Well-written. :)

Fantasy armor, in general, makes the armorer in me cringe. Very little of it is practical and some not even possible.

I know that feeling...

Yup well written and well argued however I have no real issue with scanty armor as long as there's a reason for it; forcefield, magic etc.

Fully armored ladies: Practical = Yes, Sexy/fun to paint = No.

My two cents being, my favorite/nearly only mini subjects are all scantily/un-clad/.  It's make believe, it's NOT supposed to be realistic!  Besides, a goblin can't kill her if he can't stop oggling her :silly

To be honest I have no problems with the whole "chainmail bikini" thing as I think it makes the figures more aesthetically pleasing.

I absolutely hate naked or topless ones though as on the whole I think it just looks cheap and makes for a tacky figure.

Just my opinion, don't expect everyone to agree with it.

I get torn. Yes, there's the sexy issue but to be honest I really like all versions of Tiriel and particularly the 40mm with all the extra armour detail. It feels that much more authentic and she's still pretty sexy. And she's still great fun to paint...
... all 4 times I've started then stripped her :)

Paint what you enjoy painting, that's what it's about.  Unless you're getting paid to paint, then paint what pays.

Might be an argument if all that the genre is to someone is a source of almost-porn; but otherwise, I've heard the 'it's not real!' bit a lot, and it's still not convincing no matter the specific subject.

I haven't read the linked 'psychological claptrap by supposed experts...bla, bla bla' so I could have completely got the wrong idea (if it isn't someone clever trying to explain away the nudity-inducing female fantasy armour, then I've got the wrong end of the stick)...but why?  Why try to explain female fantasy armour?  It is just for titillation...nothing more.

Proper female armour is just the same stuff blokes wear.  Fantasy female armour is there just to give nerds the horn.  It really doesn't need any 'expert' coming along and having a debate over it...it is really that simple.

I quite enjoyed that article. Made a lot of sense. Nothing new, just laid out logically rather than as a rant which is refreshing

The other side of the coin is that the aesthetics often win out and practicality is secondary since it's all make believe anyway

Either way, there's a market for both avenues, as has been said...

Usualy when Kev's looking for an excuse to justify comicaly large oversized weapons again.

Oh, and when people are trying to justify porn mail armour too.

Proper female armour is just the same stuff blokes wear.

Possibly with slightly different arranging of the padding on the inside.

You should, it's a nice article. It's not 'psychological claptrap by supposed experts...bla, bla bla' it's a guy who makes plate armor for a living suggesting appealing and practical compromises.

I guess it's one of those things that splits opinion :)
I have LARPer friends of the female persuasion (particularly those who are also medieval re-enactors) who spend a lot of time modifying male armour to give them something that at least has verimisi... verisim... looks like it'll work, saying things like "I want to look like a competent fighter whilst retaining a bit of sexiness, not some sex object" and other female LARPers saying "Seriously, I want to look like a sex object, cut all those bits away and if you could attach maille nipple tassles too that'd be great!"
It's all about what you want and what you like.
Unless it's the dynamics of dragon musculature, in which case it'd better look like it works or I'm comin' for ya!!! ;)

I did say I could have got the wrong idea...but when all is said and done, whether it's an armourer explaining the need for chainmail bikinis or a pseudo expert, it all equates to the same thing.

Having just read it, he summed it up similarly to me...chainmail bikinis are ridiculous, proper armour isn't and the way fantasy females are armoured is eyecandy for the masses who demand it...so nerd porn :).

TBH back in the 80's heysay of the Fantasy RPG, mostly under the sheer weight of volume of Larry Elmore and Boris Valejo we simply caved in and decided that fmale armou shared the same protection levels as its male counterpart through distraction...  This was of course suggested by the ladies in our group, but was rather jumped upon in amused enthusiasm.

I do have to give kudos for the pic of the male equivalent, which has me laughing until it set my Bronchitis off again...  So it really did laugh until it hurted...  That one pic makes the whole point.

Right.  I went a bit frothy there.  Sorry about that, and sorry to Leadhead.  But here's what's winding me up.

I said 'it's not real' might be an argument.  But it's not.  It's avoiding the argument.  It's a dismissal.  It's a refusal to offer someone a proper response (and invalidates the opposing view too, if it's not just a cover for a lack of one), no matter what the discussion and how trivial or short-lived it might be.  You might disagree, but IMO the possibility of a grain of misogyny and the image of 'sad losers horny for elves' might be a wee smidge more relevant for said discussion, and less appropriate to sweep under the carpet, than 'can it fly?'
It also belittles appreciation of fantasy, in this case bringing it all down to the level of something a 14-yo might bring into the bathroom, then trampling it to bits anyway.  Of course it's not real!  That's not the point.  It's one thing to take fantasy too seriously, and most of you know fingers can be pointed at me for it; but aiming a metaphorical kick at it's shin and running away giggling is not a brilliant substitute.  Not on a forum populated by fantasy fans, centred around selling and talking about fantasy.  You might as well run into the middle of a library, scream 'books are just dead trees!', and run out again.  Way to go, Che.  You sure contributed there.

I could even accept 'I just like it', and say nothing more.  That's your own preference, and that's okay.  But 'it's not real' is a useless thing to say, and for me pushes all the wrong buttons.
