Bodhis WIP never mind
« on: July 28, 2008, 11:03:18 AM »
I've been having my green stuff with me on my trips during a very hot summer both in Sweden and in Greece and haven't stored it cold for over a month. As I am nearing completion of the first layer of my contest sculpt I notice that my green stuff is ruined! Tiny yellow spots of cured yellow here and there. Luckily I've got a fresher batch tucked away but... Hopefully it will work even if I have the dread yellow spots in the inner armature... Pics coming up in a few hours. My daughter is eager to use the computer and she's been away for ten days with no computer access so I'll hand it over now.

the last few days have been so warm here that the small amounts of green stuff i'm making up are unusable after about half an hour because it's too warm they just won't stick  :( i hate hot days, can't paint either the paint dries on the brush too quickly  :blub:

Grek thin the paint down with a lot of water and just paint more layers. Will give you a smoother finish in the end anyway.

What is with them yellow spots? I get them on mine on occasion whether its a fresh strip or not. It's very annoying when your doing a face only to notice it has a giant yellow wart on its nose  :hmmm

It's uncured yellow and will become a ghastly pockmark when you spincast the figure. So think of every yellow spot as a hole in your finished sculpt. That's quite horrible really.
I'm just hoping that a TINY amount in the INNER structure of the figure won't matter that much. If you have it on the final layer you're done for casting wise.

Anyway... You can make out the general shape and idea I hope. Right arm will be raised for clawing. Left wing will be half folded.
Standing up straight he would be human sized I guess but he's hunched up. Have included a Hasslefree figure for size comparison.
It's supposed to be an imp/minor demon:

Basetag, right leg and left arm would cast as one piece. Body, left leg and right wing (possibly including right arm depending on how I position it) would make one part and left wing would make one part.

Nice! Also I've just started getting yellow spots on my dragon bust. I've got a tonne of that GS left too. I'm tempted to chill it hard and trim the centre bit where they meet away, see if that helps. My bad I should really put it away somewhere cool but my parents seem to object to putty in the fridge and nowhere else in my house is cool right now.

I completely understand them. I'm a parent and I object to putty in the fridge, despite the fact that I'm the one putting it there

Hide it in the freezer then? Maybe they won't mind frozen putty, wrapped in a freezer bag.

Yes that's my youngest. He's four today. It happened ONCE and my daughter took a picture. Nothing I had a habit of doing. And probably I was just covering an armature with the initial layer or something equally simple. Can't remember. These days he wouldn't sit still for many seconds so it would be impossible. He often sits with little plastic D&D figures poking about at them with my clayshapers though while I sculpt  :D My daughter sculpted a lot before but now she's turned mostly to oilpaintings and abandoned the 3d media more or less. She's quite a skilled painter.

Nice looking sculpt so far. I like the size of it compared to Grant - looks like it will be relatively small, but vicious.

With the yellow bits... are these small yellow granules (think I remember that happening once - not much you can do about that), or large unmixed lumps from the centre? I always cut thin strips of greenstuff, and then immediately discard the little hard middle bit. Possibly this indicates that my green stuff is a bit old, but it does save having to work around the unmixed bit!

Very small granules. And I allways cut the centerpart away. Thinking of trying to get the next batch with the bleu and yellow in separate tubes. I have the death god Ryuk from the manga "Death Note" as inspiration for this guy. Though Ryuk is large, Three heads taller than a human. He also has Punk/Goth style clothing which I have no intention of copying. Have now removed that arm and made the stoop more pronounced (the arm got a bit TO long).

Incidently I'm trying to quit smoking so recently I keep tools and a sculpture or two and some putty in one of those tourist belly pouches so I can allways pick up and sculpt a bit where ever I am when the urge for a cigarette gets to strong. Works a treat and enables me to sculpt while out in the fine summer weather with the kids  :D I allways mix to much putty at once though so it's an awful waste that way.

The tubes are great Bodhi. Maybe put less putty in the pouch so you don't waste it.

Of for a week. That wing proves to difficult to conveniently pack on the trip so I won't be bringing this sculpt with me. We'll see if I make it for the deadline...

doesn't really make sense seeing as you wear them on the front though.
except if you consider what we call a fanny in australia, then it makes sense

Back and have spent the better part of the day working on the wings. Left wing is halffolded. Quite a tricky thing to solve I felt...
Well - I'm lying. I spent MOST of the day working on a female anatomy study that ended up in the dustbin... It's the butt and hip that gets me every time... That smoothness of motion just eludes me.

ehrrm... you can also see that I've increased the stoop. the right arm follows the wing in a striking pose (You can hopefully see that I've started on it)so I'll make no armature for it
