Ideas for New Heresy Models / Re: Kickstarter?
« on: February 03, 2013, 03:13:49 PM »
As a paying punter without vast wadges of spare cash to fling about, I've not been strongly impressed by the KS concept generally, largely due to the lack of quality-control. That said, I know Heresy, like the extant castings, and along with quite a few others who've commented here already, wish there'd been more new models in the "unique, curious and oddly intriguing" line in recent times - while appreciating what the problems have been preventing this. So, I'd be more likely to support a Heresy KS than most others (note this is not a pledge to do so sight-unseen, however!).

In terms of the voting question, fantasy has the edge for me too. From a broader marketing perspective, many humanoid fantasy figures will work equally well in other settings, but too many humanoid science-fiction figures couldn't usefully make the return transition.

Having been gaming for many (many...) years now, rules are pretty much rules, and can always be tinkered with if they need tweaking, so I've long tended to buy new games only where there're some interesting background ideas and/or figures/scenery that goes with the set. I'd guess that may make me atypical, however!

On the bench / Re: Arkham Avenue - The Griffin House
« on: November 23, 2012, 01:11:01 PM »
Thanks for the size and floorplanability info. Fingers crossed on the pricing...

On the fixtures & fittings front, fireplace is good as long as it's not too much the standard hole-in-the-wall-with-basic-surround model, but I was actually thinking more on the lines of moulded stuff like sinks, bath and toilet which are the devil to scratchbuild (well they are with my modelling "skills" anyway). Or maybe even an imposing study desk and padded chair.

I know you can find some of these bits in 28mm-ish scale by hunting around, as long as you're not too bothered about period styles, but it might be nice to have a one-stop Fenris selection of add-on expansion packs for those of us who might want to fit the interior out a little more elaborately. Or indeed interiors, if more such buildings may be to come.

Bloody fantastic, but I am scared what the price will be. :blub:
That is extremely cool - should I apply for a bank loan now....... ?

There was a rash comment in a Facebook reply on Nov 11 that the price range with all the trimmings might be around £30 to £40, but hadn't been fixed. I'm guessing from the lack of comment on the point by Geronimo that that's still the case, given this is WIP, after all.

Couple of questions. What's the approximate footprint for the complete building (all three dimensions, preferably)? Will each building level be removable once complete, to work as a stand-alone model (i.e. like a 3D floorplan)?

Also, are there plans for a basement cellar level, as there are half-moon windows just asking to be barred to stop whatever's lurking down there getting out?

Some interesting idea drawings for future potential buildings in a similar vein on the Facebook page I noticed.

Are there plans for a Fenris furniture & fittings range to fully kit out the inside too?

Announcements and News / Re: Upgrading and Changing Servers.
« on: November 12, 2012, 11:32:02 AM »
All seems fine to me now, a couple of hours on from the previous posting here. Not quite a "Cloud 9" (server), but no different to the site's working mid-afternoon yesterday before the changeover. Somebody's aim with the HTML wrench has improved in the interim, perhaps...

Suggestions (HF) / Re: Suggestions via email
« on: November 01, 2012, 04:46:25 PM »
Thought it would be worth resurrecting this old topic as I see Crooked Dice have their new "Misty, Zombie Hunter" schoolgirl with jolly hockey stick mini out today, who fits perfectly with this general concept. From the CD webnotes:

Misty rules the roost at St Searle’s School for Young Girls and no has intention of any ‘scabby little dead man’ ousting her from her throne. Her inventive mind, wicked tongue and devastating aim ensure she defends the girls and the school from the zombie horde at the gates.

Plus the "group photo" in the November CD Newsletter has several Hasslefree "young gels" standing-by with Misty on the just-about-to-go-zombie-flattening front!

The Big Needle In Chest Event should bring pretty immediate relief if it is a pneumothorax, but the Keep Warm and Take It Easy bit afterwards is still more key to a successful recovery.

If it's anything like chest drains I've seen, it'll likely look more like casting resin than something you could (or might want to) cast, though it could be quite Cthulhoid...

Announcements and News / Re: Hasslefree Newsletters
« on: October 20, 2012, 01:16:14 PM »
Should've checked the Facebook page first, as that confirms the Hasslefree site as "down and under migration" elsewhere today - sprouting millions of tiny metallic arachnoid legs, clicking against the desktop as the entire edifice glides effortlessly off to its new home. Or off the desk onto the floor (hopefully not, but this is the Internet...).

Also found the web-link for the Newsletter-with-pictures there, so that's OK too!

Still don't like Facebook though - especially with it's current annoying habit of wasting time and effort putting up a "Sign Up For Facebook Now" screen over the top of the page I actually want to read every time I go to the thing. That certainly makes me NEVER want to sign up for Facebook at all!

Could I just remind whoever's posting the Hasslefree Newsletters by e-mail to add the web-address link to them please, so I can see the pictures my ISP still insists on "removing for my protection".

Last couple of Newsletters haven't had the link, and while that wasn't a problem previously, I can't access the Hasslefree website today (just getting an error message "not found"), which I'm guessing may have something to do with the reorganization mentioned in the latest Newsletter's text. Or if not, just some usual Internet gremlins...

Movies/TV/Music Zone / Hasslefree heads-up: "Sound of Cylons"
« on: October 18, 2012, 02:38:08 PM »
Not a Facebooker, as I've said here before, but just wanted to say a huge "Thankyou" for the heads-up to the brilliant YouTube Simon & Garfunkel revision "Sound of Cylons". Like the guy there who commented on tears running down his face with laughter and the sheer brilliance of it, so did I!

If you haven't seen it yet, there's a link on the Hasslefree Facebook page and also via the Facebook feed on the Hasslefree homepage. Best 2½ minutes I've had this year online!

Got my Black Cat order at the weekend, and the Lovecraft casting is better than the photos online suggest. I do like the Fort figure though as well, and succumbed to the matched pair!

Worth getting an order off before too long, as the BCB summer sale (20% off all figures) runs till September 10th, I think.

Suggestions (HF) / Re: A Book Lover
« on: August 09, 2012, 02:28:34 PM »
Just discovered Black Cat Bases have recently added 28mm castings of Lovecraft and Charles Fort with a variety of items on separate sprues for their right hands. They're available singly or as a matched pair, with different sprue combinations.  Lovecraft is cast with a cat rubbing his leg. Lovecraft seems OK - I'd have liked some photos from different angles to be sure - but I can see Fort fitted out with a still-smoking .45 having decided his List of Anomalies needed trimming...

You can find them on the New Products page 2 today (9th August) at:

Books/Comics/Etc / Reanimation options
« on: July 14, 2012, 12:37:37 PM »
Found a paper in the Folklore Society's latest journal (Vol. 123, No. 2, August 2012, pp. 152-178) that discusses an interesting idea for reanimating corpses, simply by having an animal, quite commonly a cat or a dog, pass over the body. The concept (and methods for how to prevent it) is found worldwide according to the handy Table 1 "Corpse traversal and consequences" on pages 153-154.

The article, "Animals Crossing: Analytical Observations on a Cross-culturally Ubiquitous Mortuary Belief", by Gregory Forth & Svitlana Kukharenko, isn't freely available online unfortunately, unless you or your library already has a subscription to the journal "Folklore", but you can read the Abstract at:

http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/0015587X.2012.682475 .

The reanimated dead created thus include vampires and mobile corpses (i.e. zombies), so this would seem an ideal variant for gaming with.

On the bench / Re: Modern cultists - the Mast Beast
« on: July 14, 2012, 12:18:50 PM »
Most impressive; look forward to learning more of these "Upcoming Modern Cultists" of which you speak!

A "real" part-human Hobby Horse would fit into the Goatkin concept too, in case more might be planned.

The origins of the Hobby Horse/Mast Beast/Draconic Creature linked with folkloric activities across various parts of the world, are sufficiently obscure not to let us get bogged down in modern prejudices over the Morris Dance, surely?!

Fenris news / Re: July - early releases
« on: July 03, 2012, 12:48:23 PM »
Excellent stuff as always. Now I can have a ring of Elder Signs around my Necronomicon tea coaster - just in case!

And the quantity of coffins in Set 1 (subtle hint of more to follow, then?) implies someone awfully familiar with typical Mythos RPG casualty-counts.

But at least there's a way to vertically escape from the Sulaco floor tiles now!

I spotted some Treasure Chests on a quick visit to the webstore today as well. Are these new, or did I just miss them on an earlier check?

Still no Return of the Deep Ones though, I noticed...

Pack chatter / Re: Fenris Facebook problems?
« on: June 21, 2012, 01:36:37 PM »
Today it's fine though! A worrying development whatever the case.

Maybe worth thinking of adding a Facebook feed to the Fenris homepage (as Hasslefree already have)?

And Fenris moves into selling Cthulhoid coasters - will your tea still be there when you go back to it, or is that the lapping of the Puppies of Tindalos finishing it off? And are you next...

General Ranting / Re: IMPORTANT: SERVER MOVE
« on: June 21, 2012, 01:15:43 PM »
Sorry to hear this, but I'm not surprised. These kind of attacks seem to be increasing in frequency this year, though the source is rarely obvious (or at least, so the official line often goes...).

In the last ten minutes, I was able to acces the FoD to read a couple of items, then when I tried to reply to one, got a "Server Error" message, and now it's fine again. Not sure if that counts as "the" cockup, or just one of them! If that was it, well done all round (but I'd bet it isn't!).

Does this mean we shouldn't have to hit "refresh" from time to time when first coming to access the FoD after the change?

Pack chatter / Fenris Facebook problems?
« on: June 20, 2012, 03:39:36 PM »
Just tried to check the Fenris Facebook page much as usual today, and find I'm getting only a "You need to log in to access this page" notice from Facebook instead.

I'm not a Facebooker and have no intention to become one, so it looks as if you may need to post here as well with any new stuff guys, or maybe add a "new items" page to the webstore, otherwise anyone else who doesn't like/trust Facebook is going to be effectively cutoff from the latest Fenris news.

Perhaps it's part of the ongoing Facebook strategy to completely destroy their credibility, or maybe some financial-backer has insisted only members can access the pages? Either way, so much for Internet freedom!!

Fenris news / Re: June bits & bobs
« on: June 14, 2012, 02:31:27 PM »
Love the big Lost Shores base, especially the little trundling trilobite. I managed to find the new big Egyptian Ruins base in the webshop before this one as luck had it - it wasn't even on the Facebook page then, I think.

Any chance we might see a similarly sizeable Woodland Path base at some point?

The Counters could be very useful too, depending on their keywords/images.

But anybody walking down the Sulaco corridors deserves all they get, frankly! How much more warning do people need?!

Just been to check the new "Beasties" section as I couldn't get on the FoD - kept getting only an error message (and a "404 Not Found" error message for good measure...). After checking there and the Facebook page, tried the FoD again and got straight in! Technology, eh?

Glad to see the Dragons in the shop. Look forward to the rest of the decals appearing in the fullness of time.

No problem with the slight delay - except you'll have had trouble selling many, I guess...

Suggestions (HF) / Clear resin tentacles
« on: June 05, 2012, 06:16:06 PM »
I'm not really up on the technical aspects of what might be practical with the modern casting resins, but as you seem keen to experiment with clear resins, this seemed a good place to ask.

How about some cthulhoid clear resin tentacles? The mythos often features invisible monsters, or creatures which aren't fully in this dimension, so it would be handy to have something like this which could be partly painted as "solid" but where it also "fades out of existence" into the clear resin.

This would also have conversion potential of course (assuming the clear resin will glue to white metal with the usual adhesives?) - and maybe in time we might see "invisible" heads and hands (or claws, paws, etc., etc.) we could attach to normal white metal castings of any sort. Thinking customised RPG characters and NPCs, here.

Sally: The June Newsletter seems fine to me as regards content. I may not be the best judge though, as I tend to drop in to the FoD most days, and check your Facebook updates via the Hasslefree homepage sidebar, so I get to see most of the new stuff "in advance" anyway.

Two further thoughts. I've kept an eye out for the promised new dragon and tattoo decals, but they don't seem to have appeared in the webshop since Salute; I'm hoping perhaps they're among the "non mini items" which didn't make the cut to be listed in the Newsletter, and not that you've run into production problems. Or maybe I've been looking in the wrong places...

Thought two. Can't believe there's some jerk slagging off Hasslefree because you're providing what customers have asked for (from your Facebook comments)!!! Then again, the Internet seems regularly to attract people with more time than nouse.
