I think that you would be better served going to a sculpting class where you sit with a sculptor and work through your issues personally. A tutorial can only take you so far and from what you said about 'enjoying college where you had a collection of artistic people sharing ideas' suggests that having a sculptor there to address where you think you are going wrong would be better.

Anyway, back to the army and here's the third finished member of the army command squad; a sniper:

And FINALLY (WHEW!) the army command squad is finished... first the Medic and Comms:

Followed by the full squad:

I guess I should really start painting some now... but my sculpting mojo has kicked in again and I quite fancy finishing off this Psyker now:

I thought I'd write a tiny bit of fiction to go with my army. It just explains why certain aspects of the army are like they are... anyway... here it is:

http://insosworld.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/the-invasion-some-background-to-my.html

It also gives a little bit of a precursor to what my veteran Tyranid hunters will look like :) .

And to finish off for the moment... A blog post to go with a massive army pic and a bit of information about what stage the army is at: http://insosworld.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/the-squat-army-so-far.html

So... how about a short story? This is the tale of one of the Squats who survived the Tyranids...

I am sculpting a little bit (the beastman is getting there nicely) but unfortunately, I am struggling with tiredness and find concentration difficult... so I am typing a bit of background which I hope will stimulate a bit more enthusiasm :) :

Well, I guess it's back to boring old pictures of converted miniatures again :D ... here's a complete (apart from the light-sabre tips) Primaris Psyker... or Jedi Beastman... whichever works best for you :) :

There is a bit of blurb on the blog... including some Pug related fun :) :

It's good to get back to normal :D (whatever that is :o ).

Cheers :) . I mix green stuff... other wise it wouldn't set :D

Normally, I use Greenstuff on its own but for larger sculpts I may build the core from standard Milliput. If I want a particularly soft putty that will be harder when set, I'll mix Milliput with Green Stuff or use a Greenstuff/Brownstuff mix.

However, my usual putty is straight Greenstuff.

Ah, mixing the green stuff is where I'm going wrong, I thought these blobs of yellow and blue where meant to harden.

I thought you may have mixed as the photos of the GS look fairly light, must just be the lighting.
Musculature and fists look great.

I get the ribbon type Green Stuff and just just cut across the end to get a thin strip (I don't meticulously measure ratios between blue/yellow). I pinch the joint between yellow and blue out and discard it before mixing the putty. That means that I get a bit of variation in the mix but I just work with whatever turns up :)

The lighting in the photos probably doesn't help... :o

The ribbon I have at the moment has a thinner blue strip than yellow so I get a fairly light coloured mix.

I always forget to take the middle strip out and end up with that already cured bit in my mix, a pain if I don't get it out before sculpting. My son wants me to sculpt a troll for him to go with those extremely cheap em4 orcs he spent some cash on. Good deal for a 7 year old with birthday money to spend.

A Troll eh?

Maybe (if you weren't keen on sculpting a troll) you could try getting a Reaper Bones troll from Miniature Heroes (a UK supplier of Reaper). It would likely be cheaper than the amount of Green Stuff you'd use.

I'd suggest building the core with Milliput over your wire frame. It is much cheaper than Green Stuff and will do the job nicely (it's what I use in this instance... my Mushroom Troll I made is a good example).

Funny thing is I haven't been able to find a good supplier of millliput over here since my regular train shop closed down. I also know of a Australia supplier of Milliput that sells it pretty cheap... I've been keen to sculpt again for a while so will probably give it a go again rather than just buying one. (sorry for the off topic stuff)

No worries :)

You could probably get away with sculpey or some such for the core (it only needs to bulk out the wire to save on Green Stuff. Failing that, you could scrunch cooking foil around the wire and then green stuff on top... or that plaster infused bandage (mod rock?) if you are going quite big (then you could get your lad involved in the process by showing him how to wrap the wire, ready for the sculpting).

If he's keen to get involved then let him. Maybe, while you are working on a troll, he could be building an Earth Elemental out of mod-rock (with a small amount of help when it comes to building the armature and sculpting the hands and face).

Another option it to wrap the wire core with more wire to bulk it out.

I have a few kg's of air drying clay so that might be a good base. He'll love making some stuff out of that too. First we have to paint the cardboard he wants to game on (We've been working our way through Heroquest and he's keen on making his own board.)

Air drying clay would work too... just make sure that the core is properly dry before you put stuff around it or it may do weird things (crack, split, bubbles etc).

If you add PVA glue to the paint, it will stop the paint being absorbed into the card, will adhere nicely and will end up with a nice satin finish :)

Id say if you are going to go with air drying clay then go for the tinfoil over the armature to bulk it out or it might end up heavy as F**k. which could lead to thinner areas not being able to support large areas or it being lop sided and falling over :)super sculpy is actually super easy to use if you have a oven that produces a even heat :) just bake it in thin layers.

Well... now that we have chatted a bit about sculpting, it's time to get back on track with a tiny bit of progress on the last of the Jedi Beastmen:

And there is a bit of news about how the Space Marine part of the army will be filled up, over at Inso's World:

In other news... I bought some of the new Mantic Forge Father 'Steel Warriors' recently and have put a couple together. I was hoping that they would fit into my army without any conversion but you will see from the pic that they are far too tall (from left to right: Squat, Squat/Steel Warrior, Steel Warrior, Space Marine):

I have quickly put together a mock-up of a Steel Warrior body on the legs from a 'sawn in half' plastic Squat (using blu-tack) to see how it looks... and I think that the height will work but I now need to work out how I am going to convert 20 of them without necessarily having to sculpt 20 pairs of legs :o ...

... nothing ever goes smoothly :( .

There are other issues with them but I will sort out a review and post it in my blog once I can bring myself to do it. I am quietly disappointed with them... even though, in their own right, they are nice looking miniatures... just too big for my particular army :(
