A bit related to the subject matter of the last few posts, but they have reminded me of the scene from Young Einstein, when he splits the beer atom with a hammer and chisel.

a simple ( its relying on my memory  therefore its simple) explination.
take your 5000 ton space ship ( yes you read the figure right, its that heavy so the bombs only give 10m/s accelleration per bomb)
set of the bomb under it, this pushes against a heavy spring loaded plate, this pushes up the entire ship, the spring system and the inertia of the top part mean that the crew dont feel the judder, as there setting off a bomb every half second or so. ( a standard car engine works by exploding petrol and transfering the shock into the wheels, as it happens quickly you dont feel it ).
the slight variations in explosive power are balance out by the suspension system.
For a better explanation try and track it down on watch again, or youtube, or possibly something like Wiki may have a section.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_(nuclear_propulsion)
what do you know it does ( link above).

its quite an interesting idea, you have one of these for getting off planet, switch to a project dadelus system to get further speed
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Daedalus
then use a bussard ramjet system for inter palnetry speeding
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bussard_ramjet
( can you tell its something im interested in??)

I saw that in the workshop. I wondered where it was from :scratchhead:

I was gutted but then he said "but i know mummy likes me to believe so we'll pretend just to make her happy."

awww he's sooooo cool.

just got back from wargamer in brum,  got some more HF stuff assorted figs and a armour cast ruined pick up for me and some bases and a griffon for my wife, and hopefuly Kev will follow through on the discusion we had, ( i may have just got to name a HF mini..ish)
the instructions on how to get there were good, the parking was rammed when we got there ( half 10, still lots of folks on the footie pitchs so not suprising), the sport hall was spacious with out feeling empty, and wile the lighting was a bit orange, it wasnt eye searingly bright or oppresivly gloomy, and there was a good mix of games and traders, and a bring and buy that i managaed to score anouther 1:48 chally tank and for the princly sum of £15 a total of 3 tactical squads of space marines. also some more nids for my wifes army from lesley bits box ( and a good chat) some victoriana stuff, a Mina Harker,  2 MIB, and a Quatermaine,  2 of the black pyramid investigator figs, and a copy of the anstible,  so all in all not a bad haul either.
So a quick hi to Sally as she was at tome today, and a Hi to any one else who went that we missed.

Sounds like you had a great time (I haven't been to a trade event since Salute 08...so I envy your good fortune).

I have had my painting bug re-kindled by a single miniature...not HF but a FoD company.

I needed a spark...and I think that I have finally found it !

...it's even better that it is at the start of my holidays :).

Its not like there is a shortage of Italians who would like to opportunity to do that, is it? :)  Is there anyone left he hasn't offended?  He makes Boris Johnson seem like an easy life for a PR guy!

Very bad, though - we should hit people - even if they would appear on the face of it to deserve a smack in the mouth.
