Please help my friend's daughter with cancer
« on: May 28, 2012, 05:29:01 PM »
I wouldn't ordinarily post this sort of thing, but one of my oldest friends' 12 yr old daughter, Niamh, has a rare form of cancer that needs treatment in the USA. The NHS will pay for her to fly over, but the family need to raise funds to take their 5 yr old son with them as the NHS don't cover that, and the amount of time they've had to take off work with the various rounds of chemo etc means they are short on funds. Leaving the 5yr old behind is not an option.

They have set up a donations page. Instead of buying a DVD that you won't watch, of backing yet another Kickstarter miniatures game, would you please consider giving a family that you don't know 10 so that they can fly the whole family to the USA for the three months of Proton Radiation treatment Niamh must have? Any excess funds will be donated to a Kid's Charity that has been of immense help to the family for the last few months.

thanks

Andy

Done.

I hope everything works out for them and they get the treatment ASAP.

I've put a link to here from my blog so hopefully the word will get out a little further too.

Same for me except for the tweet thing. My son is 11YO, doesn't need more explanations. God bless you all.

So, an update:

Thanks to everyone who chipped in and people raising money with sponsored this and thats and events and so on, the Yates family was able to raise enough money to take the whole fmaily to America for the summer for a course of Proton treatment. I've been watchign the daily reports on my friend's facebook page and they managed to make the most of it by taking both kids to see the sights in the Florida area and got them swimming lessons etc. You can read the whole blog here: http://quizknight.typepad.com/niamh/

But after eleven weeks of daily three hour sessions of focussed radiation therapy, the Yateses have returned home to Scotland and have just been to the Doctor for their first post-treatment exam. I'll post what Julie said on FB:
Quote
First clinic appointment since finishing treatment today went really well. Dr Edgar is classing Niamh as being in remission and cancer free. She also said that her gut feeling is that it won't come back - no promises because she can't do that but, she feels it's cured. It won't be confirmed properly until after her first MRI which will be in early December but by the looks of things that will hopefully just be a technicality.

So now we just have to try to get back to normal - or as normal as our family is (which is not very normal)

I'm made up for her I really am. Quite the tear in my eye, especially since a lot of young kids she met along the way in various wards and clinics did not survive.

Thanks to all of you who chipped in, no matter how much it was, just know that you helped Niamh beat cancer. :applause:

I've been watching this too and it is brilliant news. Let's hope that the MRI clears her and the whole family can move on from the ordeal they've had so far.

Excellent stuff :)

Just a very quick update - scan results were very good news - Niamh has No Evidence of Disease so it looks like we are dancing with NED at the moment. It's all going in the right direction..........to say we're relieved is an understatement. Next scans in 3 months!

Here's to a great weekend - Paul and I are going away for a couple of nights on our own and Niamh's going to grandmas to get spoilt.

Thanks again to all of you who contributed to pay for this little girl's cancer treatment. The remaining funds are being used to set up a charity to help others in the same situation. :applause:

That is great news about Niamh! I have been waiting to hear the news about the scan and am well chuffed for everyone involved. Let's hope this has permanently done the trick and the whole family can rest easy from now on :D
