Expanding the sci-fi troopers?
« on: July 31, 2011, 11:56:43 PM »
Personally, I flippin' love the troopers, I have eight waiting to be assembled and painted, and have to keep stopping myself from buying more til they're done. I love the faceplates, the armour, the rifles, everything. They're awesomesauce on toast.

What'd really be great (IMO) is if you expanded them with some specialists. Obvious choices would be heavy weapons, snipers, medics, etc. Also wouldn't be bad to see some kind of psi-troopers? And how about a new version of the Major with armour to match the troopers? I know I already plan on using my Major as an officer in games, and I reckon you could make a little army range out of the troopers with just a few specialist units.

Of course, I come prepared with numerous ideas as to how these might be represented more interestingly than mere arm-swaps.

So for example, special weapons could be plasma guns, missile launchers, flamethrowers, heavy machine-guns, or sniper rifles, among others. Along with special weapons, perhaps each member has armour modules designed to enhance their effectiveness with their chosen armament?

For example, scopes attached to the faceplate of snipers, additional ammo storage on the back for heavy machine-gunners (maybe even belt-fed ;) ) Perhaps a plasma gunner would have coolant tanks on their backs, and maybe increased armour to protect them in the case of an overheat etc?

A psychic trooper presents plenty of great modelling possibilities. Not only do you have the option to have all kinds of weird poses (telekinetic levitation, f.x.), but what kind of additional paraphernalia would a psi-trooper carry to complement their abilities? Would they maybe have a modified helmet with cables coming from the back, respresenting cranial modifications? Maybe they carry different armament too, possibly even some kind of device that they can channel their powers through (melee or ranged)?

Here's a few images for inspiration: - Sniper armour mods? - The guy in the red may give some reinforced armour ideas? - I was always quite partial to this plasma gun design. Maybe it'll give you some new non-GW ideas to spark your own creativity?

Any other suggestions for the troopers from anyone else? This is just what occurred to me in the space of about twenty minutes.

I've been a lurker on the FoD for a while, but I've decided to post and bump this thread because I want something! I've been thinking of rebooting my old Imperial Guard army, but I'd really like to use Heresy Sci-fi troopers for the guardsmen. But to do that, I need special weapons! So Andy, please can you do some troopers (or just additional weapons) that have grenade launchers, plasma guns, meltaguns, shotguns, etc. Maybe even some heavy weapon teams with autocannons, heavy bolters (chunky looking 'heavy machineguns'), laser cannons, mortars, missile launchers, etc. Obviously you'd have to model them slightly differently and call them different things, but stuff along those lines!

A further bump – any chance of some sci-fi trooper casualties?
I like the ideas above a lot :)

Will be doing some more work on those troopers today. January seems to have been a lot of dull non-sculpting stuff so far...

Andy posted on Facebook:
Suggestions for future equipment/heads/vehicles/whatevaz for Troopers are most welcome! Will be doing all existing weapons in range, obv.

I did a little research on the Army's website, and thought their infantry roles might prove handy for inspiration beyond weapon swaps.

Fairly obvious – but a prone missile launcher model and loader would be great. For versatility/sales and to sci-fi him up a bit, having a prone model with options for a missile launcher arm, a rifle arm and a laser/phaser/maser cannon arm would be great. How about a sci-fi style loader/spotter to go with him, too? The spotter pose could double up as help for mortars and snipers, too.

I'd love to see a specialist with coils of rope over his shoulders, demo charge on his backpack, and sci-fi mine detecting/deactivating equipment. A cool touch might be some dungarees and overloaded tool belt? Some tin snips in his hands – as though cutting barbed wire or defusing a bomb – would be a really fun little pose for miniature modellers :)
pic of tool belt for inspiration

This role is pretty much covered by the basic infantry models already. Perhaps a sprue of alternative heads? The skull head from the recent pack would be a cool 'thing' that your sci-fi elite commandos might have? Perhaps integrated into more of a mask, with a smaller slimline helm?

This is probably best tackled with a good pose – perhaps with a big wrench or carjack slung over one shoulder? If the arm were separate, the body pose would work for a rifle slung over one shoulder, like your trenchcoat gang sniper (I love that pose).

I'd like to see a sci-fi drummer/piper/bugler. The website notes that infantry musicians are trained as soldiers first – machine gunners, in fact – so perhaps this role could be covered with a small accessory sprue like the recent 'Sergeant bastard' one? A pipe, set of bagpipes, drum and bugle, as well as some sci-fi binoculars, notepads, gesturing hands etc?

This cover digital communication these days – I'd love to see a guy with a cool communications backpack and laptop/dataslate thingie. Hasslefree do a brill Grymm data specialist, and it'd be lovely to see a human-size counterpart. Another option would be to include a throat mic, and to have one hand up to some sci-fi comms device near the ear. Poses like this are really characterful, and the one-pose metals would shine with stuff like this, that's hard to do convincingly in multipart plastic, so you might as well make a virtue of proper metal.
Inspiration pose example

Like the commando and driver, this is very much a pose-driven role, I think. A great opportunity for some non-action poses, though – perhaps with his/her helmet off and held in one hand, or a foot up on a cool sci-fi crate?

