If you're set on a 120mm base and can't decide on using any of our bits to qualify for the all-four categories, don't forget I've got a good range of 120mm (CD sized) bases in the store....

I am sorry but a base does not count as a miniature ;)... but it is a good idea for judging size and having a ready made base to add miniatures too :D

I'm glad people have liked the virtual medal thingy.

Now, talking about rules there are some things that may be worth pondering.

1) Maximum base size. I think it's better to have some limit, but 120mm may be restrictive if someone wishes to use big things such as Ian's marauder, or huge ones, as Andy's dragon. The diorama may end up being not just tight, but cluttered. But if that changes, what should be the new maximum size? I think 200mm across should provide enough room for anyone; with 150mm being an in-between alternative that, likely, will please nobody.

2) What counts as using a miniature. This should be taken for granted, but it may be worth writing it down. In order for a mini from any company to qualify as being used in the diorama, it must take an active role in the scene. That is to say that if you put a mini merely as background scenery (i.e. painting it grey and putting it as a statue) it won't count towards having a mini from that company. In order to count, it must be relevant. Ask yourself: if I remove the mini, does the diorama lose its meaning, or does it still make sense? If the former, the mini was a relevant part of the dio; if the latter it wasn't.

3) Minis from other companies. Will we keep this rule? It made sense forbidding the use of minis from other companies when this was an officially endorsed competition by the FoD companies. Now that it's unofficial we may change that; if we wish. Personally I think that we should allow using other companies, but keeping these points in mind:
The "plot" of the diorama should revolve around the FoD minis, with others just accompaning them or as background.
Outside minis should preferably come from boutique companies, and not the big companies in this hobby.
Since this DoD competition takes place in the FoD, I feel we should ask its "owners" for their approval of this change.

How about having a 120mm base size for 1 FoD company mini, 150mm for more than 1 FoD company mini, 200mm for ALL of the FoD companies?

A miniature is a miniature figure or monster (can be multi part). A table isn't, a base isn't, a weapon isn't and accessories aren't. You can convert the mini... but it must start as a miniature (and must be recognisable as that miniature when finished). You can use the miniature in ANY way you like but if it doesn't add to the scene/plot/story it is likely to count against you in the voting.

I am not keen on having other company's miniatures in this competition. The whole point is always to showcase the FoD company's wonderful miniatures and to have other company's miniatures distracts from that. It will be open for discussion but I would strongly recommend we keep the spirit of the official DoD and have it as FoD only. Scenery, model kits and accessories would be OK but not miniatures.

Works for me...

That's going to make much of fenris' range unusable. And with Eolith at 54mm and black scorpion a very different style it's going to be very tricky testing 3+ companies in so as to use a 200mm base...

IMO I think Fenris scenic bases should be allowed. Just like miniatures in the diorama that add relevance to the diorama and again it showcases what the FOD companies have to offer. Just my opinion on that. I also think only FOD companies involved.

Is eolith a company, it doesn't have a section in the FoD?

I have put the companies together like this:

Heresy including Spyglass (and Eolith... maybe?).
Hasslefree including Twilight
Black Scorpion
Fenris

Fenris has a host of miniatures... from Deep Ones to investigators and Beastmen of all flavours. I see no reason to include scenic bases more than I would etched brass from Hasslefree. There is nothing to stop you using the bases... they just won't count towards the miniature tally.

As for it being difficult to get all of the FoD companies into a diorama... isn't this all about accepting a challenge? If it was easy, it wouldn't be nearly as much fun.

I agree about sticking to FOD companies only - otherwise it may as well just be a generic painting comp.
I think Fenris bases/ accesories should be allowed as they are a FOD company and that is mainly what they do
Personally I am happy with the cd rule - it encourages people to be more inventive with the space available...........

The problem isn't about using the bases... that is a given because it is a Fenris product. Having it count towards the miniature tally is where the problem is... because it isn't a miniature.

The reason limiting the space to 120mm is a problem is because you have to shoe-horn at least four miniatures on the base for the 'all FoD company' subject and that won't necessarily allow for enough scenery to add flavour to the scene (hence the varying base sizes).

That said, there has to be a size limit otherwise things will get ridiculous.

Eolith and Spyglass are now fully merged into the Heresy range and count as Heresy figures. I paid for 'em and everything! The zO stuff isn't part of the Heresy range as that was bought by someone else.

As to size limit, according to Inso you've only got three months, so as I've said several times over the years of the official DOD, you need to scale your ideas into something that you can actually finish, and do a good job on to boot. We've all got a dream of building a working space station, but you don't need a whole station to tell the story of what happened in Storage Room 666...

PS If you're really stuck for how to merge the 4 companies, I'd suggest Time Travel might hold the answer, but how many others will do the same?

With all of the questions I am fielding and all of the 'mediation' I am having to do, it is impossible for me to enter the competition. It would not be fair and would certainly not be 'proper'.

For information, I was going to build a spiky pillar with a demon on top (Heresy) holding a teddy bear. At the base would be the little Hasslefree child with the helmet and wooden sword. He would have been converted to look up at the demon dangling his teddy over the edge of the spiky pillar. The title would have been "How am I going to get up there?"

The Adversity would be the spikes rather than fighting the demon because, being a child, he has only thought of getting to his teddy and not the battle to come.
