But the paving looks somehow odd to me... as if it were absolutely flat. Is this a print?

No.  It's embossed plasticard.  Model railway people use it.

No.  It's embossed plasticard.  Model railway people use it.

We do indeed.  It does looks slightly more flat when in a recessed base like this, but I think it looks great on this figure!