This crosses over with the infantry signaller above a little, but the game Infinity has 'hackers' that have a more active battlefield role. Perhaps that might provide some inspiration? To differentiate this role from the signaller, perhaps a specialist body yoke/helmet combo could allow future specialists to make active IT work?

DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA! Awesome. Kneeling, prone, upright (Arnie-style) would all be awesome. A spotter/loader/runner carrying additional ammo crates would be cool. In fact, the Infantry storeman could fit in here, carrying along some extra barrels/ammunition?
I'd love a machine gunner with bandoliers of ammunition slung around his neck.

Great potential for this role – a yoke/rig/backpack containing medical material, sleeves rolled up and surgical gloves/mask on; plus a magnifier/light attachment to his/her helmet? I'd love to see this as a mini-diorama with a separate casualty marker or two.

A sci-fi mortarman might have a mini computer/laptop/slate/scanner – or perhaps a sweet triangulating attachment for the helmet – for helping with ranges, and it's noted that they're amongst the fittest and strongest infantry (because of having to lug around a mortar, presumably). A good chance to do those bulging muscles Heresy does so well. I'd love to see a mortarman with his rifle slung and his hands holding up a magnocular/occupied with comms. Again, a good choice to go with the spotter/loader I suggested above, and perhaps the storeman and IT specialist? With mortars being a bit set back from the battlefield, there's more opportunity for characterful, non-action poses.

Prone, crawling, running with a cut-down rifle... any of these poses would be great. A brill opportunity for a ghillie suit or active camouflage device, perhaps? This would also be a lovely opportunity for cool poses involving an integrated base (broken wall, pile of rubble etc), like peering round a corner or vaulting over a low wall.
Integrated cover on base example
Peering round corner, though it'd look cooler if his back were against the wall and one hand were free, in my opinion.

Everyone loves a sniper, and there are some cool poses out there:

A partner with a scope is pretty common in these images, and would help to to make the set look professional and military rather than paramilitary – particularly if the scope/rangefinder etc. was particularly sci-fi and awesome.

Anyway, hope those help :)
Looking forward to seeing any more stuff you do for this range. I think the big strength your miniatures have – particularly in the metal medium – is the brilliant characterful posing, like the smoking ganger sentry and security guard cracking his knuckles.

Those are the miniatures that stick with me, so I'd love to see similar 'character poses'. Here are some ideas that you might find interesting and useful (or might not, of course!)
1) Standing with rifle slung, removing helmet/tipping helmet back/removing shades.
2) Crouching, with free hand on the floor for balance, and rifle held close to the body.
3) Lounging on a low wall, searching through a webbing pouch.
4) Rifle slung over the shoulder, helmet in other hand.
5) Peering over a low wall/round a corner Example, but crouching/squatting. The free hand on the wall is what makes it look cautious to me, and that's cool.
6) I have no idea what holding your rifle like this is called (port arms?), but it looks cool. Rifle held across chest
7) Gesturing. Pointing, waving, yelling, making hand signals (no, not those hand signals ;))... all are awesome.

I put together Trooper pack 2 last night. One of the figures currently has separate arms, and it struck me that the basic model would make a great basis for a riot cop/Judge/Enforcer. Any thoughts on an expansion sprue of truncheons, riot shields and Judge Dredd-esque helms?

Not a bad idea actually.

And of course seeing as they are supposed to be UK originating troopers, perhaps we ought to train a couple up for Fuel Deliveries and Firefighting duties?   :paranoid2: :drevil2:

Bump!  I know it's been a while since anything happened here, but a thought occured to me.  I don't know if anyone would like the idea but it came to me that the troopers could do with some assault team members.  Yes I know that there are already heavy weapon guys, but I was thinking more along the lines of riot squad like full body shields.  Not like the clear ones used by real riot squads but a larger arm mounted version.  Something large enough to be able to effectively hide behind, but still able to walk with the thing attached to your arm.  Going to nerd out and reference the shields the hunters carry in halo, but, ridgid not hinged at the elbow and designed to dig the tip into the ground to provide an angled, deflective surface rather than an impact absorbing surface.  Obviously the body armor would be more than the regular troopers and the weapons would be heavier and more destructive.  Gauss rifles, plasma cannons, personal rocket launchers and the like.

Just a thought but it wasn't happy just living in my head, so there it is.

There are two things I would like to add to the mix.

A few females (just standard troopers but a range of sizes... from skinny to big-boned)
A couple of big-boned male troopers.

I am not suggesting obese troopers, just a few more chunky ones because in every service there will always be a range of body types.
