Latest Hobbit movie news
« on: October 22, 2010, 09:56:21 AM »
Filming of the Hobbit has been given the green light by the studio and is due to begin in February with Peter Jackson directing.

There are still some ongoing union disputes, which could result in a move from New Zealand to England.

Martin Freeman has been cast as Bilbo.  (I think he's probably a good choice.)

Richard Armitage has been cast as Thorin.  (Not sure I can visualise this.)

Remember, all the castmembers who will be dwarves are going to be unrecogniseable under all the makeup and that the way they do things is to cast six footers as the dwarves so they're in scale to those cast as Hobbits (usually around 5'6 or so).

I'm still trying to come to terms with Aidan Turner from Being Human as a Dwarf :D

Martin Freeman as Bilbo could be amazing. The other actors as dwarves is a bit more of a leap. John Rhys-Davies was still recognisable under the Gimli makeup, but he already had a waistline suitable for a dwarf, as it were. These actors I have a hard time imagining as broad, stocky dwarves. Mind you, that aside, I'm really starting to look forward to the film coming out!

Whatever one's gripes about Peter Jackson, his casting has always been top notch. I'm willing to wait and see how this all turns out. I've only seen his google images, but Martin Freeman certainly has something of the 'hobbit' about him. The others... we'll see.

Martin Freeman as a Peter Jackson style hobbit I can imagine very easily. Good casting there.

After all the rumors and official back and forth-ing on this over the years, though, I kinda feel like I won't believe anything 'till on-set pics start showing up.

Had a thought earlier today. I was just wondering whether they are going to include the meeting between Gandalf and Thorin in the film. It doesn't appear in the hobbit but is included in the appendices to the Lord of the Rings. It would be an interesting way to start the film, though, wouldn't it?

Freeman as Bilbo is a great bit of casting. Really like the idea of Bill Nighy as the voice for Smaug as well.

+1 for the Bill Nighy as Smaug likers... he has that rich plummy tone to his voice that you'd expect from a lounging lizard with a massive hoard.

Mmm. Yeah, Connery and Hurt have done Dragon voices - you know what, I reckon Donald Sutherland would be good as well. Bill Nighy, Donald Sutherland - can't decide.

And a -1 for Bill Nighy here! OK, so he's already been Saruman, but Christopher Lee (or maybe John Hurt) to voice Smaug for me.

As to Peter Jackson directing, that's great news. I love Guillermo del Toro's movies, but from bits I've read his vision of a Hobbit film was becoming more del Toro than Tolkien. I'd much rather GdT work on his own projects (which I'll eagerly look forward to) and PJ handle the Tolkien stuff.

Not sure about Christopher Lee - if PJ is expanding the hobbit slightly (as he said he'd like to), Saruman might be in it! (Not according to wiki) John Hurt does do a good 'dragon voice' in Merlin (even if the rest of the programme's not very good). Mind you, looking at the responses, one thing that everyone seems to agree upon is that the voice of Smaug needs to be a strong, distinctive voice with a lot of character, lol!

Interesting discussion. Here we're talking about our own Italian voices.

Sylvester McCoy (who was second choice for Bilbo in LOTR) has apparently been cast as a wizard in The Hobbit. No official word as to who, but it may be Radagast the Brown.

No official word as such, but he's let something slip. It fits; least he won't have to get rid of the ferrets! Hugo Weaving, Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen are back, Christopher Lee was going to be but has said he's not well enough to travel to NZ. Wonder if Cate Blanchett will be in it?

Also, had a look on Imdb, Leonard Nimoy is rumoured to be in it! Wonder if he'll voice Smaug? If he is in it, wonder if he'll re-release his record, lol!

Rob Kazinsky? Why? Now I need to remember which one of the dwarfs was the angry psycho one with no continuity, little plausibility, and little acting talent......

Oh wait, now I remember. It was none of them. Hopefuly this film will give him the opportunity to show some and versatility and talent. He'd be good for many of the arguemtns provided he sticks to his trademark simmering and huffing rather than shouting the odds. So maybe it wasn't such bad casting after all.

I now have the urge to reread the hobbit, just to work out how many are 'character' dwarves (acting and speaking roles) and how many are 'spear carriers' ("stand there and look interested")!

Apparantly the Unions have said they are going to stay out of it. The government has begun to put legislation in place to make a difference between employee actors and free-lance (I forgot the word they used) actors. WB was happy with the result. Even got the Prime Minister to argue for NZ's side of it.

Um... yay? I mean, I forget most of what the dwarves do in The Hobbit; but I can't help feeling that casting Nesbitt as 'a dwarf, one of 10' is a bit... underwhelming. Nesbitt is an incredible actor, and this seems to be a waste of talent.

Well, the Hobbit will be expanded somewhat as it's stretching to two movies so there's a good chance the individual Dwarves' roles will be expanded and deepened.
