Having worked in a grocery store for a few years, I had decided that there were really only two holidays at the time.  I named them, Hallowistmas and Eastertines Day.  Now they're blending together...Hal-istmas-ster-lentines!  A Hallmark holiday, brought to you by Cadbury.

too much time time on Facebook...i was looking for the 'like' button!
A bank is a place where they lend you an umbrella in fair weather & ask for it back when it starts to rain.

most mornings i wake up grumpy.   sometimes i just let him sleep.

my life consists of brief snatched moments of living my life hidden deep among chaos, confusion& the  going crazy, every night i go to sleep filled with hope & enthusiasm for the new day coming.  then i wake up & think "here I go again" & just aim to survive.

Something that leaves me feeling a little sad. One of me neighbours (she's into her 90s) told me she'll be moving to a home for the elderly, sometime after christmas she'd be testing the place so to say.
As she had a stroke and a heartatack a few years ago, for the past two years (ever after that cursed redevelopment bullshit) I used to go over and collect her garbage to dispose of it since the doors would have been far too heavy for her to deal with. Yesterday another neighbour told me, she won't be coming back and her family allready started to remove the furniture- would have been nice if somebody had told me, would've been nice if somebody'd told her!  Not just because I would have been able to plan my time differently, but mainly because it would've been nice to say goodby and have her new address so that I could visit her every once in a while and write to her.

I worked at a grocery store about... oh, 20 years ago, and they had Jack-O-Lanterns and Santos up at the same time (pre-Halloween) at one point.  Next to each other/intermingled, even.

This is strange to me... here we have a solid difference between them. A mix of them at every part of the year means less objects sold.

made an expensive error then?  Wait until you go for 'Free Range Organic Fed' ... you would need a 2nd mortgage!

You should never meet your heroes, or read their books.  Got the River Cottage Meat Book yesterday, and I'm finally starting to go off Hugh's condescending preaching.  (And preaching and preaching and preaching... get to the recipes already!)

It's starting to nark me but it's starting to get through too.  I'm not going to gasp and spout 'did you know?' horror stories like a high school kiddy who's just found out the world sucks; but I liked to imagine I knew what I was buying, and now I don't.  I'm beginning to feel a bit uncomfortable about all the hand-waving and misdirection about welfare standards*, and kicking myself for falling for it.  I'm prepared to shell out extra for decently-raised meat, but...

What's it like?  I feel like I'm a few steps away from putting on a hair shirt and going off to be a hermit.  I thought I could stand to buy a 40 goose once a year, but could I stand that kind of thing all year?
Sally, you're the only person I know who I've seen talking about regularly buying meat that's at the least free range.  What's the convenience like?  What are the limitations?  Is it something easily settled into or do you get a hankering for turkey twizzlers...?

*Or facepalm honesty, like a local poultry producer happily burbling how it's 'committed to the highest welfare standards', which includes putting windows in it's closed sheds so the chickens can look out...

My wife is a farmer, and she openly laughs at the 'free range' and 'organic' labels on food; as far as she's concerned it's all completely unnatural and artificial regardless. 'Free range' chickens live in sheds... with access to an outside yard that they almost never use because they're so territorial. 'Organic' to her means the use of semi-treated sewage as fertiliser; she has (many) stories of muckspreading on fields and looking back to see condoms, sanitary towels and so on sticking out of the muck.

The only thing she's adamant about is buying British raised (not slaughtered - often the animals are from elsewhere) meat, because regulations abroad are much laxer and more chemicals are used which get into the meat and are then eaten.

Which saves us a few bob I can tell you!

I worked as a chemist designing cleaning products for the food, beverage and farming industries for may years. The whole 'organic' tag is laughable. The very meaning of the word has been subverted. It's also possible to use 'chemicals' (organics are chemicals too, by the way) on a crop and then stop the use for a period before harvest and still market your product as 'organic'. I now refuse to buy organic produce on principle.

Bear in mind my current interest in organic food is the basic meat welfare standards (which I'm fairly sure doesn't include feeding animals human sewage and condoms), rather than a lack of all additives.  I haven't gone as far as to brood over the life and mind of a carrot sprayed with a few organophosphates.
I'm aware of the different levels of 'free range' too, and I'm not entirely sure the territoriality of chickens is a great reason to cram the bog-standard product in like sardines, either.

Don't worry, your average crop field's fertiliser tends not to show up in the diets of livestock!

The point she makes with regards to chickens is that, sure, give them more space, but be honest: "it's a bigger shed" not "OMG WTF PAY MORE COZ WE GIVE THEM SUM GRASS" which is what most eggs and chickens are marketed as.

If you want ACTUAL organic, free-range stuff...

...buy yourself a smallholding, or a big garden, or rent an allotment, and grow and raise your own. No other way to do it, frankly.

I've seen some organic farmshop sites where there's even assurance about the bird's organically-fed ancestry.  That seems a bit too 'above and beyond'.
Even just 'more space' seems better, although I've thought about keeping chickens long before now, too.  Maybe time to get started.

Exactly, it's not hard to keep a few chooks. They're pretty forgiving birds (but like to confuse fingers for worms 'by accident on purpose'). You can sell the excess eggs too.

My "broad"band.

I'm paying the equivalent of 40 per month, for what is supposed to be "maximum speed".
Said speed is, and has been all day, 150 Kbits.

Time to change dsl supplier, me thinks.

First, some background. I've suffered from rheumatoid arthritis since the mid-1980s. If you were to meet me on a good day you wouldn't know. On a bad day I have difficulty standing and have even have to have a friend button a shirt for me. I try to ignore it as best I can; still hold down a (good) full-time job for instance. Sometimes, when people meet me, they ask why I'm limping or stooped. That's fine, but when you're given the answer, please don't say:

a. Oh, my aunt/gran/mother* gets that. Or
b. I bet it's worse in this cold/rainy/foggy weather.

To answer a. they probably don't have RA if, as you say, they get twinges once in a while and b. nope, it's bad whatever the weather!

I've heard these answers more times than you can believe and I find it incredibly frustrating that this is all people can find to say.

Rant over!
