Done a bit of test fitting of parts - will have to wait until next week when I've got some time to concentrate on it properly ...... wouldn't want to mess it up !

Upside to that: the delay means I'm casting more bits, so when the new mould's done there'll be more than 3 kits going out for the next batch....
Too many ideas....way too little time.

I have now officially shed blood on the thing
Was cleaning up some flash and sliipped with a new surgical scapel blade in the knife leaving an inch long cut across my knuckle and index finger gone pretty deep as well as I had a bit of pressure behind it - blood everywhere  :faint:
Patched myself up as best I could but I think it may need a couple of stitches - unfortunately have to be at work in half an hour..........

Havent been well over the weekend and spent most of it in bed - on the bright side not moving my finger around has made it knit together quite quickly and I have finished assembling the dragon - minus claws and horns - may even think about paint schemes this week..........

45 out of 225, once the current batch sitting around the place is fully packed. There's an 'arms' issue at the moment that I'm hoping to resolve shortly. So 20%.

Waiting for the Deep Tin to arrive, the people tooling it somewhat frustratingly closed down for their annual holidays for the last two weeks. Then I can get metal castings of the bigger pieces and see if I can get Ed Fortae to do some casting for me at last.

Sounds good to me Andy :D I think you're doing a cracking job under difficult circumstances.

I really hope the new tin gets things moving at a better pace for you.

Keep going!!!   :notworthy:

Well at least it is moving, albeit slowly, but it is moving, which is a good thing.  :notworthy:

Question, what parts are you wanting to produce in metal? I thought it was a completely resin Dragon, or was I mistaken?

Well, depending on if I can actually get Ed at Trollforged to agree to cast some bits for me or not , it may be that the hands will be in metal. The end of the tail is in metal, and the claws are in metal. Want as little metal as possible in there really, for weight and cost issues, but some things, like the hands, are just proving to be very difficult to get 100% quality castings of as is, so I've cut the hands off and done metal versions of them which can then be spun up (with claws in place) and used to make either moulds for metal or for Ed's spincast plastic process. Which is what the other metal bits are going to be for - solid master castings that can't be broken by the moulding process and can be replaced if lost mid-flight over the atlantic if they end do end up going to the USA.

There a few bits that won't fit into the mould tin I'm buying (I'd need to buy a new mould press as mine doesn't open wide enough to accommodate mould tins for moulds thicker than 2.5 inches) such as the rock and the ends of the wings (going to try those, but have my doubts) but in theory one could produce a solid metal dragon given time and enough funds for the hideously expensive silicon moulds you initially need. The cost of it would be phenomenal in metal, though!

Yes, just a bit. Personally I wouldn't want somethign like this in metal. I dont think there would be a mini shelf in the land that would hold this beast.  :lmao:

20% is good, however I'd be concerned if your plan going forward is to depend on Ed from Trollforged to do something for you quickly... it hasn't worked out thus far, and he always has a huge backlog / demand for new molds... people have been waiting years! His process looks awesome, though.

I know I've been a Debbie Downer, but I actually know of someone who does excellent resin casts- Wehrkind over on Dakka Dakka. He is casting up a lot of items for the On The Lamb / Brushfire range in resin, that they used to have made in metal. So, if Ed is / continues to be unavailable, it might be worth reaching out to him. He also did 100 complete models for me personally in just a few months.

If you want to get in touch with him, I can PM you his email, or you can shoot him a message on Dakka:

An example of his work (Edit: Whoa, this came out really big... feel free to edit this post if necessary):

Which is this model along with alternate heads:

Anyway, hopefully that is helpful. I can personally attest to how good and prolific he is, as can the folks at On The Lamb / Brushfire.

Ed isn't the only plan. He's been part of the plan since he first sent me a sample of his plastic a year or so back. He's the 'Ultimate Wish' plan (Well penultimate, ultimate would be learning what the process is that he uses so I could do it myself) But the main plan is to cast as much of the 'little' bits (arms etc) myself so that Ian isn't casting 19 individual moulds for each dragon he's making at the moment. If we can get Ed to do some of it, it would solve the queue inside a month or two, and the plastic resin hybrid material he produces is very, very good stuff, far better than resin. Awesome for the claws and stuff.

Mini-news - the arms and hands are now separate, for the time being, with the hands being cast in metal. All those scaly fingers eat the silicon moulds and cause nightmares in casting terms, trying to get resin to fully fill the tiny details. So metal for now.

I should be able to get enough Dragons out of this batch to take us to about #47, but annoyingly, my box supplier has been bought out and seems to have stopped listing the box I used for Dragons on their website. About to head off to Davpack, which is local, and wave a box in their faces to see what they can come up with as an alternative for the same sort of price.

Have you tried Charapak? Also relatively local (Alfreton-ish), I used to get boxes from them back in another life.
