Just met an old friend cleaning the streets outside my house. He had a job! Thing is he's been a heavy drug addict for the past 25 years after an upbringing that was really one of the worst I've ever hear of. He was tortured by his mentally ill mother for all of his childhood, since infancy. Cigarette burns, beatings, locked in for days, constant belittling and abuse, stuff like that. He's one of the kindest persons I know but has been very very broken for most of his life.
And to see him sober, with a job, smiling, coherent and happy really really warmed my heart
