I'm not in Cornwall any more...I just made sure that I collected a nice pot full of sand before I left :).

The accent isn't too bad...not when you hail from Somerset ;)...

On to other things, I've had a change of heart about the tunnel fighters.  I will not be using the panda or 'cartoon' robot conversion as I don't think they fit in with the uniformity of the army...that means I need troops for the command squad so I've started converting them.  I still need a few more but here are the first five to join the commander:

From the left I have a pair of plasma rifles, a bodyguard and then a pair of heavy flame-throwers.  The squad will be finished off with three more bodyguard conversions, one of my comms robots and a shield robot.

With a change of direction comes a few different choices and I've finally managed to paint a small unit of these:

They are Vulkan Battlesuits from Warzone...with a few minor modifications to the head area.

Once my Grymn arrive from the good people at HF, I will have enough to finish the command squad.

I hope you like the new additions :).

A long coat is on my list, too.

Have you got a shot by shot of the construction of his left hand?  I'm struggling with that.

Good to see the Vulkans again.  They're fine for some.

The flamers are birlliant but the plasma aren't very visible.  Heve you got shots with them turned away from camera?

Sorry...no construction pix of the hand and no better shot of the plasma rifles I'm afraid :(.

There will be better pix of the five troops a bit later in the week when they are finished :).

The Vulkans look great. I also like the trenchcoat guy too. Not too keen on the flamers, the weapons look a little strange to me. Do they have some sort of fuel tank with them as well. It doesn't look like there isone from the pic. I can't wait to see your army in all it's glory. :D

These are just waiting for three more to join them and they will all get unit colours :) :

You can see the plasma rifles a bit better now.

I really like plasma rifles (my have to try doing one  :wry: )  not to sure about the flamers wouldn't a single large barrel be a better option than 2 small ones ? or maybe that's just me. Apart from that  love um

The Dante flamer is designed to act as a normal flamer but with the option of using a second nozzle for a 'flood' effect.  The use of the second nozzle would be considered as a one or two shot option due to there only being a standard sized fuel container on the body of the weapon itself.  This weapon (much like the plasma-rifle) is a prototype weapon under test and once the trials are complete work will progress to make both the nozzles permanent use and also to have a separate fuel tank to cope with the larger fuel use.

Hence...twin nozzles ;).

I have deliberately attached these weapons to the command squad because of their trial nature.

I haven't forgotten these...here is the start of another bunch of Clankers:

I fully expect these to completely dissolve...they are afflicted with a bit of lead-rot so I'm not too confident they will stay painted for long.  That said, once they start dissolving, I won't have to worry about battle damage ;).

Is the lead-rot a form of corrosion or is there something else going on?  Are newer alloys less susceptible to it or do we expect all our metal minis to suffer the same, slow death?

I think it is oxidisation of the lead content in older miniatures.  If you look at lead (like you find on lead roofing) then when it goes on it is bright and shiny but after time it goes a powdery grey...I think that is what happens to older miniatures.

I could be completely wrong though...

So, if it's oxidation, would sealing it with paint prevent that?

Of course, now we're working with minis of alloys not so fully leaded, right?

I know its hassle but if its only on the limbs why not try and replicate/reproduce them. Would cutting away the afflicted area help any?

I don't think I have ever seen a case of lead rot. Maybe the minis I have owned have all been produced post high lead content who knows.

They are covered in it. I scraped most of it off but it would have been impossible to remove it all.  I'm not too worried as I have another 16 of them so I won't run out of them :)...  They are also fairly easy to paint so if it does go to ore, I won't be too upset due to not having to put too much effort into them.

So, InSo, I'm wondering if it's literally oxidation or some other corrosion or degradation.  If it's truly the oxygen causing it, I would think sealing them in whatever way we can would stop it.  If it's the alloy itself breaking down, there's nothing to be done.

Before priming the next one, try scrubbing (perhaps even soaking) it in vinegar or alcohol to completely clean the surface and get a good bond for your paints.

How long does it take before you see changes in the surface?

I really have no idea...these are the first ones I have ever had with lead rot.  I am certainly no expert!

Luckily, I only have the three rotten ones; the rest are fine :).

Lead rot is caused by acetic acid (vinegar). It is in most modern materials that contain PVA; cardboard, foam, model paints and varnishes. The acetic acid acts as a catalyst so the reaction keeps on going. The end results in lead ii oxide ( white lead which is highly toxic). The best treatment is remove the affected parts and to store the figure with plenty of ventilation. If you store old lead figures in boxes and on opening them smell vinegar you have lead rot.

Thanks for the info G...I couldn't smell vinegar so maybe it was just really poor casting or even a bit of a calcium deposit from being damp at some point...who knows?

Well...they took paint okay:

I have started work on some transports...well, I've started gluing together individual-track-links for the drive system.  I've also managed to source some wheels...from a pound shop!  You'll never guess what they cost me ;)...

...no...just a pound ...

I have been trying for an hour to take a decent army pic and this is the best I can come up with...and even then it is a case of choosing which one you like the best out of a bad bunch :( :

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d161/Inso/Grymn/Grymn%20Tunnel%20Fighters/GTFArmy1.jpg

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d161/Inso/Grymn/Grymn%20Tunnel%20Fighters/GTFArmy2.jpg

They are links because they are big pix :).

Looking at them, you have the close combat stuff on the right (3 squads of 10), The infantry in the middle (3 squads of 10), the support elements on the left (2 squads of 3 Clankers and a squad of 3 scouts with Tooth-doggies) and the command squad across the front.

I hope you like the pic :) .

You know when it's lead rot. It eats whole sections of casting away, small joints are completely consumed causing figures to fall apart at the elbows and knees and large sections of detail are lost. Fortunately this only seems to happen to figures with a high lead content cast before the mid eighties not the more modern alloys. The best prevention is adequate ventilation.
