: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso March 30, 2014, 10:00:38 AM
I was lucky enough to win this on Ebay:

30 new on sprue with six poorly assembled and a bit covered in glue... so the six that weren't on the sprues were perfect for a bit of conversion. Here is the first one:

There are areas that I think need changing... but it is a gradual process so the next one will reflect the changes.

Comments welcome :)

I have enough bolters, Catachan Lasguns, Cadian Lasguns and the ones that came in this box of guard... which weapons do you think would be best for the troops (I am not sold on the old school lasguns :( ).
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: BecauseWeIsMonsters March 30, 2014, 01:07:47 PM
Thats a very nice and convincing conversion.

Regarding the weapons, I have a similar dilemma with mine. The trouble is a lot of alternative options might look a bit bulky for them. I have a pile of Heresy ganger weapons so I might give them a try.

Some paint (the base is yet to be painted):

Liking that a lot Inso. Your paint improves.
And the base is better for no paint.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: BecauseWeIsMonsters March 31, 2014, 10:52:24 PM
Now it is painted it looks even better. This conversion really works in my book. Are you tempted to do them all as grymm? Or maybe some human allies?

Further to my above post I can confirm that the Heresy assault rifles are a good fit for these guys and might look more in keeping with the grymm weapons. They cost 20 p each if i remember rightly. (i might use them as bolters with underslung auxiliary grenade launchers for my Rogue trader stuff).

But it looks like the cadian ones work well too judging by what you did with this one. Looks like you cut the sword to size. Looks good.

: Inso April 01, 2014, 06:57:31 AM
I am planning to convert the six that were loose into Squats (like the one above) and then see what happens.

I have nearly finished the second one and he is carrying a bolter. He is also a bit shorter because I have removed a section from the torso. Shortening the torso has worked well :).
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso April 01, 2014, 08:15:37 PM
The next one has been finished. In my opinion, the proportions are much more Squat like than the first one but the bolter looks a bit big for him... please feel free to comment :) :

And I was asked to put together a guide to make them... it is on my blog if you are interested:

http://insosworld.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/a-short-how-to-space-dwarfs.html

The next one will be a bit more involved because I'll have to sort out bent legs rather than straight ones... so a little more chopping and sculpting will be involved :) .

I have just finished stripping a load of plastic squats and imperial guardsmen - they are supposed to be going on ebay .......... damn you Inso you are giving me ideas !

Good! I like to give people ideas :D... at least you have some squat bodies to compare your converted guard with.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso April 04, 2014, 06:55:43 AM
I have nearly finished painting No2 and have started converting No3. He is a 'lunging' miniature and he needed a bit of extra chopping but he looks OK. He is the first one with a helmet on too... it is the 'make or break' miniature for the helmets so it will be interesting to see what he looks like. The lunging body was also less detailed and had glue around the chest/shoulders so he will need a little bit of extra putty work... I should have some pix soon.

Looks good to me. Like the work you have done on the faces. The choice of lasgun fits the miniature very well too. The plastic bolters seem a bit big for them imo.

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...

Cheers :)

Number four is almost finished too... he's got a las-carbine like number 3. Just a belt and face to sculpt... and a bit of a tidy on the arms.

Here is a question... I have a box of Tau firewarriors and I was wondering whether to make some Squats with some Tau weapons and equipment. Does that sound like a good or bad idea? Maybe use the weapons, chests and arms (with extra finger on the hands... Tau only have three fingers) of the firewarriors but the chopped down legs of a Catachan.

Thoughts?
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...

The fourth Squat has now been sculpted:

The third one has been base-coated and washed ready for highlights and basing :) .

looking good as always, does the box come wiyh any support weapons.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso April 10, 2014, 04:11:45 PM
Cheers.

There are lascannons in the box but they are the old OLD shoulder mounted ones... however, I will be using some (even if it is just for a heavy squad). I also have some other support weapons from the latest IG boxes so they may well be used as well.

My overall plan for the IG box is likely to be:
Command unit (5 troops)
Platoon command unit (5 troops)
Platoon unit (10 troops, sgt, heavy and special weapon)
Platoon unit (10 troops, sgt, heavy and special weapon)
Support squad (6 troops, 3 with heavy weapons).

