Wave on a cliff nr2
« on: August 12, 2009, 11:34:21 AM »
Ok, another one from the "TriploZero" italian forum.
This time, thanks to the user xMANIGHTx    :notworthy:

1st step: cut a white transparent plastic bottle, with a wave shape, bend it in the form you like, accentuating the round shape. Put it on a cork to understand if it’s ok or not. The base rock must be cut in the cork, plus use putty and vinylic glue to simulate the erosion due to the salty, windy and raging sea in the front part of the cliff.

2nd step: prepare a “sea” colour you like, but a lot darker then the final effect. For example, use lucid blue glaze or a dark blue acrylic, for example an “enchanted blue” + “dark angel green” + a little dot of “bestial brown”.
Prepare a plastic glass, insert in it a lot of silicone and add some of the pre-mixed colour. Use very few drops of this colour, or you’ll totally lost the semi-transparent effect of the silicone. This is the reason why you have to prepare a mix darker than the final result, because it will be translucent when mixed with the silicone. Mix in the glass with force, using a tool. Spread a lot of this mix, doing just now the basic shape. Be quick because silicone becomes hard very swiftly (so prepare the colour before add silicone in the glass). After you’ve prepared the base, insert in the glass the plastic wave quickly, and put it as you like. Now, hurry up!, cover totally the plastic wave with a lot of the ilicone-colour you’ve mixed in the glass.

3rd step: transparent silicone. Shot transparent silicone directly with the silicone’s gun on the crests of the small waves created before, on the base of the main wave and in other places where you think the result will be fine, and spread/model it with your fingers or a small stick. You’ll obtain the crests posing the stick and leaving it rapidly.

4th step: prepare in small amount: silicone + skull white + pearl-effect pigments MICROPEARL (http://www.perlesandco.com/) or something like that, in these proportions: a very lot of silicone, a very small amount of white, a lot of pigment. Spread the white foam and model it as you like, using the little stick. When finished, prepare a second dose and repeat. Don’t act as in the second step, you have not to prepare the entire sea and big wave and now you must not hurry. For the foam, be quiet, prepare small amount of it and enjoy the time of modelling.
Spread the foam over the rock also, and simulate the effects you like more.

5th step: using the silicone’s gun again, link the passages between sea and foam, one with another.

6th step: use a lot of varnish for acrylic paint on the sea and, with some dots (don’t exaggerate!) over the waves, and, finally, a lot of it on the wet rock.

Erm!! I don't like it...to me it looks like one of those cheap & nasty pewter figures on a crystal rock from some hippy shop....

I admire the work that has gone into it, the mini is painted wonderfully...but the base swamps it (excuse the pun).

I think it would be a lot better if the rock was more rock-like - too much blue. That said, painting and the wave are excellent.

I like the idea, but I have to agree the base that the actual model is on is too....er....lumpy. It just doesn't represent anything natural: rock, earth...neither of those to my eyes.  Would have been nicer with a 'proper' cliff with the waves crashing against it.

The wave effect itself it quite nicely done, but if I'm really picky, maybe a little too large?   I also echo the comments about the painting quality on the model - which is especially nice indeed, but is let down a little by the base.  I'd be interested to see part #2 of how he created the 'wave' element, which is only shown as a plastic curve in the final picture of the sequence.

Hmm...

It looks like drybrushed paper mache with skin cream walloped on it to me.  :scratchhead:
