Goblin war snail
« on: December 22, 2015, 11:16:19 PM »
Back after a long absence... Computer went on the fritz, blue screen of death, no internet access, recovery partition on HDD don't fix problem, recovery disk only has windows XP, seriously considering switching to Ubuntu, early xmas present of new computer, Install new software, getting to grips with GIMP, had to find out what acronym actually stood for before I dared to google for it, finally back! What have I been doing?

Early work in progress shots of goblin war snail. How better to survive the battle than to make sure you always turn up late? Texture on the snails back is taking forever, and actually feeling slightly ill doing the crinkly bits along the sudopod...
Feels good to be emerging from long creative malaise at last, hope to get some more WiP pics up soon.

Still have not painted that fish in a spacesuit yet. :tumbleweed:

More progress... each of those wrinkles on the snails back has to be done one at a time... take a 1mm blob of beesputty, put it on the snail, squash, repeat... I did try making a tool to add the texture, but it just did not look as good, so the hard way it is.

eyestalks are taking shape, will have to start on the shell soon. I am wondering if I should do the shell as a seperate piece, that way it can be used as both a giant snail and a giant slug...

Also added a guard to the cork, so I did not keep on squashing the snail's tail every time I turned the cork.

It looks aces. All the details are right. the wiggle of the dress, the curve of the stalks and especially the texture of the skin. great job :)

All you guys that sculpt really amaze me!  There is so much talent lurking around the FoD.  I tried to make shoes on a two models that I found broken in a bits box and they looked like rocks.

Great job on the snail!

Thanks for all the comments. Just about done with the skin texture, going to pop him in the halogen oven before a careless finger squashes all that work...

I have a number of different ideas for the shell... plain vanilla shell, representing the snail in its wild, untamed state, grazing among the fungi in some dank cave, an armoured shell with fearless goblin snail rider, wielding his deadly snail goad, and mabye a civilian version, a travelling goblin mechant on his pack-snail, or a goblin fungus farmer, driving his snail cart to market...

...the risk here is getting distracted by too many ideas. I'd better just stick to one for now.
