Modelling genitalia

PiGFoetus:
May not be a popular subject for polite company, but as I'm currently tickling Azaroth's scrotum with sable (I've chosen to highlight him from infernal flames from below ... hence how this idle wandering of the mind has manifested itself), I wondered how the sculptor tackled the subject of tackle, as it were. Ladies endowments are popularly sculpted in miniature as well we know, but contrary to the classical sculptors, in miniature the sculpting of the male generative organs are often omitted or simply coyly masked with fur. I have a few miniatures that go contrary to this bashfulness ... generally Ogres and Trolls openly and defiantly displaying their wares (in dormant rather than tumescent state, I add, for fear of branding myself a pervert ... though could there be an as yet untapped specialist market?).

I know Azaroth's shaven (dare I suggest waxed?) sack well enough now, but his primary weapon is shielded by fur (whether his own or another's is not readily discernable ... his chest is hairless, his shanks are hircinely hirsute ... go figure). So to Andy and you other sculptors out there faced with meticulously crafting natural pose and musculature ... what goes through your mind when reaching the never-mentionables on a male figure?

Big Boris:
Does the model need one? How big should it be? Is it passive or angry or flopping about the place due to running? Do we have any sausages in the freezer? I'm pretty hungry. Would it be better to cover this? Is this me being puerile or logical? Will people buy this more or less if it has it's wang out. Maybe I should provide half an elf, called Merkin as an alternative. Am I wasting my time with willies when I should be scultping something more profitable?

That sort of thing. Did you ever see the Netherlord 2 up close?

 The Netherwang! Certainly the finest example of an anatomically correct mini I've seen. I'm not prudish when it comes to such things, in fact I have a few female minis with as much detail, so it seems only fair to balance that. I'll be using that option when I finally get around to putting him together!

Big Boris:
That was the least offensive option of the three Netherwangs I had in mind. One of the other two had a drooling ring of teeth and eyes on stalks.

For me, I always think it's funny (funny odd, not funny ha-ha) to see a demon running around with a loin cloth or a succubus wearing a bikini. I mean, really. Malevolent, infernal beings, some of whom's job it is to tempt humans into sexual encounters… and they conform to 20th century modesty taboos? Ugh.

Or what's worse: male demons sculpted naked but like a Ken doll. Eeek. I can't help but cringe when I see that.

I think it's awesome that Andy and Kevin don't cater to the pathological fear of male nudity that exists in certain segments of the market. Maybe you don't have that over there in the UK as much, but here in America, we do and to a frightening extent. I've honestly heard men make comments with a straight face about not wanting to see male nudity because it might turn them gay.

Wait, what? However did we all get through high school gym showers and manage to stay straight? (ugh, the stupid… it hurts)

Sorry, didn't mean to rant. To answer the original question, I don't think it's that big of a deal for most sculptors, and certainly not for those who have had formal art training. After a couple of sessions with nude models, it just kinda stops being a big deal (if it was to begin with). I'm nowhere near the sculptor Kev or Boris is, but what goes through my mind when sculpting genitals is the same as any other part of the body or any prop or clothing item. Does it look right? What do I want it to look like? How do I accomplish that.

Though I will admit that I can't help but to anthropomorphize the little guys and feel bad when I have to cut off and re-sculpt certain parts.
