This sculpting malarkey aint easy... especially small details... *hats off to Kev and Andy*

However, I have been working on an entry for the HF competition. I am a little apprehensive of posting it as I know the detail is a little bit bulky/blobby, but I am sure it doesn't look quite this bad in real life... ;)

She still needs some hair, and a lot of sharpening up, but that's my hat in the ring...

The Colouring-in Room / WIP: Boris III
« on: May 21, 2012, 11:54:56 AM »
Hey guys

Here is another WIP of Boris Mk III (thought I'd better stop hijacking Andy's announcement thread)

The flesh is pretty much done, and the metals are getting there, but the boots and bracers are early days yet ;)

Here he is:

I hope you like him :D

Hasslefree Babble / Oakley and Cobra
« on: November 07, 2011, 01:41:51 PM »
Just a quicky, a mate just called up asking a question about HF, and wanting to know where he could buy Oakley (he saw it somewhere online). I was looking for him on the HF store and couldn't find him - does anyone know which section he should be in?

Hasslefree / Vadim the Orc
« on: August 07, 2011, 01:30:43 PM »
Been meaning to paint this guy for years, and with the WAMP Hasslefree comp, I thought it was the perfect opportunity. He was a lot of fun, and I tried something new with the flesh tones and put a lot of brown and orange into the shadows, rather than the typical green.

I wanted to give him bronze and steel armour, and am quite pleased with the way it turned out. However, there were moments when the armour was definitely too dark in comparison with the skin so I had to progressively darken the flesh to jar less with the armour... but that killed the contrast in the flesh which I had to re-highlight etc etc, so I went round and round adjusting stuff. Too many times in all probability...

But here he is:

I like orcs :D

Just thought I'd post up here in case any of you are based in the SW. This was a new show which started last year, but was actually quite good. A great vibe and a real mix of genres made for an eclectic and eye opening day.

Worth a visit if you get the chance, it is at Newton Abbot Race Course just south of Exeter, and has parking and food on site. Toosh and I will have a stand there as the 'Jolly Bodgers' and a number of WAMP members will also have a stand.

Hopefully we'll see you there!

Hasslefree / Wolf (b) from Salute
« on: April 17, 2011, 11:25:58 PM »
Hello ladies and gents!

Well, I managed to get Wolf finished in time for Salute, and popped him into the painting comp. Beautiful model to paint, typically Hasslefree in that it pretty much painted itself once I got started. Few firsts for me... fully sculpted base and painted chest hairs :P and then NMM to try and keep my hand in...

here he is:

Was a crazy day at Salute yesterday - one of the highlights of my modelling career! I managed to score best in show with HF's Wolf(b)! Here's a piccy of me collecting my prize :P

Thanks for looking :)

The Colouring-in Room / Argh.... what base?
« on: February 21, 2011, 09:57:56 PM »
Hey guys

been working on another Hasslefree miniature, but I have come to a bit of an impasse. I have painted Wolf, and was working on a base specifically for him, and although I really like what I have done, I am now unsure whether it is right for him.    :scratchhead:

Anyway, here is WOlf (what a superb model by the way!). After seeing how comparatively bland my stuff looked under the lights at Euro Militaire, I went for a high contrast style to really try and make the mini 'pop'. I am pretty pleased with it as it is much more like my old style of painting, but over time, in a bid to get everything much smoother, I had lost a lot of the contrast that I once loved. I have also given a go at the more 'in yer face' NMM style which seems to be popular these days - mainly to try and push myself... I always have to try new stuff

Thats my boy, but here is the base I created. Firstly the base early on with wolf on it:

but this is the base now:

Its meant to be a jungle ruin and I envisage it with a lot of foliage and creepers etc. the large head is meant to be part of a huge statue and will be covered in moss and other greenery. Do you think it will work with Wolf? If you have any ideas for a base, I would be most grateful - I am having a bit of a brain fart :P

Thanks in advance

General Ranting / South Devon Model Extravaganza 22nd May
« on: May 01, 2010, 12:38:07 PM »
There is a new model show this year in South Devon - Newton Abbot to be exact. Spoke with the organisers just recently and they seem to be pretty happy with the way it has been received. Traditionally you have model shows and wargames shows but they are trying to pull together the multitude facets of our hobby and have them represented in the one place.

So there should be wargamers, historical miniature painters, tread-heads and rivet counters as well as radio controlled aircraft and model trains. There should also be people like Tracy and I sat there behind our 'Jolly Bodgers' stand to chat about our models ;) Sounds like an interesting show and it would be great to support them on their first year.

Its at the Newton Abbot Racecourse 10am opening on the 22nd May - anyone fancy the trip down to say hello (or trip 'up' for you Cornish fellows and SteveB)? Parking is free, £3 entry for adults (£1 for kids) and as a rough distance gauge its just South of Exeter. From the info I've been sent:

Quote
"The venue is accessible from the East from Exeter via M5 towards Plymouth then A-38 onto A-380 sign posted for Torbay, follow the Racecourse Brown signs as you approach Newton Abbot. Enter the venue via the entry just past the roundabout for Tesco’s

From the west A38 towards Exeter then A-382 towards Newton Abbot As you enter Newton Abbot follow the Brown Race course signs Enter the Venue via the enty just before the Tesco’s roundabout."

Hasslefree / That's Mr Roban to you...
« on: February 28, 2010, 07:07:43 PM »
Here is my long overdue Twilight Roban

I tried to give him a certain amount of gritty realism and put him on a dusty inhospitable environment, but this has made him rather difficult to photograph :P He was really enjoyable to paint, and I already have a couple more Delgon models on the shelf ready for a similar treatment.

I hope you like him

Ack! 5 to 12....

This is my DoD for 2009 - a trenchcoated gang break into a military installation to destroy the alien weapon that has been discovered

This has been ridiculously difficult to photograph... almost too 3d... but these are the best I could get! I will keep trying but it is so close to midnight that I had to post what I had!

I hope you like it!

I need a fix...

Tread plate... I need it for my DoD :P but Antenociti's are away 'till the end of the month and I am at a point with my diorama that this will be VERY useful. :lalala:

I'm in the UK - does anyone know where I could pick some up online pretty quickly?  :boing:

Cheers guys :)

Anyhow, here are the pics of my Stalks (which was painted as a commission for someone who I will let make themselves known ;))

Painting him makes me excited by the Twilight stuff that are due at Salute ;)

Hasslefree / Haela, my Femme Fatale 3 entry
« on: March 07, 2008, 01:38:47 PM »
I painted a Haela back in January for the Wyrd painting competition 'Femme Fatale', but couldnt show anyone due to the competition rules... The painters have been named and the results are in now so I can share the pics with you!

I wanted to paint a very natural piece and kept to muted tones of browns and greys, and put her in a wind swept snow-covered scene. The tree is made from a bundle of wire twisted and split and covered in a strange substance called 'Squadron Green' for texture.

You can find the general consensus and some critique of the mini on wyrd here

As for results, I managed to place first in my category...! WOOT!

There are more pics available if you want 'em

The Colouring-in Room / Hellboy AKA HB AKA Harby
« on: February 28, 2008, 09:31:28 PM »
I Lurve the Harby mini :boing:

I finally got around to doing a conversion I have been looking forward to for a good while now... so here goes, some WIPs

Firstly, a couple of pics of the model with my procreate additions. Initially I just added the horn stumps, sprayed it, muffed up the flesh tones and then stripped bits and started again... When I started fresh, I decided to make more of the conversion and add a few more hellboy-ish themes such as the holster, rosary and a bare chest  Oh, and of course the tail!

Here he is again undercoated with the first few layers of red on his flesh. You can also see how I sculpted the tail and how the coat was modified.

A bit more colour on the coat and the trousers, and the flesh is about done at this point

Very nearly finished:

He is done now, but I can't seem to get him matte... as soon as I do I'll post the final pics in the gallery ;)

Any critique is welcome! Especially from any Hellboy buffs... i couldnt work out if he should have yellow eyes with or without a pupil...

Hasslefree / Terminator 2: T1000...
« on: December 29, 2007, 10:51:26 PM »

This is a conversion of 'Officer Nick'. The original miniature had a shotgun in one hand and a pistol in the other and strongly resembles Simon Pegg's character from 'Hot Fuzz'. I have removed the lower arms and given him crowbar style appendages, and also put a pool of 'mercury' entering his foot.

This image shows the broken sign and also the small puddle of mercury being re-absorbed into the T1000. I went for a lightning bolt sign as a representation of the ball of lighting that appears when the terminators time travel (even though I am not sure if US signs come in red and white triangles... call it artistic license  :P).

More pics:

I'd best go post this in the superhero thread... :D

Well, I just got my email in on time, but here are some pics for you :)

This is the first proper diorama I've done, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! And as with Toosh, its the most models I've painted in a short period of time for ages (apart from some speed-painted Mid-Nor). I am really pleased with the result... It was a bugger to photograph though, and I just realised you cant see boris's stubble :(

So I bring you, A Ritual Interrupted

(no, not THAT Ritual...!)

Other pics:
Elf
Dwarf
Waterfall
Slug
Slug 2

I want to try and get some more realistic images... still struggling with the camera...

I hope you like it!

Questions and Answers / Recommend an airbrush
« on: September 07, 2007, 12:04:14 PM »
Hey guys!

A friend of mine has just handed me his airbrush compressor as he knackered his airbrush  and isn't going to get a new one... can anyone suggest a beginners dual action airbrush for me?

the compressor is a Revell Gamma with a 2.6 bar output (if that makes a difference)

As for price... not sure really... not too much :P

The Colouring-in Room / Avicenna - DoD?
« on: August 05, 2007, 10:22:52 PM »
Hey guys...

I've been a-working on my diorama of doom now, and its a bit of an ambitious task I have set myself ;) Seeing as everyone else seems to be posting WIPs I thought I should too. All of my models are prepped and primed bar 1, and the first few coats of paint have gone on the first miniature - Kaylee by Hasslefree.

Here she is after a days work...

I am really excited about this 'little' scene and hope I havent bitten off more than I can chew with the number of participants! Only time will tell!

Take care!
