Lock up yer Deamonettes - The Grey Knights are here!
« on: March 11, 2009, 10:33:23 AM »
Well, the FW landraider finally landed a few days ago so I cracked on and made a start on the Army, a few elements were already in place of course such as the Titan and Dreadnought but I have a few troops and heroes to add. I have initially planned this as a small support force for the Crimson Ultrawings

As I said I have initially planned this as a small support force, saying that the Crimsons started life as a 'small skirmish force' so who knows where it may end up <rolls eyes>

Anyhow, pics below, raider just finished, DN and Titan done a while back of course but will stick em all here to remain coherent, looking forward to an army shot when its all done!

Bagged the DN second hand from ebay, saved a few pennies on the RRP and it was already assembled and undercoated to boot....bonus!

Hehe, sorry Weareblind, I am really trying honest. I wish I could find a much cheaper hobby like hard drugs, expensive wine, fine cuban cigars and high class escort girls instead of this, burning a feckin hole in my pocket I tell ya! no more after the GK's, NO MORE!

Btw, digital pics dont really do things justice, the colours are much richer in natural light, quick pic here but once I get the troops done will get some nice army shots...

troops on the way, will update when they are done, hopefully wont go overboard and will stick to the 5 GK terms, 10 GK's and a couple of character figs, please slap me if I start to get carried away.

Come on Boris, I'm just killing time 'till that dragon is finished, pull yer blinking finger out, its costing me m8  :whip:

Mine do!

Added a few troops and specials to the army, still a pain setting the cam up to show the silver at its best so some table shots will have to do for now!

More pics over at Grey Knights page

Few below of the Grey Knights, Captain Stern and the FW Inquisitor Lord Hector Rex and his little buddies

I kept the blue-ish blades to tie in with the Crimsons who they will be supporting, I prefer the weapons to stand out a bit from the armour anyhow, just felt there was too much shinyness already there without painting the blades silver too, heck if I'm honest I just like the colour....its pretty!

Used the blast effects but blue'd them out to represent the pysonic ammo the GK's prefer to use, it applies to the flamer ammo too according to the fluff in the book, or the holy water pistol if you prefer

technically no, because they're a marine chapter and all titans belong to the adeptus mechanicus, but who cares it's a brilliant model  :applause:

The Grey Knights AREN'T a marine chapter.  They are the Militant wing of the Ordo Malleus.

Technically they could have whatever they want at their disposal because the Inquisition would just sanction the manufacture of whatever they thought they needed for the protection of mankind...if anyone needs convincing, what about the Black Ships?

I agree that they may be equipped, armed and arranged like a Space-Marine chapter...but the number, overall control and organisation is completely different.

I could see a particularly zealous Ordo Malleus Inquisitor having a Grey Knight Titan (or three) being constructed...maybe a particularly sought after artifact is lying on a Daemon World and a Titan is the only conceivable way of  launching the power to remove it?

I'm a great believer in looking at ways to include things in games, rather than looking at ways to exclude them.

For EVERY idea for a unit, there is a way to include it in a game.

Examples...

Eldar riding marine bikes.  A Marine scouting party stumbles on a lost Exodite party that is on the brink of starvation.  A fierce firefight breaks out and the marines are all killed.  The surviving Exodites steal the bikes to make their break for a Webway gate on the other side of the planet.  They make it, get back to their homeworld, treat the bikes as 'lucky charms', paint them in their own colours and use them in battle from then on.

Imperial Commander using Ork vehicle for transport.  A particularly tough, front-line Colonel who fought on Armageddon, realises the psychological effect of driving an Ork vehicle...so he does!

...etc...

So...do Grey Knights get Titans?...Yes...letter of the law?...possibly no...it all depends on how imaginative you feel.

Inquisition commandeer what they like so a Titan could be used.  Whether or not they would psych it up or not is a different matter but it could be a case of 'the needs must'.
The light at the end of the tunnel is just someone with a torch, locking the gate.

and of corse using the vehicle design rules its easy to stat and sort, its a heavy support choice for the army, et viola. Sorted.
and as BulldogUK went to the trouble of building it, its more that a little unsporting,  not to allow its use. you dont need to use it often, but in HUGHE Games it would make an amazing center peice. ( hell with some of BulldogUK`s work its realy only a bookend anyway... face it how meny people are going to face his tiatan battle group and complain abought this)
a happy dauber

Quick update as I haven't had time to take any decent pics as yet.

Terms and additional GK troops done, hopefully that's it for this force. I am hoping I aint gonna get sucked into it like the Crimsons, however I am liking the look of the Lord/retinue packs.....uh oh...

Will get some army shots with the titan next week hopefully  ;)

Started to expand the GK's a little. Started with some Asassins, love these figs, remind me of the old Rogue trader days... Got some inquis stormtroopers and Coteaz and his buddies incoming too

Magical painting here - absolutely superb. I've seen a lot of these models before (I think maybe on other forums?) but the impact of them is not diminished. Stunning. In fact, so stunning I was unable to spell "diminished" for a while there.

As for the "fluff" re. Titans; I agree - the Grey Knights are a group of Marines who form part of the official militant wing of the Ordo Malleus. They are called a "Chapter" but are not strictly speaking part of the Adeptus Astartes (they are part of the Inquisition if anything). I disagree that an Inquisitor would have Titans "built" - it would take too long. But, I can see an Inquisitor ten thousand years ago requisitioning a whole Titan legion for his personal use for a campaign (look, if I was an Inquisitor, I would be requisitioning all sorts of cool stuff; "Captain! That beer you have there - looks good! I am requisitioning one for His Imperial Divinity The Emperor's Inquisition! And the pie? Also necessary for the continued fight against the evil xenos, mutant and heretic. Interrogator! Bring me the holy spork!")

Anyway; Inquisitor requisitions a Titan Legion, and over the centuries it becomes, pretty much, just a defacto part of the Inquisition. Sure, OFFICIALLY it is Adeptus Mechanicus ... but the contract is renewed so many times it becomes meaningless. The Titans are repaired and refitted, and are built to look more and more "Inquisitorial". I would personally argue for massive, black, baroque cathedrals rather than silver Knights . . . but when I see G.L.O.R.I.A. ("Gladius Legionam Ordinatus Ratio Imperialis Adamante" - which, of course, means nothing but looks about as realistic and cool as the rest of the cod Latin in 40K)

When I see Gloria . . . well, my fluff-appearance justification kinda withers, really :)
