Prints and sculpts
« on: June 08, 2015, 06:24:44 AM »
As a first go at sculpting monsters 3d I had a go at doing a basilisk.
Here's the printed version from a 3d printer I recently received.

the sculpt (needed some more definition)

Nice work.

I'm interested to see what it looks like with the gaps filled and some paint on it... the details aren't too visible at the moment.

It's pretty cool. Had to wait for ages for the kickstarter to fulfill though. If you're interested in one and not worried about the wait check out this. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tiko3d/tiko-the-unibody-3d-printer/description
Looks pretty good and is cheap too. I almost decided to buy this one after thinking my current one was never going to arrive. Only problem is it's on kickstarter so is a risk and you'll have to wait a while.

Printed big vanilla spider. Don't have a mini in the pic for scale but it's big, believe me.

Just a little bit more greenstuff in the joins and then on to painting.

I ran out of plastic after doing this guy's legs so am now moving onto the grey plastic I have. Hopefully it should show the detail a lot better.

All of this was done on sketchup (except for the bag of apples, that's GS, and the barrel with fish coming out, that was added to on Zbrush however the printer couldn't get the detail I wanted.
I also sculpted a giant snail to draw the thing along too. I'm waiting for a warmer night before printing it though as when temperatures get too low the printer siezes up and doesn't lower which could possibly do some serious damage as the forward/backward and sideways still work and it still extrudes, I don't know if it has an inbuilt sensor to stop that sort of thing happening but I don't want to find out.

Not a huge amount of free ones out there. Sketchup is good for blocky things like this and I find it's fairly quick and easy to use. I'm slowly getting the hang of zbrush which is great for organic designing. Sketchup has had many upgrades over the years so I think it is much more intuitive now.
