The Pirate lasses
« on: January 24, 2011, 11:54:56 AM »
So, displaying my painted miniatures for the very first time on these boards...

As a birthday-present, I received the whole female Pirate-crew, as the giver knew I wanted to start playing Legends of the High Seas.

Couple of months later, I prepped the figs, made them a couple of in-theme bases, primed them and started painting them.
And now they are finished :

The complete crew :

Now that I see the pictures I realise one non-Black Scorpion fig snuck in.
Sorry for that, she's a limited edition from the HellDorado game, and as there's only 9 female pirates, I wanted to have 10 of them.
So at the moment she proxies as the captain, probably until Crisis 2011 when I'll be buying myself a new captain.
Seen as he'll be the boss of all these women, i'll probably call him Rooster

About the colour-scheme, I deliberately selected a limited palette, which I then applied to all figs, but alternating the surface areas where the colours were applied.
That way the clothing looks rag-tagged through the wole crew, whilst keeping an overall cohesion.
And the red serves as an eye-catcher and a sort of red-thread throughout the crew.

I hope you guys like what you see, as they took quite some time to finish.

And yes, I know, I am not good @ painting eyes

Thanks, and of course I will!

I'll buy that book, even if it's only to look at the front cover
I had already seen the announcements on the Black Scorpion website, and I must say I'm very eager to see the real thing when it comes out.

Nice painting and good colour choices

The basing is good too, but does give the impression they are standing on broken plants rather than a corss section of deck

Thanks guys!

Ben Brownlie, could you maybe try to pinpoint why exactly they look like they are standing on broken plants?
Too much green maybe? Or is it because they are too dark?

My guess would be he meant planks rather than plants and as to why he thought it my opinion would be because of the rough uneven edges if it was a cross section of a deck you would expect it to be smoother on the ends (as if a saw had cut it through straight) you get the broken plank look by having non-uniform ends to the planks.

Sorry, my rubbish typing

I meant planks

And yes, the edges being neater (but the tops as they are) would have given a better impression of decking imo

But still good

Nice job.

I have these two sets and have been holding off painting them because I cannot seem to figure out a passable paint scheme nor how to do female skin (red lips, paler, what?)

I like them. A slightly dirty look to them that suits a pirate scene. Well painted figs.  :applause: :applause:

Thanks for clarifying that!

Planks makes so much more sense than plants, I was breaking my head over that remark (was I really that far off the mark with my painting? :whah?:)

About the planks, I had made them that way, following what I saw on a pier (is that an english word, pier? a wooden structure that goes from the land into the sea, you can walk on it).
It was clear that the pier was well maintained, but still rough on the edges, probably due to years of the elements battering at it unforgivingly, and the salt  moisture will have helped a great deal too, no doubt.
Now if a maintained structure already suffered, I gathered that a non- or less maitained structure should suffer even more. Hence the rough edges.

Since these figs are piratessessesses, I gathered they wouldn't be strolling around in one of the main trade-ports where the cash is to do decent maintenance.
They'd more likely be walking around on some backwater, unofficial port somewhere out of sight of the powers that be.

All of that text, just to say that I did think the bases through, and I'm just explaining the reasoning why I did what I did. If I'd have made a Governor with his escort, I would have made my planks a lot more rigid and straight-edged, no worries

Still, all criticism is welcome, as it was clearly your intention to help me along with a heartfelt opinion.

ErikB, I did use quite the pale flesh (GWS Elf Flesh with small amounts of Skull White mixed in there), and for the lips, I opted for a light red wash over them, rather than painting them with red, which would have given the impression of them having used lipstick. Somehow, in my mind, female pirates do not use lipstick...

You'll get used to my typing eventually ... sorry

Ah... that makes sense. I had pictured them that you'd based them on a ship and I was thinking that the thing would sink if the planks were that poorly maintained :)

Still,

Your remark makes sense...
Mmmmmh.

I've got to think about details that I could possibly add to the base, which you'd find in a port/on a pier and that don't refer to a ship.

Food for thought indeed... :scratchhead:

Again, thanks for all the nice comments!

Sinec everyone likes the bases, and I can imagine people wanting to do bases with planks for their pirates, here's an explanation on how I made mine :

°I went to Mc Donalds (which without any doubt can be replaced by the Burger-shop of your preference) and ordered a Cheeseburger
°I went to their coffee-stand and started stuffing wooden coffee-stirrers in my pockets
°I didn't stop when the guys behind the counter started looking at me and discussing about me
°I did stop when two came out from behind the counter and walked in my direction
°I went home (eating the Cheeseburger on the way)
°I took out my exacto-knife and started cutting the stirrers to the size of a 25mm base.
°As I wanted that rotten, decayed look on my planks, I only cut halfway through the stirrers, and then snapped them off. This way, you gat a natural looking broken wood on the edges.
°Here and there, I amended the breaks, adding more wear and tear with my exacto-knife
°If you want neat-cut planks, skip the snapping part and simply cut straight through the stirrers

And voilà, wooden-planked bases.

As for painting them, I started out with a Bestial Brown, and added more and more Bubonic Brown and Bleached Bone to that for the consecutive highlights.
I painted on the nerfs in the wood, but I guess you could score them in with a ballpoint pen.
Then, after the final highlight, I added green and blue washes to the more recessed areas (in between planks, in the wera and tear,...).
Once that had dried I applied a final, diluted Brown wash over the whole of the base.

I hope that that helped/inspired someone for their bases

Alternative to stuffing your pockets with Burger Kings stirrers - Ask for some... Especially if you ever happen to be in my Starbucks store... we get them by the boxful and they're not really expensive, we can probably spare a couple of dozen!!

Resurrecting this thread which is more than a year old...

But it is with good reason  :wry:

I passed by the Black Scorpion stand on Crisis 2011, and walked home with a whole crew of undead Pirates, the Cutlass! rulebook and, most imprtantly, some reinforcements for my Pirate Lasses :

Some Cannons which I have painted in the meantime

Now I know that these are guys, but as women don't hold with all that technical stuff, they shangaied a couple of lads into cannon-duty for them.

Also, I received a free fig of Mercator at the entrance of Crisis, who'll make a very nice navigator for my crew!

I haven't played Cutlass! yet  but I have already played Legends of the High Seas a couple of times with my pirate lasses. They did relatively well, but suffer from not having nifty equipment such as blunderbusses and such