Obviously, it is going to be a slow process... and it will be beset with distractions (and some Tau Squats... possibly)...

: beefcake April 10, 2014, 08:04:02 PM
I love those old shoulder mounted las cannons. They're only about the size of current las guns though now aren't they? Lol

Nice conversions

I'm not sure you don't do this sculpting thing for a living.   :hmmm  Even though I remember seeing photos and reading your posts about raf stuff in Africa and the splat decal in that airfix helo kit.   :tantrum:

Really liking what you are coming out with here.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso April 11, 2014, 06:51:56 AM
I'm glad you like them :) .

I am not at a standard that I would be comfortable selling wholesale yet. When I am, I will think about it but I am happy with the occasional commission.

My full time job is very intense... I am part of the team that is bringing Puma 2 into service and there is a LOT of stuff involved with that.  I need something to take my mind off things (my hobby) not add to all the stress :).

I also love my job and don't want to leave (at the moment). Turning my hobby into a job doesn't thrill me either :(

Looks as though you've made your own votoms-like kit.  Quite like the look of it.  Tau gear doesn't look out of place to me either.  Makes me think anti tank or hard point elimination team.

Great faces.
The shouldered gun looks odd to me.  Not out of place, a sculpt issue.  Probably looks fine painted but, the part under the barrel and above the hand grip looks like mold flash when viewed purely in profile.  Could just be the camera-cyclops-anti-depthperception-effect that seems to happen with photos.  Or is it just me.
Deff looking cool though.

Here is the squad of my converted Squats all together:

... and after a spot of luck on Ebay, I managed to get some proper plastic Squats (20 on the sprue!). Unfortunately, two of them didn't have heads so I needed to make them:

As you can see, there is a difference in size and proportion so I will be using the proper Squats as a heavy weapon platoon with self propelled, heavy weapons (with stowage space for equipment and personal weapons). I am thinking of using the little gun-drones from Anvil Industries:

http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=114&product_id=313

... another diversion...
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...

In another completely random change of direction... I decided to save a few pennies and make my own mobile weapon platforms. I found some Epic landraiders, some Imperial Guard heavy weapons and some plastic bricks and have got this far in the WIP:

I have another six to build but they are likely to be a mix of heavy bolters and missile launchers (or just heavy bolters)...

I have also started building the Warlord. This is a very early WIP:

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...

Not sold on the mobile weapons platforms because they show too much what they are made of. Of course, that may change once they are primed.

The warlord is very promising. Looking forward to it.

...WIP...

Just saying ;)
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso August 17, 2014, 12:51:41 PM
So... as is usually the case, I have been distracted and have started something else. Over the past few months I have been collecting together plastic Squat miniatures... and have a truck-load now so I have started putting them together. I am sculpting the arms myself (to try and get better poses) and will have berets for all the Squats that don't have helmets. I expect that the mobile gun platforms will join this army rather than my home-grown space Dwarf one... but it's early days and I may yet get distracted again.
Anyway, here is what I have so far:

You will notice that I have coated some of the 'wire arms' with a first layer of green stuff ready for the proper sculpting to go on top. They are obviously still WIP but this pic shows what the guns look like and how I am arming my Sgts as well. The two sgts with berets will not be used for the helmeted platoons so they are being saved for a platoon that has berets instead. Here's a pic of my Squat making mat:

You'll notice the weapons for the troops, that are either getting lengthened (plasma pistols into plasma guns) or have been shortened (lasguns) plus a couple of Cadian flamers. There are no weapons for two of the troopers as they will be controlling the heavy weapon units.

I also have this finished character:

I think this project is going to take a while :D ...

This week, I have used a bit of extra free time to work on the Engineseer. He only needs his head and back-pack sorting and he will be done. I have also added some arms to 'Big Robot' but they are only loose as I will need to remove them to work on the body areas:

Well, it would seem that I have enough time out here in the Falklands to get a bit of sculpting done so I have been busy putting arms on a few Squats; namely the platoon command squad:

... and the first infantry squad:

The tracked heavy weapons are at home and I need a few other components from my bits box to complete the units properly but from a sculpting perspective, the two units are finished except for some details on the heavy weapon controller's wrist unit (which has now been finished but not photographed).

