Grymn Aircraft?
« on: September 11, 2013, 01:54:06 PM »
Has anyone put together any type of Grymn aircraft?

I know there was the Grymn anti-grav craft / grav-copter... but I am talking about fighter aircraft or light space fighters.

If not, has anyone thought about what they may look like?

I have always wanted to put together a fighter Squadron but have had no luck when thinking about how the aircraft should look (I have a number of failed experiments in the kit-bash department).

Kev showed off a Harrier type aircraft but I thought it was to recognisable as a Harrier... I even bought a Harrier kit to play with but failed to get anywhere with it.

So... has anyone build any or does anyone have any set ideas about how they think they should look?

Cheers .

Got this saved on my favourites:

Ideally would be a cross between an A-10, a hind gunship and a stealth fighter  :D

Really? Because it looks more like a little red cross to me.

I know a guy had planned to use a Robogear Condor as a grymn craft... Didn't it look ok, then?

And what about the Robogear Hornet?

It was one of those things that seemed a good idea at the time but when I had the robogear stuff in my hands it would have needed lots of work to be what I was after... and I wanted something a bit less labour-intensive.

That's the problem. I can't visualise what I want from a Grymn fighter aircraft (that is why so many scratchbuilds/conversions have failed :( ).

No... my mojo died around the time I was thinking about it.

Now I think that they are wrong for what I want.

The whole 'style for Grymn#' thing can be really tricky some times. I think the aircraft will need to be sleek but stumpy with lots of straight edges but plenty of curves too... Hmmm :(

Like a joint strike fighter (lightening 2)?

How about this - it's actually a Narn cruiser from Babylon 5 but I like the style - maybe a scaled down version to fighter size ?

Personally, I'd imagine grymn aircraft to look something like this:

(it's the "seraphim strike fighter" from the Dropship Commander game)

I think one of these would work quite well as a starting point

I knocked one up in a couple of hours from card to use as an objective in a game using a template found online. Nice cheap way to try a few things out

I made one from a Tau Devilfish from GW - I think it fits quite well, fairly heavily converted - to my mind it covers most of your criteria Inso. Afraid I don't have a picture and its not with me atm.

It's absolutely something on 'the list'. For the possibility of having the Grymn be in a gameable world, or at least the one that's currently on the cards, we'd be looking at something that wouldn't completely outclass a near-future real-world fighter. So near future rather than super sci-fi.

(Hence the commens on the other thread about Grymn bikes having wheels rather than being anti-grav designs)

Much as I like the Tau aesthetics (except for the latest super-robots...), I've never been a fan of the Devilfish. Don't know why.

The Piranha, on the other hand... :froth: And I think its general shape looks similar to that of the old grymn grav bike, only a bigger two-people version. Specially with a little modification, as seen here:

And from there, the next logical step is the Sun Shark Bomber, again slightly converted by getting rid of those rods (only good for breaking), and turning the small back wings up.

And from there, if you notice, again there's just one step towards the kind of fighter bomber that I've posted earlier.

The first thing that popped into my mind when imagining Grymn aircraft (apart from the little flyer that was floating about a while back) was the TSR2.

That's what I currently use, accompanied by the small fighters.

Hmmm from that angle the tsr2 looks good, but in reality it's a horrid gangly ungainly thing :(

only just noticed what fog99uk  had posted,
the TSR2 for Grymn,  hmmm   you'd almost need a 1:72 length for it ( its 14" long there) but the 1:48 one would look like a huge air / space superiority fighter ( at 21" long)   maybe for one of the spares ive got after ive done my UK UNIT pair.
a happy dauber

I haven't had a chance to start work on it yet, but I plan to use Bombshell Miniatures' ISW-69 Shuttle http://bombshell-miniatures.highwire.com/product/isw-69f-scout-ship as a Grymn Dropship.
