Mesaan invasion
« on: May 04, 2013, 03:58:40 AM »
After deciding to stick to fantasy miniatures and not buy any more sci fi miniatures again... I just spent a bunch on some sci fi miniatures. I recently bought the old xcom game from steam and had thought of beginning my own xcom UFO project. After looking about for some miniatures to use as the old school xcom game miniatures and still thinking, "an I'm not going to start a sci fi project" hasslefree sent out their newsletter and, being starwars day today, they had a sale going. So I had a quick peak and saw the mesaans and thought they would make great chrysalids! Then I thought, hold on, these are cool minis but I only need one or two for an xcom game, why not buy a whole bunch and use them as proxies for a space hulk type game. So I bought 8 of them and 2 leaders. These will probably be expanded on over time. Combined with the shipping containers I have just made I started thinking I could make a space hulk game in a shipping yard. The containers would work well enough to block line of sight just like space hulk and create an interesting looking game. I also really like the look of the khurasan 28mm troops and combining that with the APC they have that will be the good guys. Still to buy them yet. I figured that if I make a few office rooms they can be rooms just like in space hulk too. I already have some plans for making some in mdf.
Objective markers could be easy enough. Rescue the trapped humans instead of retrieving the CAT (that was the name wasn't it?) anyway that's the plan so far. I'll probably adapt the rules a fair bit. Now what I need to do is dig the rules out and refresh myself.

  If I had any real interest in painting sci fi I would go with the mystic warrior set and get another of Andy's dungeon trolls because they look like a certain foe from SW we shall call the Rocnar   Instead I made a pre salute order and missed out on the two gaul ladies.  Next time I guess.

Ahhh... Nostalgia attack!  :alien UFO: Enemy Unknown. The hours I have wasted playing that game. I've still got the Unknown Terror boxed set, complete with playguides... I can see it on my bookshelf from here... maybe just a quick game... for old times sake... oh, no... sectoid mind control... Lobster Men! Mind what you're doing with that high explosive, you fool! Look at that, a whole platoon gone.
Yep, I'm not going to be painting anything for a while.

Let us know how you get on with this project, sounds good

The invasion as begun, 4 more grunts plus a leaping mawe not pictured.

Unsure of colouring to paint them I though perhaps a dark purple with green tiger(ish) stripes or perhaps like wasps, yellow with black stripes.
Ideas?

perhaps something similar to the patterns on a tiger shark? Would help make them look more alien. Or, if you want to be really funky, the whale shark, though this would be trickier.

Here's the two bosses. I gave them different types of colouration. Differs markings of their species or something I guess. Nearly finished them now, just wash on the green and then pick out the little things like claws, eyes and mouth. Then onto the bases. I might look for some nice secret weapon ones, as they'll get to me quickly with a very close stockist.

Looks great :)

I decided on coloured washes over silver for mine but also went for contrasting colours.

I do like that colour choice.
The different markings could well reflect their rank/ social status/ whatever you wanna call it or maybe they're from different tribes/ clans/ strains (if their bred in a lab).

The colouring may be inspired by the UFO mutons from the original game.  :D

I'll say, they're great beef!  The first time I saw the one on the left in the top and middle pictures I wanted to see him done like Scorpion from Mortal Combat, because of the weapon the comes from is hand.

Looking forward to more. :yup:

Those look the business :). Great stuff :).

@leadhead - the one on the left immediately made me think of spider man... so I ended up getting one just to do this:

You should be, they look good from here

Base them up and then take pics with a background with a more smooth transition (the paper looks a bit severely bent in these pics) and then we can see what we can do with PS or GIMP to make them pop more :)

Thanks all.
What I think happened with the paper is that the top of the paper cast a shadow on the bottom part. I'm still wondering if I should spend a bit of extra cash to get some really nice bases for them, or just do the regular stuff and chuck some bits and pieces on top.

You could do. Or you could just spend a bit more time on the "usual" stuff and make it nicer. I like pre made bases, but I get a lot of satisfaction out of making something nice too

As for the paper, you need to make sure your main light source is in front of the minis and not behind as it is in your pic. Alternative if you have a lightbox (and this is makable too... mine is made out of old boxes and greaseproof paper) then from the side but slightly to the front

Okay so I made a quick light box out of an old cardboard box and some white paper.
I didn't use any lights with this photo and used the iPad enhance button the photo. Here's what happened.

Now if I just use a couple of lamps it should turn out pretty good I think.

Also,
Does anyone know where I might be able to find some extra large beastie that would fit in with the style of the mesaan. I have a mawe but am thinking even bigger!
