Problem Child Alice
« on: September 22, 2009, 09:03:41 PM »
Hello again.  I must have been painting a lot recently.  I have been known to leave around 5 years between starting and finishing a miniature.  Longer if you start the clock when I actually prime it.

Anyway.

Here I had a go at Problem Child Alice.  I wanted to try it out in black and white with a splash of colour.  I did in fact only use black and white and used tamiya clear red for the first time for the blood.  Came out okay I think.  This is also the first time I've tried wet blending - I wanted the highlight to shade transitions to be smooth.  Unfortunately, the shades of grey haven't come out too well in the photo.  Such is life I suppose.  To make it clear, I tried to paint her as if she was only lit from her upper right.

I also have to share my Aaargh! moment.  Gently but firmly easy her into her base, nearly, nearly - Oh no!

She straightened out okay though.  Oddly I think the shades of grey might be clearer in this photo.  Maybe not.

Thanks all.

One pin?  Do you know, I never thought of that.  I'll bear that in mind for next time.

Thanks.

I always remove the tab and drill up into the leg and pin using steel wire (often a paperclip) i can get much better accuracy and i dont have to putty over a slotta tab when i've glued a painted figure in.

Very lovely job!  The bent leg picture does give a good indication of the really nice shading you've managed here - congrats on a job well done.  I love the concept.  I think I need to pick up some of that tamiya clear red.... I've got some zombies to paint, and just red paint isn't coming across as nicely as your blood here.  Nice!

I agree with your comments, Martin. Also, anyone thinking about painting zombies HAS to have a pot of TCR in their arsenal. It really is essential!

Thanks, Vampi!  I'll have to go find myself some.  Would a local hobby shop have it on hand, or would I need to special order it online?  (My entire arsenal of paint for minis consists of about 15 Reaper paints & a couple pots of metallic... I do a lot of mixing.  Heh!  Needless to say, I know very little about different paints most people use.)

Martin, I buy my TCR from Modelzone in Newcastle, a hobby shop very close to where I live. So, yes, any model shop that stocks Tamiya products ought to sell it. I've never tried looking for it on-line, so I couldn't advise you on that one. Good luck in your search! Once you've got a pot you'll wonder how you managed without it!

Yeah, that clear red stuff seemed easy enough to get hold of.  I was surprised, what with a lot of specialist shops closing down.  I bought mine specifically for this figure.

There's a good blood and gore tutorial on bolter and chainsword I think it is.  If you can't find it I can post the link.

I found that when I did a white undercoated test piece with this (incredibly tacky) TCR, I had to stipple red and then red mixed with black ink (as the above tutorial suggests), but when I came to applying it to Alice it was mainly over black, so I didn't have to add the ink.  Too many commas there I think.

On the one tab front, I think I might have to try the wire pin idea - thanks for the tip.

Most hobby shops seem to do Tamiya clear, especially those who do RC cars, a number of Hobbycrafts do as well.
