UNDoD14 - The Rules.
« on: June 14, 2014, 08:39:43 PM »
This year, I am going to be completely carefree with the rules for the UNDoD so batten down the hatches, listen up and take note :D.

Seeing as there hasn't been too much of an uptake in previous UNDoDs, there will only be one category:

Themed Diorama

There is a choice of two themes this year...

'It'll never fly' and 'They mostly come at night... mostly'.

The only miniatures that can be used for the diorama are those from the FoD companies:

  • Heresy (including those ranges available from Heresy miniatures ie. Spyglass)
  • Hasslefree (including those ranges available from Hasslefre ie. Studio)
  • Fenris (including those ranges available from Fenris ie. Cthulhu Wars
  • Black Scorpion (if you must... even though they are not, strictly speaking, a FoD company any more)

A start picture showing unpainted/primed only components/miniatures must be shown after the start date (with proof of date in frame) in order to participate in the UNDoD. These pictures must be placed in the 'WIPs of Doom' section and will provide the first post for your WIP thread :)

Those are the rules...

You have to post a start picture after the start date, represent one (or both, if you want to) of the themes in the diorama and any miniatures you use must be from a FoD company.

The competition will start on Sept 24th at 00:01hrs and will end on Dec 24th at Midnight GMT. Once the competition is over, a poll will be posted and the winners will be chosen by votes.

The winners may or may not get a prize... but what they will get is bragging rights. They will also have a nice little diorama that they created to admire :D

So...

The competition is pretty open.
You can make it as big/small/simple/complicated as you like... with no base size restrictions.
You can use any manufacturer's scenery/vehicles/products as long as you don't use non-FoD miniatures.

How does that sound?

Now all we need to do is to start collecting bits together to get started on the 24th Sep :D

Dec 24th at Midnight GMT.

So that's 12 hours more than last year then.

I'll write this on my calendar this year. No doing all the work and thinking I have time to photograph the result and miss the noon deadline! :-/

Bigger doesn't always mean better... it is how you portray the theme that is important :)

The extra 12 hours was just for you, Brandlin :D (that and I thought I'd make it easier and have full days). It also means that I'll have something to do on Christmas day while I wait for the dinner to cook (sort out the poll, rather than doing it the day before).

I appreciated your tolerance of my inability to read basic rules :-/

I agree about bigger is not necessarily better. In fact the diorama for last year was sized so that it fitted in my display cabinet. I can't go bigger in the base... But maybe I can go taller? Hmmmmmm...

One of the mistakes I think a lot of people make with diorama building is size. My teenage gang diorama has ten figures and a vehicle on a 100mm diameter base. Often there's just too much dead area on bases and it throws the composition out.

I'm thinking this year that the grav bike might have to make an entrance... Seeing as I've bitched about it for half a decade and I was given one last year. Hence I'm voting for "It'll never fly..." ;-)

I have updated the rules in the first post with the themes... so now is the time to start collecting stuff together, ready for the starting pix on 24th September. Remember to read the rules and make sure that starting pic 'stuff' is either unpainted or just primed.

Well...

What are you waiting for?

Get your thinking caps on and go and start collecting stuff :).

Well seen as though people seem to be liking my 'Mullet delves deep' diorama, I figured I would find out what the UNDoD is all about!

I will have to do a bit of planning to see what I can come up with. Then I will need to do some shopping!

Well the ball is rolling. I've been thinking and planning my idea since my first reply here and now I will be entering this little competition!

I do have a question though. My diorama is going to be pretty large, 18" high by 12" in diameter is my estimate!! Without giving too much away, I need to build a base kind of like a cake stand; can I build this before we get started?  :eh: This won't be the final look of the diorama, as a lot of modelling will be going on top of it.

As long as the stand doesn't contribute to the theme of the diorama, I think it is OK.

For example, if you were to buy a cake stand, it would look like a cake stand so if you make a base that will look similar to a cake stand, I would expect it to be structural but have no details that would lend anything to the diorama.

So... you couldn't make the stand to look like a castle or a building or anything like that... it would have to look like a stand.

Ahh okay. Yeah the base will basically look like a cake stand, but it will be getting covered so it won't be seen in the end
