Does anyone know if they will be doing an extended version, as they did with the LoTR movies?

Probably when the next film gets released at the cinema. If memory serves me well, they did something like that for the LotR trilogy.

I really can't see New Line not releasing extended editions, and if the original releases were anything to go by, I'm pretty sure they'll be jam-packed with extras. At least I hope so?  :hmmm

Yes, there's definitely an extended version coming.

The Hobbit: Extended Edition After All
Peter Jackson Himself Confirms Longer Version

Two months ago, Warner Bros. released a preview calendar of upcoming releases in 2013 which also mentioned an extended edition of the first Hobbit entry An Unexpected Journey. It was due in the 4th quarter of 2013 and we also reported about it. Just one day after that, Warner rowed back and issued a statement declaring that the plans for the extended edition weren't final. They then deleted it from their calendar.

After that, it took quite some time until that topic came back on the agenda and this time, Peter Jackson himself confirmed the longer version while being at the screening on the Butt-Numb-A-Thon film marathon in Austin. He said that the extended edition will be released and will feature 20 to 25 additional minutes. This leads up to a final running time of roughly 189 or 194 minutes for the first film.

If nothing has changed with the release schedule of Warner Bros, the extended version of An Unexpected Journey could be expected in late 2013, shortly before The Desolation of Smaug will start in cinemas.

Well, pretty much like The Lord of the Rings, I know I'll end up with 3 copies of each film.

1 - the DVD/Blu-ray of the cinema release, on release.
2 - the extended cut DVD/Blu-ray.
3 - probably the trilogy extended edition boxed set after all 3 are done.

I wound up selling off my LOTR movies. After a number of viewings (and after the wow factor on the cinematics started to diminish,) I started to realize how bland and empty the dialogue was. After just a couple more viewings, I could no longer stand it.

I haven't even seen The Hobbit, and based on what everyone's saying, I doubt I'd enjoy it, either.
