So... the routine has kicked in and I am pretty busy with all the good things that my job entails (H & S, Quality, documentation, manpower management etc...). I still have my additional platoon to deal with but that is just more manpower management so that isn't too bad. I am also bar manager for our section bar and last night we had a band on. I was working behind the bar and had a dry night so I could fully appreciate the atmosphere of the place whilst running around the bar area, serving drinks. There was no trouble and everyone was very polite so that really made things worth while.

I'm off to Mt Tumbledown tomorrow for a battlefield tour... hopefully the weather will be better than today because there is a howling gale, rain and the occasional hail flurry; not to mention that the wind chill is ferocious (ice-cream headache in 5 minutes!).

With everything that is going on, I am amazed that I am able to find the time for fitness... I've become a proper sport Billy. I am going for the Falklands challenge which is effectively 574 Km on land and 62 Km on water. If you complete the challenge, you get a T-shirt. Fortunately the land based stuff can be running, cross-training and cycling (in the gym on the machines counts) and the water based stuff can be swimming or rowing (again, the rowing machine in the gym is allowed). I am exercising most days and am doing OK on the mileage. I also agreed to run a half marathon distance while I am here so all of the training will help towards that too. There is also the added bonus of losing my saddlebags... something that I have been wanting to do for a while :).

There will be photographic evidence of some stuff soon...

So... busy, busy. The time is flying by. I have done 3 weeks tomorrow. Another week and a half and I am a quarter of the way there :D!

I'm getting towards the halfway point now and this Saturday/Sunday just gone, took a trip over to San Carlos to strip out a farm building with some of the lads. We had a blast, made a cramped, cluttered building into a spacious barn full of potential and spent a great weekend, in glorious sunshine by the side of the water. I put up a blog post about it on Inso's World.

The only trouble was... we had to leave at some point and return to the camp :( .

Over half way now :D!

This Friday I am off-call and the bar has karaoke on so I will be taking advantage of the facility and pulling out the pin a bit :)

I've no idea what I will be doing for the free-time at the weekend but it will be my time so it is likely that I will get some more sculpting in.

Today, I am a little bit anxious because my son is sitting his aptitude test to join up today and I am waiting to hear how he has done...

An update - My lad was successful with his aptitude test but he didn't score high enough for his first choice. He originally went in for Aircraft Technician but has been offered Supplier (which he has accepted) so it is a bit of a change but he is keen to get in the RAF and, to be honest, would have accepted pretty much anything to do it.

He now has the interview/medical/fitness bits left to do but that all starts next week.

I am very happy for him :)

So he gets in as you get out.
Is there a chance for him to shift into the technician role late if possible?

Re-mustering is possible but it can be difficult.

To be honest, he could do a lot worse than supplier as there are loads of opportunities for courses and qualifications that are good for jobs in the civvy market when he leaves... and the job is as simple or as difficult as you want to make it and really depends on how pro-active you are. You can do well really quickly if you put the effort in... if not, then you stack blankets.

It is.

You live feral for a few months and adjust to being domesticated again when you get home.

You also have to step back a bit when you get home so that you see how things have been before you assume your old position in the family.

It normally takes a couple of weeks.

'In a couple of weeks' is all I am able to say. I can't be specific.

So... to continue with the 'it's a funny old life' theme, I've been back from the Falklands for 6 days and I've just been called into the boss's office for a chat.

Apparently, a promotion board has just sat and I am on the list for promotion! Flight Sergeant Marchant sounds a bit weird to me...

... now the thing is... I was planning to leave the RAF and become a hippy so this little inject has really put the cat amongst the pigeons.

As the Clash would say... "Should I stay or should I go?"

I don't know what job/area is on offer yet so it is very early to be making any sort of decision... but it is rather pleasant to be told that I am promoted :)
