Neal Ashers stuff is a lot of fun IMO.

Alastair Reynolds Space operas are the nuts.

Altered Carbon - Richard Morgan  (good hard sci-fi)

Fantasy  - The Deed of Paksennarion Elizabeth Moon (I'm a bit of a fan of hers TBH)

The Dresden Files - Jim Butcher

Space Captain Smith - Toby Butcher (sorta comedy steampunk sci-fi space opera)

Anything by Peter Watts is awesome (which is fortunate because you can pick up all his books for free from his website if you nose around) as long as you're not concerned with the very grim and depressing.

I've just finished "One" by Conrad Williams. It's a cross between The Road and a Zombie movie. Although the Zombies are more dangerous than your George Romero Zombies. Might not be what your looking for, but it was still a really good read.

Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey - space opera
anything by Joe Abercrombie - fantasy

These are both modern, very well-written books with detailed, imaginative stories and excellent characterisation, and plenty of plot twists. They are both excellent.

The Felix Castor books by Mike Carey might not be what you want. They are set in modern London, where magic, ghosts, and were-creatures have returned. But Carey puts a new spin on it, they get better as they go on (though you should start from the first one), and they are just very good books.

Try Stephen Donaldson's The Gap series (sci-fi). That will blow your socks off. I don't think I've ever felt violated by a set of books before......I found the first book very difficult to read, but come the end my allegiances  to the characters had been spun on their head, turned inside out and actually left me wanting more. It's one hell of a ride :D

I'm somewhere in the middle of a fantastic book called The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.  I'm not sure when it's released but it's definitely worth a look.

I'm a big fan of the Lord Darcy series by Randall Garrett - steampunkish murder mystery blended with magic. Well worth a look.
