Nice work Uncle Phil :) I really like his albinoness, too.

And the base?

That is how Uncle Phil does all his bases - no point even mentioning them, he's made up his mind :D

I can imagine you sitting on the living room floor playing and croaking 'exterminate'

Our sofa says "Exterminate" on a regular basis - ever since the kids lost a small device from a dalek easter egg somewhere down the back of it :)

Its not like there is a shortage of Italians who would like to opportunity to do that, is it? :)  Is there anyone left he hasn't offended?  He makes Boris Johnson seem like an easy life for a PR guy!

Very bad, though - we should hit people - even if they would appear on the face of it to deserve a smack in the mouth.

I'm Looking for some good recommendations for steam punk - any ideas? its not a genre i know but i think it has potential.
Start with "The Difference Engine" by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling.  Can't get better steampunk than that IMO :)
Thanks - I think thats been recommended to me before, but by a woman who also like jackie collins so it didn't make its way onto my xmas list. But as it has an independed recommendation from you keep i shall give it a go... isn't this the book that is recognised to be the "first" in the genre? a bit like Neuromancer was the "first" in the cyberpunk genre?
[/quote]

I can see why that might make you hesitate.  I believe it is the first in the genre to hit the big time, effectively defining the genre.  But there are a whole load of similar novels and short stories, dating back into the 19th century that have been retroactively put into Steampunk.

Its on the edge of the steampunk/alternate history genres, but I'd also recommend the collection of short stories assembed by Michael Morcock entitled "England Invaded", if you can find a copy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England_Invaded).
