54mm science fiction minis
« on: July 23, 2011, 09:04:41 PM »
Here I am asking for help from the collective wisdom of the FoD.

I want to create some thematic bookends using 54mm miniatures. For example, my fantasy books will be held together with two bookends, one sporting Andrea's Hortak, and the other with Draconia's Xendra.

For the science fiction books, I have only found three minis. First one is from Reaper, Belladonna. And the other two are from Andrea, Gabriel Blackburn and Sgt. Connor.
None of them are bad, but they aren't exactly what I'm looking for, either.

So have any of you any suggestions? I've never cared much about 54mm, and I know no science fiction ranges in that scale (except for GW's Inquisitor, which has no mini that I like). If someone is more erudite in the field than me, his/her help in finding the perfect 54mm scifi mini would be greatly appreciated.

I don't exactly know. Something along the lines of those two minis I've mentioned (Belladonna and Blackburn), for example. That is, space smugglers/salvagers. Or scifi mercenaries. Of course, some troopers in the style of HF's Debra would be the dog's danglies. Those kind of things.

Pizarro miniatures via El Greco do a couple that may be of use - http://www.elgrecominiatures.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d129_Pizarro_Black_Anvil.html#p1791. The Tyron miniature would definitely fit the mercenary category.

There are some older Andrea ones in the Historex catalogue, but they take some finding, e.g. a not predator

Do they have to be full figure?

Hmm. Dark Age's 54mm "Lucky" might fit the bill.

Draconia Miniatures do a miniature called Ehion (I'm not entirely sure how that's supposed to be pronounced).

Mad Puppet Miniatures have afew interesting busts. The female cyborg one's the enlarged head of a full body sculpt the same guy did for another company. I can't remember the company's name (probably now out of business) but I've got her somewhere. Sitting on a wall with big blades for arms. I can't remember what scale she was 'though.

Oh and since you mentioned them Reaper do a lovely las sin semi futuristic sci fi military gear. She's 72mm so she might be a bit large for you but she paints up quite well :).

Thanks for the suggestions.

@ zemjw: That Tyrion is rather cool, and would be a nice companion for Belladonna.

@Balgin: I'm searching for full figures. Dana is not a 54mm mini, but I'm open for bigger scales, too, so thanks for that suggestion. In fact, she may complement that space marine from Andrea (he's in 1:32 scale, but also 80mm due to the powered armour and scale creep). Anyway, since Reaper is known for not sticking to a scale, would you mind measuring your Dana for me?

I already did :p. She's about 74-75mm to the top of her head and that includes a 2mm non integral base (so she could be mounted on something smaller/larger). I don't recall them ever claiming she was a specific scale.

Sacred blade and 40mm

That's the one. I've got her lurking somewhere in the unpainted lead pile.

One trick for gauging Reaper miniature size is to look at the triangles on the right hand side of most of their new pictures. The first one's about half an inch high and the second's about an inch. That being said they're not exactly next to the miniature and they're flat on the tabletop as opposed to being on a base. But they're a good indicator for a rough estimate. It's kind of like Sally including the ruler in some of the HF photos so people can see the size of what they're getting.

If you change your mind on Belladonna, I've got her in the lead pile and she'll never see paint, but would work well in exchange for cash ;)

Yes, I know.
I have another trick to 'measure' minis on-line. I compare them to the base, and I do a 'rule of three'. Gives a nice estimation (unless the base is square and rotated, which proves useless).
And thanks for measuring the mini.

If you don't mind waiting (no money now, but expenses incoming), I may take you on that.

She's sat unpainted for three years, a few weeks won't hurt :)

There's always the Denizen Miniatures 90mm range? They are mainly fantasy, but have one Sci-Fi figure (Nadia Murphy). Have a look at the gallery on the page: http://www.denizenminiatures.co.uk/
Rule #37: There is no "overkill". There is only "open fire" and "I need to reload".
