scratch built catapult

Sir Chiddlington-Smythe:
Apologies first if this is on the wrong page. I've almost finished putting together a catapult I've been working on for the last two weeks and am looking for feed back (I've also posted this on Frothers, Gawd help me):

Its for my ongoing orcish hoard so its meant too look cobbled together (that's what I'm telling myself anyway ). Not sure what I should do for crew - might try and convert one of the Heresy ogres and some hf goblins. I'm trying to buy in print from sculptors and avoid Ebay, so any tips would also be helpfull.

caerban:
A thinner string is my only comment really, it just feels a little too chunky even for orcs. Other than that looks good. Mebbe draw some grain on? Just open up the natural wooden grain gently with a pin a bit so it looks nice when you paint it.

Big Boris:
Good way to do rope, should you wish to go the long, hard way of replacing the string, is to get the longest lengths of wire that you can find (needs to be thin, eg 0.8mm, fuse wire or florist wire) take two of them, stick one end of each in a vice, the other ends into the chuck of a cordless drill, and slowly twist them together using the drill. This will give you a lovely long length of rope, about 1/2 the length of your starting wire IIRC.

Good effort so far, making devices like catapults etc is trickier than people think!

Sir Chiddlington-Smythe:
Good points, you guys are right on the width of the string, and thanks Andy for the wire tip, I will try that next time around (thinking of making a magic trebuchet think next). Wont restring this one for the moment, I think I'm reaching closure with this particular project - will probably chalk it up to experience.

Good tip also, although I will have to be very ginger if I do this. Not sure how much stress this can take before the joints bust! I was thinking maybe of doing free hand lines with a brush but that might be a bit mad.
