Wasteland Raiders
« on: November 30, 2008, 01:06:51 PM »
I have been playing Fallout 3 for quite some time now and I think it would rock if Andy would make Raider-like types: Wasteland survivors with mohawks, freaky masks, spikey outfits and all kinds of weapons. I couldn't find any pictures but there are several movies that show the Raiders quite well:
http://www.xfire.com/video/3c856/
http://www.wegame.com/watch/Fallout_3_Two_Raiders/
http://video.gamez.nl/video/1579/gameztv--fallout-3.html (don't mind the Dutch or the weird dude ;))

There aren't a lot of companies that do Raiders (EM4/Grenadier and Mad Puppet to a certain degree) but I think with some multi-posability (loose heads and weapons for instance) I think these will be killers! So not Reavers, but "human" 80's punks. Especially Andy-style

Yeah, Supermutants would also rock! But even more freaky and really in line with Heresy's feel: the Centaur!

Maybe a certain road warrior could be sculpted along with these?

I would deffinitely pick up a pack or two of Fallout3 inspired raiders.  There is so much variety to the armour that they would be really interesting to paint as well.

A couple of supermutants would go down a treat as well....... and lets not forget the brotherhood or the outcasts.

So is the zombie gaming fad being replaced by a post-apoc mutant gaming fad?

I just watched some of the in-game footage and thought it was rather gory.  Is that what entertains people now; blowing heads off things and watching arterial blood pump out everywhere (in a digitised sense, obviously)?

What is the fascination with zombies and mutants as well?

I'm just curious (I have never understood the whole un-dead thing).

Fallout 3 is indeed quite gory; limbs often are blown or hacked off or sometimes even explode in gory bits. I like it, but that's just me. It's mainly because this is one of the first games that is more gritty than most others and it is in line with the first Fallout games (although they had an isometric view and characters were quite small, it was very gory too). The first few times I blew off limbs or heads just exploded I laughed out loud but it happens so often you'll quickly get used to it. Sometimes when my character decapitates someone in slowmotion with a Deathclaw (a gauntlet I made from a monster's claw) I can still enjoy the look, but that also depends on the camera and the type of opponent.
So gore is not a thing I want in a game, but I do find it refreshing once in a while to have something other games don't have. Now I don't want Mortal Kombat or Carmageddon sillyness, but I think the way Fallout 3 is done is cool.

Zombies are just cool because of the movies and the idea behind it; hordes of zombies shuffling towards you and there basically is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. All society degrades into anarchy and small "islands" of humans remain and these slowly crumble into zombies too. The whole inevitability and hopelessness of the situation is very interesting and gives great movies. And I just like replaying cool movies and pc games on my gaming table :)

I've been hoping for someone to sell some mutants and other Fallout inspired stuff ever since I played Fallout 1 way back...
(And some day I'll try to sculpt something looking a bit like an Iguana on a stick.)

Slightly off topic:
Malebolgia, is Fallout 3 good then - I don't just mean visually pleasing but has it the same gritty charm and seems like a good addition to the series or is it less fun (no talking cows and similar silly little things)? Can't play it on my pc, but it would be nice knowing it's worth buying once I can afford a new pc (whenever that will be).

I think raiders would look very nice. Also a couple of the robots look nice. The floaty ones and brain bots.

I'm really enjoying Fallout 3.  I wouldn't say that gore and guts are what attracted me to the game.  In fact, Andy bought it and I only decided to play through the intro because I was at a loss for anything better to do at the time.  45 hours of game play later and I'm not sure I've hit the mid point.  It is a little buggy, but graphically it is very gritty and the game play isn't too challenging for someone who is pretty rubbish at shooty games.

I've been trying to work out how many raiders I would buy..... so far I've come up with 'enough to fill a good sized gang or raiding force.' I recon 8-12 if there was enough variety.

Converting some to be underworld ghouls could be fun too.

Yeah, it is fantastic! I think I have been playing it for about 60 hours now and I still haven't finished it. So it is HUGE, bigger than both Fallout 1 or 2. It has so many locations to discover. It takes loads of time. I have been playing so long because I want to discover all locations before ending it.
It has many cool (and wacky) characters and locations. For instance, yesterday I visited "The Republic of Dave" where ...Dave rules a small community with his weird rules and laws. And yesterday I also met two hilarious "super heros" that battled each other: AntAgonizer (pun intended) and The Mechanizer. Basically they are two loons who battle each other, one in the name of nature and one in the name of the machines. Both look rediculous and say the supidest things but it really has that Fallout feeling.

