Not so cool... but it could be.
« on: May 25, 2012, 07:52:53 PM »
My love / hate relationship with GW continues with their latest sneak-peek; the Storm Talon:

When I first saw it I thought how ridiculous it looked...

... but then I started looking at it with a view to converting it and I thought:
  • Remove the chin guns
  • Remove the side pods
  • Lengthen the tail
  • lose the downward pointing tail-fin
  • Work out where to put some weapons
  • Work out where to put the undercarriage
I reckon with the right motivation, you could build something interesting from this chibi-flier.

It reminds me of the G Police gunship. Its a nice looking kit with plenty of conversion potential :)

I really, really want to like this figure but it's just far too front cluttered and front heavy.

It really could be cool.  Side gun pods on the front need to be 2/3 smaller without the chin-chain-gun.  Would you keep it flying or put legs/tracks/grav units on it?

The best part of the blue pj is the bird poo all over it.

To be honest, Inso, reading your "conversion guidelines" makes me wonder whether you'd just convert the stormtalon into a stormraven.

    :D

No where near close. By stretching it out lengthways and removing all the rubbish from the front, I'd hope to make it more sleek rather than like a flying brick. It would still be a gunship but more Apache than breeze block :).

Oh... they are now up for advance order...£27-50 each.

(snark mode on)   nice to see GW have worked out how to make an aerofoil wing (snark mode off)
it looks like some one described ( badly) a helo gunship and a jump jet to someone who's never seen one, who them built it. As you said Inso  the cheek guns are mad, why have them fixed when the chin has a turret?, and why bury the sensors in the nose?  It seems totally counter intuitive.
for the price there asking you could get a cheap 1:48 Apache kit and an A10 kit and bash something nicer.
Really really disappointing
a happy dauber

But you couldn't then take that to your local GW and play or enter official tournaments/armies on parade etc. Whils gw remain the biggest company in terms of high st presence and playerbase its like shooting fish in a barrel! Want a flyer in your marine army? It's gotta be that or one of the other similar modeld

Honestly... I'd cut off the tail behind the silvery sticky out bits (technical military term I'm sure :) ) and toss it. Remove the wings and cheek guns. Then beef up the cheek guns from my bits box and add them to those wing ball joint sockets as shoulder mounts. Then I'd add a hip section and walker legs underneath. And less than 3% of that would be to annoy Brandlin ;) I honestly think it looks like someone binned a walker project and stapled some dodgy flier parts onto it.

I can see what you mean. I thought that the cockpit would make a good walker and maybe the legs from one of these would work:

http://dwartist.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/khurasan-15mm-garn-assault-unit.html

I have decided to order one to see whether I can do anything interesting with it. I'll order from Triple Helix to save money... it still isn't cheap for a 'chopper-upper' though :(.

I like the Ork stuff better. The space marines seem to be making their vehicles with the largest silhouette's possible to ensure the enemies best chance of hitting them

Still, I'm sure they'd stop producing something if it didn't sell.

All that said; I can't wait to see your conversion!

It looks like they were inspired by this...

But didn't have a CAD system that could draw curves!

Utter unremitting bum fudge. To the point that adding legs might actually improve it!