I have started on the next four (the special troops from the second infantry squad) and am very near to finisheing them to a similar standard (mostly just hands/gloves to go).

It almost looks like I will have my first platoon of Squats finished for when I return home... who'd have thought it  :lmao
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso March 01, 2015, 10:25:08 PM
Another week and another squad of Squats finished to a similar level as the previous one:

I just need to add a heavy weapon unit and some bits and bobs from my pitsbox when I get home and they will be done. I will have to tidy the whole platoon up yet (a few gaps to fill) but they are all finished apart from that.

I'll pop up a platoon pic at some point... there's more over at Inso's World (in my signature).

Nice work,

Thanks :)

Open a shop? I'm not sure that fits into my 'move to Cornwall and be a hippy' plan... :)

Just make the minis out of hemp, it'll work fine

We used to have a games shop here long ago, very breifly.  We used to joke about the GW figures being so expensive because they were made out of pressed cocaine,  judging by the look of the owner.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso March 12, 2015, 11:03:24 PM
The full platoon, finished as far as I can:

When they get home, the heavy weapon tractors will be added. I will also add packs to the loaders and some sort of comms equipment to one member from each unit (command and each infantry squad). Then they will get some paint before I crack on with the next platoon.

I am beginning to wish that I had brought more of them with me to convert as I have now run out and will have to make do with sculpting penguins :(

Nice, tears of nostalgia are running down my cheeks! I should never have sold my Squatties!  :happytears:

I know what you mean... at least you sold yours... I just threw mine away :( (apart from about 7 which I swapped for Grymn with Kev).

Well... I've finished the infantry squads properly now:

I am about to move onto the next platoon... which will look surprisingly similar :D

It took a little longer than I planned but here is the first squad of Exo Armoured Squats (I still need to drill the barrels out... but I haven't found my drill since returning from abroad yet :) ):

I have enough for a second squad similar to this plus two champions/leaders/commanders but I think I will move onto some basic troops again for now (either that or the Sentinels).

A 'pre-converted' Sentinel:

That's quite a meaty fist. What are the plans for this one? Enclosed cockpit?
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 10, 2015, 09:19:54 AM
Yep. Not too much more than that... maybe a few small decorations but I quite like it as it is (apart from the exposed head).
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake May 11, 2015, 06:06:44 AM
Yeah. Not very practical (armour-wise) that way.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 17, 2015, 02:34:15 PM
This week has mostly been about travelling but I have managed to get a bit further with the Sentinel Sqn:

I have also ordered a third so that when it arrives, I can get it upto the same standard as these two. Once I've done that, I'll be finishing all three heads together so that I can get them all similar.

I have also been working on the troop squad but am putting together a little guide with them so I won't be posting any pics. Needless to say, they all have neckerchiefs, beards with moustaches and wire pinned into their shoulder sockets, ready for the next stage. I will be converting the weapons next, ready to pin to the bodies so that the 'wire arms' can be bent to shape ready for the putty to be added.

With all that in mind... my thoughts turn to what's next.

I have got planned (so far):
1x Commander (Exo armour)
with command section (5x Exo armour)
Exo Armour squad (5x Exo armour)
Dreadnought
2x Infantry platoon (each with command and 2 squads)
1x Veteran platoon (with command and 2 squads)
1x Sentinel Sqn (3x Sentinel)

That's about it for now... so what's next after that? I have had Wyverns suggested as a support weapon and Chimeras... Hmmm.... :)
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...

Those are really cool. Changes the look entirely but really works well.
Have you seen the robots for the dakka dakka kickstarter?
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 18, 2015, 08:37:14 AM
Cheers :)

The Dakka bots are a bit of a double edged sword... there are parts of the design that are excellent but there are others that look overly toy like. I am keeping an eye on them though... you never know what may turn up next :)
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 18, 2015, 02:50:10 PM
I am far too tired and clumsy at the moment to be converting lasguns so I thought I'd make a start on the dreadnought (Sentinel and Squat for size comparison):

Obviously, the conversion is at an early stage but the original kit is from here:

Glad you got rid of that central gun.
Are you going to take off the rivets? Might suit the sentinel better then?
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 21, 2015, 07:05:12 AM
Good point... I hadn't thought of that...

I'm not sure...

But in other news, I have the third Vulkan in the same condition as the other two now so I will be working on their heads next :)

I am really quite pleased how these are turning out. I have managed to get a hint of 'AT Votoms' in there... anyway, here are the almost finished Sentinels:

I prefer those to the Votoms kits.

Here are some pics of a 3d print.

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...

Cheers... but as a true fan of the VOTOMs armour, we will have to agree to disagree on that front (my future plan is to build a Grymn version of a VOTOMs army... I will be converting and casting VOTOMs suits in a relatively small scale [1/60] and mass producing them... not yet though... later in life).

That walker looks very impressive but WOAH is it big :o !? That would have to be a proxy Knight or something in a GW army.

So... what's next in the army? I completely forgot about a commander... so I threw one together  :

I have been faced with a blip this week. I managed to get a look at the Codex Astra Militarum (what used to be the Imperial Guard) and discovered that the command squad troopers couldn't have bolt pistols... so I had to replace them with las pistols:

I like the idea of the beserkers. You're not going to put berets on top of the mohawks though are you? ;)
I had my wisdom teeth out a while back too. Broke through to my sinus though and had to be stitched.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso June 06, 2015, 07:19:21 AM
I've decided that the standard units will have berets and normal hair so that the Berserkers stand out with their mohawks :)

My wisdom teeth removal was a very professional job and although I have a dull ache at the moment, it has been a remarkably uneventful thing.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake June 06, 2015, 07:27:55 AM
yeah. One of my teeth had a hook in it so it needed half an hour of work to remove. the other popped out in 20 seconds. At least the follow up visits didn't cost extra.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso June 06, 2015, 12:46:47 PM
One of the reasons I had them out was because it was free (military dentist :) ) and I knew that it would cost once I left the military.

I have been busy getting the platoon up to a standard level... so now they all have a layer of putty on their arms, ready for the sculpting to begin:

... and for a change of pace, I have started work on a Gun Servitor for my Engineseer (this is the first of 2):

I still have lots to do but it's a start :)

love that servitor.
would suit your beetlebots too.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...

Cheers :) ... he's finished now:

I've started on the next one but I haven't got very far with it yet... theres info on Inso's World (amongst other things):

http://insosworld.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/a-nice-cuppa.html

I've also began thinking about how I could include Psykers in the army without using Squats and I was given a good idea by a guy on Facebook... use beastmen. Obviously, I don't have any beast men because I don't collect fantasy... but I have some Tau plastics and some green stuff so I may end up putting together a few Primaris Psykers in the form of converted beastmen. I think it is really appropriate because they are another part of the Rogue Trader days that have been washed aside. Then of course... there are weirdvane psykers... but I'm not so sure I want any of those yet.

So many things to think about :) .

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso June 21, 2015, 03:32:15 PM
So... today we have a complete Engineseer unit:

And I am currently working on a Beastman Primaris Psyker with a hint of Jedi about him. There is a small update on the blog too (a new magazine to read? Maybe):

The head obviously needs finishing... but then it's mostly detailing and tidying up the missed bits. He's going to get a holstered laspistol and his hooves will be in boots or will have spats on them. He'll also get the Tau powerpack on his back to power the refractor field. The head is going to be the classic goat style... if I can get it right :)

: Inso June 23, 2015, 08:49:21 AM
I would have... but I am not using metal miniatures in this army... maybe the occasional brass pit or aluminium rod but no actual metal miniatures :)

Plus... everything is converted (except for the gun tractors... and they'll likely get a few runes on them).

: beefcake July 28, 2015, 09:59:28 AM
I think I may have some of those stashed away. Or did I sell them? Really should look great with you space dwarf army
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso July 28, 2015, 11:05:40 AM
The only trouble with the badgers is that they have a sort of 'feral' armour on them and that doesn't really go with the uniform look of the standard platoons. With that in mind, I am trying to decide just how 'feral' the riders should be. I will be using the standard plastic Squat bodies with the bald heads with glasses. I plan to chop the bodies at the waist, cut the boots off and use the torso with the boots and green-stuff in between.

I could give the riders mohicans but that would be a bit close to the priests I have planned. I could give them berets but that ties them a little too closely with the support platoon (which will be uniform but with berets instead of helmets). I could give them alternative hats/helmets... Hmm.

The other option is to give them bare arms rather than covered with sleeves. What about trophies on the badgers (the heads of their enemies? Is that too much?).

So the plan is to get the riders chopped, have the trousers sculpted and heads/boots glued on and then attach them to the badgers. Next will involve customisation... so it will be quite a lot of work but I will need to make a few decisions once they are on the badgers with regard to just how feral I want them to be...

Sometimes I question the amount of thought I put into projects like this... I could be using my mind for the good of all mankind instead! :D
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake July 29, 2015, 08:36:01 AM
Have you thought about making the armour on the Badgers like like surgical implants and have wires and the like sticking out? Probably not int he same theme though. Feral riders sounds cool. How about just wild unkempt hair, top knots or something like that?

Also I thought you might like this if you haven't see it. On sale quite a bit

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso July 29, 2015, 12:16:43 PM
I definitely want to go feral with the rough riders... and the top knot idea may work... maybe with some bandanas as well...

Don't show me pics of cool robots like that... especially when I absolutely love the shape and style but am trying to resist already :)

It is the sort of thing that I would buy loads of... if I wasn't on the verge of moving on to different climes and having to thin down a lot of stuff. I saw Scurve's version of it on LAF and it immediately got my mind working... :(

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso July 30, 2015, 10:36:04 AM
What scale? I've seen them in kit form at 1/200, 1/100, 1/72 an 1/60 (at various ridiculous prices).

I guess for 28mm, you could get away with 1/72 but 1/60 would definitely be preferable (but quite large).

... what about Tomahawks though?
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake July 30, 2015, 11:26:30 AM
1/72. They are only about $20 NZ from HLJ but they are always on back order when I check and I have no idea about their post rates, I guess I could just ask them. I like the tomahawk but too pricey. I never knew they were macross until a short time ago (a year or so). I always thought of them as the battletech robots.

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake July 31, 2015, 08:39:00 AM
Actually I checked and I can see their postage rates which aren't too bad. Where are those ones from? How do they scale with 28mm?
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso July 31, 2015, 08:58:04 AM
They are all from EBay and the larger ones are about 5-6 inches tall. There is space in the torso for a 28mm bod but they are obviously scaled for much smaller (1/100 scale) troops.

All of the ones in the picture were put together with a view to using them for 28mm armies (but Grymn ones... as is usually the case :D ).

Back to the subject of Space Dwarfs and their army, here's a badger on a new, shiny base:

In a further, some might say heretical move, I have decided to add a unit of wyrdvane psykers to my Squat army so what better way to do it than to recycle something from yester-year?

As a result, I had a sudden burst of inspiration and decided that Hrud would be cool additions to the army and I had something in mind so I went into my cupboard and pulled these out:

My frog-people! Now I know that the general thoughts on Hrud are that they were place-holders for space-rats but the picture in the Rogue Trader rule book didn't show a face, just a cloaked figure with a rat's tail... so that is what I have made :). I may add some pouches to them but apart from that, they are finished.

I hope you like them :)

Aluminium tube (1/16" diameter 50mm long) with very fine brass wire wrapped around it (I drilled into the tube so that the tail of the brass could be held in place while I wound it onto the tube). Glued in place with a quick smear of super-glue to hold it in place. Then it is a bit of putty to tidy things up. I haven't decided how to represent the explosive tip yet but it won't be difficult :) .

So, another day and more Squat goodness arrives in the thread, this time... not for me... a commission.

Here's a teaser:

... and there is a whole squad of them here:

It is nice to actually finish a commission (rather than being rubbish).

While I was converting some gunners for my heavy weapon tractors (2nd platoon - and they are all done, waiting to dry :) ), I decided that I couldn't wait any longer so I started putting together a Bullgryn that is made from a Mantic Dreadball Orx model... here is the first test (WIP) with a Hasslefree human and an older version of a GW Ogryn:

I had hoped to be a bit further along with these... but here are five finished gunners with five assembled missile launchers:

The loaders are on the table and are still WIP... but will be finished this week (at some point).

All of the heavy weapon teams for the second platoon are now finished:

Cool. The hatch looks good. Hopefully the new casting will go well for you. That's something I'd like to get back into but I don't have enough free cash for silicon let alone the resin.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso October 11, 2015, 03:17:13 PM
I'm hoping that I can get away with using plaster of paris instead of resin. Bulldog UK casts loads of small stuff with plaster and it seems to work for him (and plaster is pennies compared with resin).

Obviously, if plaster doesn't work for me, I'll have to go for resin... but I am also hoping that EBay sales will cover the costs on that :).

In other news, I have started work on the command squad but haven't got very far:

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Steel Penguin October 12, 2015, 06:19:37 PM
one way to toughen plaster is to paint it with polystyrene dissolved in liquid poly cement,  it can be a bit slow, ( and smelly)  but it stops the plaster crumbling on the thinner edges, and means it will take paint like a normal plastic part
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso October 15, 2015, 12:41:16 PM
Cheers for the info :) . Once I've sorted some mould rubber I'll give basic plaster a go to get the hang of it and see how it looks... then I'll see if I can cope with your suggestion... trial and error will be required :) (I've never done any casting... EVER so I just want to start simple and work up).

Do you have those days when someone suggests something and as much as you really don't want it to, the suggestion takes root in your mind to a point where you can't help but start plans to put it into action?

Someone suggested that I should have some veteran Tyranid hunters in this army...

...and it has really planted a seed.

My thoughts are to have some Squat survivors that were pretty badly mauled but were able to get fixed up by the Adeptus Mechanicus in exchange for some help with tech. The Squats and the mechanicus have always had an affinity with each other so what better way to show it than a bit of mutual trade... bionics for weapon tech?

The basic idea is that the survivors are likely to have at least one, possibly four amputations (due to all those claws) and some will have burns/scarred faces etc (due to the acid blood).

Now, I could sculpt/scratch build but it would take too long. I could use Necron parts (but then they would look like servitors)... however, what about using Skitarii parts? I could even use the rules for Skitarii for the veterans. I won't be covering them in Tyranid trophies (they aren't Orks... Squats don't need to be covered in bits of their enemies) so a mix of Skitarii bionics and Squat parts.

But I need to finish the command squad! I've also just ordered another three Vulkans to turn into Sentinels...

I wish that I could switch off sometimes :(

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso October 18, 2015, 04:23:54 PM
So... I went and bought a box of Skitarii and have been thinking a lot about what I need to do with them... and have got this far:

I have put a big lump of text on my blog to go with this so if you want to get a bit of background on this rather impromptu diversion, follow the link:

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso October 20, 2015, 09:22:24 AM
In a bid to try and rationalise things, my army (not including the Skitarii) has two distinct factions. The majority of the army comes from the Astra Militarum codex with some of the more specialist troops coming from the Adeptus Astartes codex so I thought I'd call the Tyranid hunters Scouts. Here's what I have listed so far:

Astra Militarum:
HQ Squad
Infantry Platoons
Sentinel Squadrons
Weirdvane Psykers
Primaris Psykers
Engineseers
Priests
Ogryns/Bullgryns
Rough Riders
Vehicles (TBD)

Adeptus Astartes:
Terminator Captain (Exo Squat)
Terminator Squad (Exo Squats)
*NEW* Scout Squads (Skitarii/veteran Tyranid hunters)

Obviously, lots of it is WIP but I have managed to convert/sculpt over 80 so far so the army is slowly getting there :)

Still lots to go but there are a few little 'bumps' that I need to iron out with the unit before I will be able to finish them. I will be the first to admit that they aren't necessarily the best armed/equipped unit from a gaming perspective... but I don't game so it doesn't concern me too much.

So I saw some female head sprues over at Statuesque miniatures ( http://www.statuesqueminiatures.co.uk/ ) and thought that they would look good on a few Squats... so I bought some and fitted one on a Squat body. Initially they were slightly small but I padded out the cheeks and this is what I came up with:

I will be putting together a unit of these and will use them as veterans. Most will have berets :) . I just need to decide on what special/heavy weapons to give them now.

This is the first 'official' member of the army to be painted :).

I have another five (with berets) on the table at the moment. The trouble is, I tried using the plastic arms for them and they just looked so bad that I am going back to the arm sculpting process I have used for the other Squats... so they may take a little while to finish.