The whole feel and looks of the world just matches with the first two games so well. You often find small villages of ruined houses, like in the first games. It also has many underground missions and of course zillions of crates, boxes and trunks to search (I have spent God knows how many hours searching them...thankfully FO3 shows if a crate is empty). In addition it has a lot of small touches that are so nice. For instance, somewhere in the beginning I found a house where two skeletons lay embraced in each other's arms with a pistol laying next to the bed. Just wow. It does nothing for the game (except giving you another gun ;)) but it adds a lot.

The next point in my short comparison is the new way of combat. Combat is both continuous 1st person/3rd person action and timed action. You can opt to fire away in real-time which is handy for long range sniping and fullauto action against some buggers but you can also activate the V.A.T.S. system to make an aimed shot (which basically is the same as in the previous Fallouts). The VATS is handy for its high chance of criticals, doing headshots and it looks totally awesome. The disadvantage is that you won't do a lot of shots and it is slow, so you'll get hurt a lot. I think the new way of doing combat is a big step forwards. Of course the turn-base action in the previous games had it charms, it was soooooooo slow. Especially if you were having mass combats in towns (like in Fallout 1 in the village where you can turbo-boost your plasma rifle and it then gets hit by the enemy. That takes ages to complete!). The new way of doing combat makes sure you can go through combats quite quickly and move on. It feels better and more slick to me.
There are a LOT of weapons in this game and many are known favorites for hardcore Fallout gamers (weeeeee! The Alien Blaster returns!). The fact that you can repair the weapons, find ones in better conmdition, find named versions (which are insanely good) all add to the whole collector mania. Once you'll get your own house it is nice to hoard stuff, like I did in the original one with my buddy Ian (in fallout 1 your buddies had no weight limit so he became my cargo space :D).

The final thing to mention are the side-quests and the RPG part. Like before there are soooo many side quests to do, both good and evil. And like in the previous games it is perfectly possible to be a real SoaB. I have seen many options of doing some missions in the most evil way possible, which I will really do the next time I play the game. For instance, in the first town in the game, Megaton you have the option of disarming the nuclear bomb which lies at the center of town OR to explode it. Exploding it will really kill your Karma and also scraps a lot of quests and weapon options you can have in the game. But hell yeah...I will surely do that the next time :D.
In addition, the Perks are great and characterful without being gamebreaking. Leveling up is a lot of fun and keeps you wanting to continue the game.

Conclusion: best game I have played in a loooong time (together with Crysis). I was looking more forward to Far Cry 2, but technical issues and a rather repetitive gameplay shoved that one aside. Fallout 3 plays like a charm, feels logical and easy to master with no hard controls, has that old 50's and typical Fallout look with that grittyness, has many hours of gameplay with loads of quests and characters. Pure awesomeness.

I would like some Fremen inspired Wasteland Raider minis.

More uniform with breather masks and robes.

Maybe even ones that could dubble as ash nomads from necromunda.

Thats my 2 Cents

So is the zombie gaming fad being replaced by a post-apoc mutant gaming fad?

Rather than replaced try combining! Fallout 2 featured zombies and ghouls - infact a city of them!

Malebolgia, thank you for your reply. I really appreciate that you've taken the time to write a review (love the fact that the Alien blaster's in as well as that there's still all those side quests that actually influence karma and make it worth to try out different approaches) . I was a bit afraid it might not be as good as it predecessors, but your review convinced me to buy Fallout3 once I've managed to save up enough money for a new pc.

I loved the games. If they do a "traveller" style character he has to have a pet dog too . . . . . I loved Dogmeat - did you ever try to kill him? Mel Gibson turns up outa no-where and starts blazing away at you!

Throw into that the shotgun wedding! I have one and two and they are quality. I have to admit that the 1st person combat system is what is going to make me bite the bullet and buy it - but not until after christmas! I have money but it is going on some much needed post-apocalyptic miniatures in the shape of the trenchcoats.

Ok I am going to wack this in here as it is sort of a fallout reference anyway! I think that with a simple head swap option one model could make either:

or

Obviously they would not actually be the above  :paranoid2:
