Well, after a torrid journey spanning 3 days and all sorts of delays and inconveniences, I am finally in my bunk in Kenya! I have put up a new post on my blog (if you are interested) and will regularly update if anything interesting happens while I am here. I have seen my first wild Giraffe! Now it's just six weeks of desert bogeys to contend with !

Sing along, Inso! And, while you're at it, do the dance, get a mate to film it and post it on YouTube.

The Weebl Stuff Kenya song is wrong...there ARE tiger's in Kenya! The Squadron I am part of is one of a handful of 'Tiger Squadrons' (because of the tiger in the Squadron badge)...so while we are here...they got tigers!!!

Roughly where are you in Kenya?
I did the tourist thing, and spent some time in Kisumu many many years ago......
I seem to remember the area near Finch Hattons (?) was bandit country where we got the armed guard.....and broke down.....

I'm near Nanuki/Laikipiya (sorry if it is spelt wrong). I'm quite lucky as I am staying in a proper building with electricity and lighting. I have showers/toilets nearby and they are the proper plumbed in porcelain/tiled ones so I am well pleased with the set up...I had visions of a barn with no ameneties and solar showers.
It is a mix of very poor and relatively well off (for the local standards) people. It is all a new experience for me.

Africa's a wonderful continent on the whole. I lived there for a very long time! At first things come as a shock but give it a few months everything will seem normal and with any luck, you'll get to expand your mind. And don't go playing with those jungle girls now...

I was born there (Zambia) really want to go back someday as we came back to Uk when I was 2 - my Dad has bored us silly with slides for years - thankfully the bulb blew on the projector and he never got round to replacing it !

More stuff...
I have started shifts and work midday to midday. We work until the work is done in the evening, have a kip and are back after breakfast to finish off working at midday. the last couple of shifts have been beyond midnight...but at least it is 24 hours on/24 hours off...so we get a good opportunity to re-charge.
I went out to a local restaurant last night and sat by the fire, drinking 'Tuskers' beer and a cup of coffee whilst chatting...very nice.
Today, I am flying to a different site...on a Puma Helicopter...so I can work on one of the heli's there. I will be flying over the plains so may get an impromptu airborne safari...sounds good to me! (I'll have my camera with me...)

They said..."you'll only be gone for a day"...I got back today. Had a great flight...wasn't able to fix the aircraft (too broken for the kit available to fix )...was driven back today in a truck, cross country, through the wilds of Africa... I was a bit annoyed we couldn't fix the helicopter but the rest was a blast...tent, mozzie net, field kitchen, solar showers, limited facilities...it was just like camping! I even saw elephants from the window of a helicopter...but the pix may be rubbish due to the windows being perspex...we'll see.

There isn't a plan to fix the helicopter yet...It requires a lot of further investigation and testing before we can decide what bits need changing...and how to get them to where the thing has landed. Hey, Beefcake...if you have a hankering for my kind of job then I have a "come and play" link in my signature...the more the merrier . So...today I am much cleaner, have my laundry in to be washed, have brushed my boots to within an inch of their lives to remove all of the dust and will be going for lunch to a nearby troutery...presumably to eat some fish. I must say that the two 'Tusker' beers I had last night, went down a treat (as did the pork curry for tea...I am going to return to Blighty LOOKING like a curry at this rate!). I will be catching up with a little admin and maybe watching a bit of BFBS this morning while I wait for lunch...I have until tomorrow lunch time before I have to go back to work... !!! Ahhh...good times... EDIT: I have updated Inso's World with a couple of pix...see my sig for the link !

Ha, Not sure i'd fit the criteria. I briefly thought about joining the Navy after school but decided against it. Don't think I could handle the structure, I'm rather unorganised and messy (although my wife usually keeps me in line, don't tell her I said that)

I quite like the monkeys...but I must admit that the cheetah was awesome...not something I'd want to bring home though...just sitting with them lets you appreciate the immense power one of them has...it is quite exhillarating.

Crikey! What a day...rock climbing, abseiling down waterfalls, canyoning from heights of upto 40 foot...and at least 5 hours travelling in a packed mini-bus across some very challenging terrain...I am absolutely shattered...but in a good way. I can say for a fact that standing beside a waterfall, 40 foot up, looking down at the water and being asked to jump off is a lot scary...but the moment you take the plunge, the adrenaline rush is out of this world! Nearly 40 and I'm doing this sort of stuff? I must be mad! Mind you...I put one or two of the younger chaps to shame...I jumped when they couldn't...oh the humiliation (in a tongue in cheek way )... ...What an awesome day...and to think that I wasn't keen on adventurous training out here...BRING IT ON! !
