Cool Toys / 3D Printing
« on: March 30, 2013, 07:55:37 AM »
This may go in this category?

Gadget Show (UK Ch5) had a small article on 3D printing, as links

I know its not new cutting edge technology now, but of interest?

The Computer Zone / IObits Advanced SystemCare with Antivirus 2013
« on: July 12, 2012, 02:26:59 PM »
Does anyone know if IObits Advanced SystemCare with Antivirus 2013 is any good. Is it worth $12.99 for 3 PC’s (instead of $49.99) as an upgrade on my existing IObits Advanced SystemCare?

I have already got installed on an XP tower and an XP laptop the IObits Advanced SystemCare v5.3.0 (licenced paid for version), running with Microsoft’s Security Essentials (free) for virus protection. The IObits seems to do its job!

I posted this on MH forum, and it was suggested that the FOD may be able to help identify this miniature, so, fingers crossed

Edited, smaller picture

The Computer Zone / Slow Broadband help required
« on: March 21, 2011, 08:03:38 PM »
Another call for help/advise

I have an Intel Core 2 Duo based Acer PC tower, with XP Prof SP3 and Firefox 3.6.15 (also IE8 for windows updates)

I run Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus/firewall/ad-blocker and AdAware v9.0.2 (free cut-down version) for Anti-Spyware (and Firefox/IE8 clean sweeping) real time protection, and use Windows Defender weekly.

Up until recently, the cable broadband speed was about 9Mb. The connection is direct cable (Ethernet) from cable modem to tower (not wireless). Now it is about 4Mb. Have tried restore, cleans, reboots, modem reboots, etc... and assumed it was the provider (as they had issues at same time). But, connected my works laptop to the cable modem, and speed is still about 9Mb.

I can recall having to close Firefox via task manager because of a pop-up preventing close.

Would it be advisable to install an Ethernet Network Card, instead of using the onboard port?

Have tried monitoring traffic via task manager, no obvious CPU usage or Internet traffic

What do I do next?

General Ranting / Optivisor - again
« on: February 25, 2011, 08:32:29 AM »
I have just read most of this thread......

http://forum-of-doom.com/index.php?topic=7368.0

I have a cheap dual flip set (proberably the EXPO 738-40 2.2x A lense, 3.3x A+B lenses http://expotools.com/store/pages/products/index/pdf/p34.pdf ) which is OK, seems to be fuzzy focus when both lenses used and the head band is very simple (cheap) and awkward

Any thoughts, updates, comments.

The Spyglass Melting Pot / Female Commissar would be nice!
« on: January 09, 2011, 10:36:16 AM »
I would like to suggest a 28mm female ‘generic’ lieutenant or commissar. Nice as a collectors/painters miniature, could be used for other manufacturers army’s (warmachine, GW IG, SB, etc…)

I, for some bizarre reason, have recently got some IG Praetorians, and I am thinking of adding either a female commissar or Lieutenant to the HQ

I have the Reaper 50001 Sasha DuBois – time chaser, which I have made minor alterations with a greenstuff shirt (bare belly did not seem to go with Praetorians!)

May get another and do a head swap or hat swap!

The LE GW female commissar reaches ridiculous prices on eBay, for what is not a very impressive miniature!

Can not think of any other suitable miniatures

But a Steve Buddle sculpt would be great!!!

General Ranting / Triple Helix - Westbury, Wiltshire Wargames Venue
« on: June 04, 2010, 05:53:53 PM »
A new wargames centre / shop in Westbury, Wiltshire

I have visited them, nice and friendly.

On second visit, they gave my 11 year old lad an introductory game of WH40k, with a 1,500 point army (created from my lads chaos renegade army, bought from the FOD's Geckilian - they were well impressed with the painting, thanks Geckilian). Took over three hours; creating the army, going through the rules and codex, and then battling. Result was a draw, and a very happy lad!  :boing:

General Ranting / Torbay 2009 Show
« on: May 13, 2009, 11:19:19 AM »
Who is going to the Torbay 2009 show?

I know it is mostly military models, but there are some nice displays of painted figures, good selection of trade stands, and most probably those masters of the dry-brushing art - The Jolly Bodgers

And it is at the top of Torquay town, so a nice stroll though the shops and coffee shops down to the marina and beach!

General Ranting / Anti-virus
« on: March 20, 2009, 07:56:07 PM »
After my internet browser thread, which kind of favoured Firefox, my next question is.... what anti-virus/firewall/anti-spam/anti-evil-people-on-the-net software do the FODders use, why and any comments, again just out of curiosity

My new computer came with McAfee, which I quickly removed. I installed Norton 360 as it seemed a good deal at time. My old computer had AVG full version, with Windows Defender and Adaware

Some IT friends say that Norton slows the computer down (which I kind of agree with), and AVG free version, with defender and adaware should be enough. Also, Norton 360 does not have some of the tools that defender has (i.e. seeing which software starts-up, is running and can be inhibited (i.e. stop software searching for updates)

Any thoughts?

General Ranting / Internet Browsers
« on: March 12, 2009, 02:17:19 PM »
Out of interest, what Internet Browsers do the FODders use, and why and are there any issues!

I have used up to now Microsoft's Internet Explorer (now v7), but I have just downloaded Firefox 3, as it is one that the GW site recommends, and it does appear to be faster on the GW site

Any views?

General Ranting / The Jolly Bodger’s Drybrush Conspiracy
« on: December 07, 2008, 08:52:41 AM »
A work colleague was attending the recent Bath model show, and whilst stood at the Jolly Bodgers stand overheard a visitor say to the Jolly Bodgers “These are nice models, do you drybrush them?”   :jawdrop:

The answer was a swift “No, they are painted using thinned paints, building up layers and blending “   :grrr:

We think they protest too much, obviously the drybrushing truth has been revealed! It must all be the clever use of drybushing and washes, camera angles and ‘photshop’ manipulation!

All the joking aside, my friend (who paints and collects 54mm Napoleonic to WWI figures) said that the Jolly Bodgers stand was one of the best, with exquisitely painted very minute figures, especially liked the Scooby-Doo diorama  :notworthy:   :applause:

I am sorry I could not make it to the Bath show this year, hope to see the Jolly Bodgers at The Torbay 2009 show.
