New Walker Variant WIPs
« on: August 27, 2013, 12:50:32 PM »
Sal created a nice 'note' on FB but I know some of you don't like it over there so I'm doing my best to copy it here, apologies if formatting doesn't work well...
...................................................

There is a lot of talk of 3D sculpting.  It isn't a bad thing and in fact we have just invested in a top of the range tablet and 3D software for Kev to experiment and create with.

However neither of the walker variants are created this way so I thought I would show you some of the stages that detail how it is created.

If you would like i will ask Kev to let me know when he is next making a gun so you can see that process as well.

These quick images show some of the handmade components that Kev uses to make things like walkers and vehicles.
They will be formed using putty, plasticard and various types of rod and tubing.

We then get them individually cast into resin so he has multiple of each variant to work with.  This ensures continuity throughout the range he is working on as the resin casting is a very high quality and allows him to trim and manipulate each section as needed to create what he can see in his head.  The majority of the images shown below focus around the creation of the arms and hands.

This is how a top class sculptor works and why we get so annoyed when we are challenged on our prices. especially when their are companies that charge a lot more for less quality and detailing.   The work Kev puts into a model is meticulous and can take months, time that could be spent making other figures for a quicker profit turnaround.

We also invest a lot of money in getting the pieces resin cast.  Over the years we have re-invested all of our profits back in HF, the latest purchases for Kev to work with of a  new pc, decent Wacom tablet plus specialist software comes in just over the 4K mark.  This is a lot of money for a small company like us to find and we can only do it by working our butts off!....lol!

So here are the images, enjoy!

Hopefully you found it interesting!  If you do then please tell your friends how fabulous we are, and if you don't then please tell us!

Thanks lots for your continued support that allows Kev to make the images he sees in his head and keeps him a happy little chappy.   The last 10 years of HF have been hard and many times we have doubted the validity of what we are doing and questioned that there must be easier ways to feed the kids and keep a roof over our heads but your positive comments and encouraging attitudes ( as well as buying our toys and 'stuff'...  lol!) keep us going and keep Kev happy (which keeps me happy as i can assure you that a 'grumpy' Kev is not a nice Kev to live with!!)

Thanks again

Sally :)

Stunning work - one tends to forget how much actual modelling work is required for items like the 'Walkers'. Can't wait for this to be available!

Indeed, which is why it requires a large bribe and months of waiting for inspiration to strike :)

(The bribe btw was an airsoft Colt 1911 and an airsoft Spas-12 :D)

The open cockpit version 'should' debut at the same time and we'll likely then sell the Walker in 'bits' i.e. Pick the Body, open or closed, then buy 2 of the weapon/arm options separately. The only possibly hiccup is if Kev decides the open cockpit version requires some fiddling with.

Do they have to be 'grav'? I have some concept stuff for the non-grav variety that I was hoping to convince Kev about at some point. There's a 'tiny' possibility of the Grymn being incorporated into a game setting next year and non-grav bikes would work better as grav places them further in the fiction part of sci-fi whereas they'd need to be a little less advanced for this setting.

I'd be quite happy with standard bikes... Akira style :D

Seconded.

Thirded! (Well obviously not an actual Akira bike but an extremely low rider is the concept)

Really? The Walker is all smooth and shiny, their carbine weapons are pretty sleek. I can see them being more 'squared off' rather than curvy lines etc. but still clean and smooth. You prefer them more grubbed up?

Yes!  But it shouldn't have any bearing on the sculpt.

I always saw the Grymn as being more "Industrialised" in look (if that makes sense) which the walkers have -the Akira style  bikes look too shiney and plastic - don't imagine the Grymn going down the asthetic pleasing lines look
Having said that it all depends on the PJ as Gi6ers points out !

STOPPIT.

STOP HIJACKING THIS THREAD WITH CONVERSATIONS ABOUT WHEELED BIKES, WHEN I ORIGINALLY HIJACKED IT TO TALK ABOUT GRAV BIKES.

Do they have to be 'grav'?

You haven't been here long have you?

YES. YES IT DOES.

And it has to be the one in my avatar.

Read the second quote in my signature. This has been going on a couple of years before that. It's now a matter of principle.  I've even offered to buy the current WIP to finish it...

Sigh...

...

Though i admit the idea of the grymn being part of a sci-fi universe is very good, I pray to everything that is holy, and many things that aren't, that you DO NOT go down a ZZ Top, low-tech biker route and ruin them...

I now return you to your frankly inane and irrelevant conversation about motor cycles...

I think that Kev would want to keep the Grymn as Grymn and not follow in the long out-of-date concept of what a biker Dwarf has been in the past.

Have you seen the walker updates?:

Looking good :)

Sort of loses me there - why does the wrist mounted gun need to held in the hand too? It's not like the hand can let go to do other stuff, because theres a permanent attachment running through the fist and joining the gun top and bottom. Surely it would be just simpler to fix the gun in place on a shoulder mount?

I can see an argument for a grippy hand walker, but not with a permanently attached massive gun .

Maybe the gun isn't a permanent fit and has to be picked up and automatically attaches to the cuff? That way, it can be swapped or dropped at the 'drop' of a hat?

I would personally, love to see the VOTOMs approach and for Kev to sculpt a rifle for them to hold like an infantry-man... but the cuff mounted weapons are cool.

I like it. Sure it's not practical but I think it looks cool, I'm not a hard sci fi person so itemd to ubuy what I like the look of rather than if it would actually be practical.

Keen to see what the options are, I like the open hands and the chain weapon and would ldeally like both, not necessarily with the hand gripping the chaingun.

Might be impractical to have a hand holding the chain gun but it stil looks pretty cool in my eyes  :yup:
