely b*gg*r all done. I've just tried to airbrush some resin scenery and I don't have a decent colour for concrete (and I have LOTS to do, so mixing is out). Anyone know where I could buy more paint, quickly, preferably in the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire/South Yorkshire area?

Eolith/Spyglass / Steve's Vampire Countess
« on: July 29, 2012, 08:56:01 PM »
Not actually Eolith/Spyglass, this is a figure Steve sculpted for Cool Mini or Not, so I hope it's OK to share. Somehow, the face looks... odd, at this size. Any comments are welcome, of course.

Non-FOD minis / Red Box Astrid of the Stones
« on: July 29, 2012, 08:51:27 PM »

I'm not one for posting non-FoD minis (or even many of my FoD minis, to be honest!), but I recently painted my first Red Box figure. I was looking for a character figure for my Cimmerian witch PC in a GURPS Conan campaign, and this miniature fits the bill perfectly. I have to say that I was surprised (and impressed) by the delicacy of the sculpt. Any comments are, of course, welcomed.

Questions and Answers / Directional lighting basics
« on: July 01, 2012, 01:20:55 PM »

I've been on a nostalgia trip for Tunnels and Trolls of late (my first rpg, back in the 70s). I'm going to have a crack at painting one of these which is a figure my girlfriend gave me to represent an old, old T&T character. I've never done anything like directional lighting before, so I wondered if anyone had any pointers? I want to paint the spell effect as a T&T "Take That You Fiend", so a white hot core fading to yellow/orange at the external edges. If it matters, clothing will be dark green and the hair will be black. As always, any help appreciated.

Questions and Answers / Black hair highlighting?
« on: June 04, 2012, 04:45:53 PM »

I've never managed to get black hair looking 'right'. Of late, I've been highlighting by adding Bleached Bone to black, although a stunning painter I was speaking to a while back suggested Graveyard Earth. What do FoDders use?

Questions and Answers / Resin scenic bases - suggestions?
« on: May 24, 2012, 08:37:07 PM »

I'm looking for a couple of resin bases for some character figures and I wondered if anyone had any suggestions.

For a Call of Cthulhu figure I'd like to find a base with a few steps or stairs, as if the character was descending cellar stairs.

And for a GURPS Conan character I just want a bleak, craggy landscape. If there's something else of interest such as a riverbank or tree stump, then so much the better.

As always, any help appreciated. Best,

PS I should say I'm looking for 25mm circular 'straight sided' bases.

General Ranting / London marathon
« on: March 05, 2012, 07:24:04 PM »
Dear all,

Firstly, I'm sorry if this isn't the place to post this (and if that's the case, then I'd ask the mods to delete the thread). Assuming that it's OK to post this...

One of my colleagues, Jake, is a former soldier. He's going to be running the London marathon this year in aid of the Royal British Legion. As if that wasn't tough enough, he's going to do it while pushing a former comrade of his, in a wheelchair. Aron lost a leg while serving in Afghanistan and between them they're hoping to raise 2000 for the British Legion. While Jake doesn't have a direct 'Just Giving' page or similar, donations can be made here:

If anyone wants to donate, then if they'd care to PM me with the amount of donation then I'll keep Jake informed of how much he's raised. Or if you don't mind going public, you could post here and I'll send a link to the thread to Jake.

General Ranting / Salute question
« on: February 25, 2012, 11:28:23 PM »

I'm just back from a ridiculously long, tiring day at the Excel centre for a comic convention. I had been considering attempting to finally make it to Salute this year, but my experiences today have really  put me off the public transport  options. Now, I'm not one for (voluntarily) driving in London, especially without a viable navigator with local knowledge,  but how easy is it to drive in from (say) the M25?

Questions and Answers / Post-war cars, anyone?
« on: February 06, 2012, 09:56:18 PM »

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Crooked Dice's &TV rules (the system is highly playable and the setting appeals to my love of The Avengers, The Prisoner, The Champions et al). I'd love to find some cars suitable for the period. Ideally I'd really like to find a couple of limousines suitable for games set in the mid-Sixties or so (so even 1950s ones would be fine). I appreciate the best bet is suitable diecasts, but that's an area I know precious little about. I don't want to break the bank on this (I've seen glorious Daimlers on eBay that would be ideal, but the seller wanted something like 40!) but I'm up for paying sensible prices. As I'll be repainting I have no problems with doing up 'scrap'. Any pointers would be appreciated.

General Ranting / Recon 2011
« on: November 16, 2011, 11:29:38 PM »
Does anyone know if this West Yorkshire show is actually happening? If so, are there any details anywhere; the website is giving a 404.

Questions and Answers / Anyone know of a UK stockist for Ziterdes?
« on: November 10, 2011, 09:19:59 PM »
I'm looking to buy their 'Dark Revenge' wrecked pirate ship prow:

Would anyone know where I could get one in the UK? I know a couple of sources outside Britain, but I'd prefer to shop locally if I could.
