I'm Looking for some good recommendations for steam punk - any ideas? its not a genre i know but i think it has potential.
Start with "The Difference Engine" by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling. Can't get better steampunk than that IMO

But as it has an independed recommendation from you keep i shall give it a go... isn't this the book that is recognised to be the "first" in the genre? a bit like Neuromancer was the "first" in the cyberpunk genre?

I can see why that might make you hesitate. I believe it is the first in the genre to hit the big time, effectively defining the genre. But there are a whole load of similar novels and short stories, dating back into the 19th century that have been retroactively put into Steampunk.
Its on the edge of the steampunk/alternate history genres, but I'd also recommend the collection of short stories assembed by Michael Morcock entitled "England Invaded", if you can find a copy (
