Bahir's 52 Model Challenge
« on: September 18, 2009, 06:20:37 PM »
This challenge is a great idea!  Hopefully it will motivate me to plow through my lead/plastic pile  :D

Here are my first five.   The last of the my nid army I've been working on.  I tried something a little different on them.  After I highlighted the green portion I experimented by giving it a thraka green wash.  It left the green kinda splotchy looking and "washed away" most of my highlighting.  I was too tired to redo it, so I called them done.  Any tips on using that stuff? Anyway 5 down!

One More done!  However, I think I started this thread in the wrong area.  Could an Admin please move it to the correct one?

This is for my son's Marines, I know the U is upside down, but he likes it that way

I primed it black, base coated with Vallejo Model Color Dark Prussian Blue, then Dark Blue, and finally edge with Vallejo Game Color Magic Blue.

I was gonna work on my Space Rangers Next, but when that little face looks up at you and says, "Dad, can you help me paint my marines?" ... what can ya do.  Guess what I'm painting next?

Five of my son's marines done, he's working on the other five.

Next up... the Inspectors!  I plan on making them starship crew.  I kinda like this blue, so I'm thinking about doing their uniforms in a lighter version of it.  Anyone have tips on painting cloth?  As you can see from the space marines, I find it rather... challenging

Here's the start of my Ships Crew.  They are a quasi-military / mercenary group.

I have a horrible time painting cloth, and it looks kind of splotchy.  I probably need to try and find a tutorial some where.

Trying to paint with my limited collection of paints (and lack of know how) was also a challenge.  I bases with Vallejo Model Color (VMC) Dark Flesh, then washed with Ogryn Flesh then dry brushed with Dark Flesh.  I thought about mixing a bit of red and flesh for the lips, but I was afraid that it would wind up looking like lipstick on the guys.

The patches are just VMC Intermediate Green with no design.  I don't trust my free hand to put any type of logo there, but I thought maybe a diagonal line.  Would black be too much or should I use some type of "color" for contrast?

I LOVE the Fenris Bases.  I think all my minis will be on these from now on.

Anyway, here are the pictures.

C&C is welcome.

Black is fine. But you could also use a very dark green too.
If you're not confident with your freehand abilities, for these small pieces you can use a Micropen marker. It's kind of cheating, but in an acceptable way.

Anyway I'm liking them. Not everybody can paint to a high display level, and there's nothing wrong with that. As gaming pieces, they are perfect (in fact, I may copy the colour scheme for mine... unless I go in the opposite direction and use a bright colour...).

My first batch of Grymn are done!  These were really a lot of fun to paint.  The bases are Fenris bases and I just received another shipment of them, and I'll be basing the Grymn "Support vehicle" on one of the 40mm GW style SF bases from Fenris.

Thanks for all the folks who responded to my face painting thread.  Some of the faces turned out fair, some... I need more practice.  Anyway here are the pictures.  Same shot from two slightly different angles.

Show us some closer pics and I'm sure we can give you some tips.  They look pretty good from here, a touch more shading and another highlight and you are there IMO.

For the inspectors it almost looks like a drybrush, try using a similar method but use a wetter brush and go more slowly.  So you'd basecoat, wetbrush your first highlight then look at where the light falls and use that as a guide for your next highlight etc.

Those grymn are very, very nice. I'm also glad to see that the black/grey colour scheme worked well, too.

My only criticism is that the bases use a scheme very similar, so they somehow merge with them. Although that actually makes a lot of sense from the camouflage point of view, as gaming pieces it's usually better to help the mini itself pop more. For that, I'd suggest painting the bases with a more rusty look to them.

One of the Board Member of the (yet to be named) Science Mega-Corporation looks on as one of his toadies... er, assistants runs some diagnostics on what use to be a power-loader before the Ships Mechanic and the Grymn armory chief got a hold of it.

The two science guys are Moonfleet Overseer and Assistant from Antenociti's Workshop.  I may have to get a few more just to round out his entourage (As well as Hawk and Dove from Heresy to serve as his Body Guards).  They are based on Fenris SF DS style Bases.  I have discovered that I hate to paint white.  I already have a difficult time with cloth, but the white made it even more difficult.

The Walker thing is going to serve as power armory, dreadnought, terminator-y type thing.  I'm planing on using Sola (once I buy her) and doing a conversion inspired by Inso's awesome Sola conversion.  To paint the camo I painted the thing black then slapped on some Bluetac and then painted it gray.  Hover I put on a few too many coats of gray and when I peeled off the bluetac there were these little ridges like mold lines left by the gray paint.

The weapons are magnetized so I can swap out different weapons that may be fun to play with while this thing stomps around the ship ripping throught pirates, alien bugs and other n'er-do-wells.   It's on a Fenris 40mm SF GW style base.  I think after using both the DS and GW style, I favor the GW style.

I have another one of these AT-43 things and I plan on painting it industrial like and making some fork-lift or power-loader type arms (magnetized).  I tried once already and it was a complete disaster.  I tried making them out of Milliput and... well, lets not go there.

Every good starship needs spunky little maintenance robots that are getting sucked out the air lock, stuck in the turbo shaft, or locking themselves in the fusion reactor and, on the rare occasion, doing something completely unexpected that saves the day.

I tried to paint them a "construction yellow" type color that turned out completely horrible.  Then I tried a "warning orange" color that turned out red.  So in frustration I panted them metal and tried to paint some orange-ish stripes on them.

Thanks for the encouragement Inso!

Yes, they came as a 3 pack. Included was a little backpack for one of them that I didn't use.

Inso - Yes, they are from their Chronoscope Range.

Hawkins - The ships mechanic.  A rather tall lady with a very big wrench (also from Reapers Chonoscope range).

Here is the ships engineer and her "boys" as she calls them.  She doesn't carry a side arm but she does have a rather large wrench.  She's been known to chase the crew members, including the Grymn, out of her engine room with it.  It has been rumored she once tried to chase out the Captain, a former Naval Commander and Fleet Boxing champ, only to discover that the now pudgy Captain still has an incredible right hook.

This mini has a nice face, but I just couldn't get it right.  And when I tried to paint the pupil in, I kept getting the black dot in all the wrong places.  Any tips on how to do that?  I usually try to go straight in with the brush, should I be trying to go in from the side?

Anyway, on with the pictures, and C&C is welcome!

nice one, your metals are very good, fabric is improving too, perhaps try an intermediate highlight and/or try using a glaze to smooth the layers a touch. The gloves are a weak point here for me, for leather I use vermin brown with a brown wash then add a touch of bone to the base for the highlights.

Personally I try and go from the side with eyes but whatever works for you really...most of the eyes I've done lately have been looking sideways, much easier!

Thanks for the feedback gi6ers!

Is a glaze the same as a wash?

As for the gloves, I went back and forth trying to decide weather to do brown or black.  I liked the idea of Big leather gloves, but the black would match the boots and the belt, but I was unsure if that would be too much black on the model.

Thanks again for the painting tips!

I've got to agree with gigers. Your metals look really good. You've also done well with the orange, looks nice and bright. Her overalls are nice too.
What paint range are you using?
