RIP to my Xbox 360 Elite Console
« on: October 31, 2008, 05:51:41 PM »
I was happy killing yanks on the game Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare and then the game froze up on me so I look down and see 4 red flashing lights  :tantrum: I had a  25 kill streak going as well.

The thing that is really pissing me of is the the Console is just 6 weeks out of its shop cover :x.

This is a shop that I go to often and chat to them on a first name bases I have bought a lot of games , dvds , 2 DS Consoles , and 2 Xbox 360 Consoles one being my Elite Console bought on the day that Halo 3 was released which was the 14 of September 2007.

There not even paperrad to aknoledge all the money I have spent in there shop  :grrr: and the manger was not polite when he said tough look you have to send it back to MS.

I don't know if I want to risk sending it to get fixed up after hearing all the bad things people say about MS taking so long to fix there Console.

so for now I say

RIP to my Elite 360 long may I remember all the good times we had no scopeing yanks and shotguning down all those sob trying to hide good times.

The same thing happened to mine dude, it's a real bitch when it does. The problem im told is that continued and excessive use causes overheating inside the console, (and the heat sinks inside are crap if non-existant,although MS won't admit to this) and this causes the solder in the motherboard to perish, hence fried console. Only thing you can do dude is send it off to MS, unless it's insured by optional insurance  or household contents insurance. By the way, it isnt placed on top of another appliance is it,(dvd, video, sky box) as the heat from other appliances interferes with it also

My uncle has sent his in twice. It really didn't seem to long to him when he sent it in. Buy some minis to paint while it is away and you might not even notice.

You can actually fix that problem yourself. But if you crack the case open then neither MS or an authorized dealer will touch it after that. I took my son's apart about six months ago and it hasn't given us a problem since then. He plays his 360 upwards of 8 hours at a time on a regular basis as well.

Was it definitely 4 lights and not 3, cos if it's 3 light's then Microsoft will fix it for free.

Those people that own an Xbox 360 should bare in mind one thing...

... It WILL RRoD at some point.

There isn't enough cooling/venting/space around the graphics chip and they melt their own solder over and over, the chip working loose until - pop - RRoD.

It's a design flaw that Microsoft denied existed until earlier this year when they decided to up everyones warranty to 3 years. ( But only for the RRoD. )

I don't know if it has any bearing on this issue, but there have been a lot of electronic items with problems since they mandated the use of lead-free solder to meet RoHS requirements.

no never when I was useing it I had it in front of my front door under the post box so that it get the cold air and its on top of a flat table and it was the leads length away from my pc and screen.

Buy some minis to paint while it is away and you might not even notice.

I have stopped buying minis now ( until there is at least more than just the one mini that I like in that range.)

That's why I'm so against buckling to get a 360.

yes at first it was 4 flashing lights then it was 3 flashing lights but now its 4 still red lights.

I am going to tell MS that it is 3 lights and send it to them and hope for the best.

I hope I get it back in time for when the game Call of Duty World at War comes out.

It's weird that you can't take it back to the shop, because my nephew's 360 Elite went down and it was replaced by Woolworths (where they got it from). At first the assistant there said that they couldn't after 28 days, but Woolworths helpline was phoned and then they had no choice but to replace it

This 28 days rule only applies to items that are unwanted. So if this shop of yours is a chainstore, like GAME, then they should replace it. I think, by rights, they should replace it anyway, even if they're an independent one.

So you're being fobbed off, so stand up for your rights

Yep, I was right, you can take it back to the shop and watch them weep when you tell them of your rights:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/consumer/guides_to/goods_index.shtml

"The shop may say you have to claim a refund from the manufacturer, or claim under the manufacturer's guarantee. This isn't true. Shoppers' rights under the Sale of Goods Act are against the retailer, not the manufacturer. Guarantees simply give additional rights which shoppers can choose to use."

ditto what is said under the sales of goods act. if the item is less than 6 months old then you are in such a strong position.

they have to prove that the item was in a fit for purpose state , and they have to provide a replacement, repair or refund (all of which you are entitled to)

go in quoting the sales of goods act 1979 and if no joy then mention trading standards
I don't have a catchphrase yet.............

He said he bought it September 2007, so it's a bit older than 6 months.

Don't forget, if you swap the console for another one, then any downloads will be screwed up.  They get linked to the console they were downloaded to and the Gamertag that downloaded them.  If only one of them tallies up, then they won't work properly. Up untill a few months ago, this was a big problem, but now you can relink any downloads to a new console once a year.

Sending it into Microsoft should ensure you get the same console back.

I am going to tell MS that it is 3 lights and send it to them and hope for the best.

A friend at work had a problem that only gave him 2 red lights, he tried to cook it on purpose to get it to do 3, it wasn't having any of it but he told Microsoft it was 3 anyway.  They repaired it without any issues, so they musn't have bothered cheching it before fixing.

Ah, it's a shame that. I must've read it as only 6 weeks old. Looks like you're going to have to go through the Microsoft route then  :(