The plastic arms are really rubbish when used for two handed weapons :(

The five ladies have wire arms at the moment and will be getting some Green stuff added later :) . I'll get them converted and painted before I move on to the remaining 4 (3 special weapons and 1 comms).

The angularity and the reverse rake on the nose make me think thunderbirds/Gerry Anderson for some reason (which is a good thing). The curvaceous turret doesn't seem to fit for me, it's probably not helped by the fact it's a different colour right now? I really do like the turret mount though, the way the hull curves and overhangs like a balcony. Not sure why it does that but it has visual interest.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso March 29, 2016, 11:09:58 AM
Cheers :)

I really get the Gerry Anderson thing... and now that you have mentioned it I can see where you are coming from. I based the initial concept on some Khurasan Miniatures transports but they have evolved a little since then. I think of them as 'armoured airfield fire engines... I am even planning to have a heavy flamer on the front that sort of mimics the foam nozzles :D.

(there is a see through shot glass piece under the overhang that is extremely difficult to see in the picture... but it provides a curved surface that goes from the balcony down to the deck).

It is an evolving process that is dependent on a few components that I have been waiting for (First the wheels, then the main turret and now the side turrets). I have just this second thought about the heavy flamer and realised that I have some Old Crow turrets that may fit the bill perfectly!

... and this, just for interest's sake, is the side project :) :

Great job. Nice crisp lines... what is your secret?! I always find my putty gets to hard to work too fast but every person I find to give tips say they leave their putty for 5 minutes before they even start working it O.o I must be doing it wrong ; ; This is why i Need an active sculpting forum for trading tips and tricks

I think that you would be better served going to a sculpting class where you sit with a sculptor and work through your issues personally. A tutorial can only take you so far and from what you said about 'enjoying college where you had a collection of artistic people sharing ideas' suggests that having a sculptor there to address where you think you are going wrong would be better.

Anyway, back to the army and here's the third finished member of the army command squad; a sniper:

And FINALLY (WHEW!) the army command squad is finished... first the Medic and Comms:

Followed by the full squad:

I guess I should really start painting some now... but my sculpting mojo has kicked in again and I quite fancy finishing off this Psyker now:

I thought I'd write a tiny bit of fiction to go with my army. It just explains why certain aspects of the army are like they are... anyway... here it is:

It also gives a little bit of a precursor to what my veteran Tyranid hunters will look like :) .

And to finish off for the moment... A blog post to go with a massive army pic and a bit of information about what stage the army is at: http://insosworld.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/the-squat-army-so-far.html

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake May 09, 2016, 06:12:10 AM
Very cool. Nice sculpting, very clean. Do you mix putties?
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 09, 2016, 06:40:18 AM
Cheers :) . I mix green stuff... other wise it wouldn't set :D

Normally, I use Greenstuff on its own but for larger sculpts I may build the core from standard Milliput. If I want a particularly soft putty that will be harder when set, I'll mix Milliput with Green Stuff or use a Greenstuff/Brownstuff mix.

However, my usual putty is straight Greenstuff.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake May 11, 2016, 07:19:30 AM
Ah, mixing the green stuff is where I'm going wrong, I thought these blobs of yellow and blue where meant to harden.

I thought you may have mixed as the photos of the GS look fairly light, must just be the lighting.
Musculature and fists look great.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 11, 2016, 08:33:59 AM
I get the ribbon type Green Stuff and just just cut across the end to get a thin strip (I don't meticulously measure ratios between blue/yellow). I pinch the joint between yellow and blue out and discard it before mixing the putty. That means that I get a bit of variation in the mix but I just work with whatever turns up :)

The lighting in the photos probably doesn't help... :o

The ribbon I have at the moment has a thinner blue strip than yellow so I get a fairly light coloured mix.

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake May 11, 2016, 09:00:48 AM
I always forget to take the middle strip out and end up with that already cured bit in my mix, a pain if I don't get it out before sculpting. My son wants me to sculpt a troll for him to go with those extremely cheap em4 orcs he spent some cash on. Good deal for a 7 year old with birthday money to spend.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 11, 2016, 11:19:25 AM
A Troll eh?

Maybe (if you weren't keen on sculpting a troll) you could try getting a Reaper Bones troll from Miniature Heroes (a UK supplier of Reaper). It would likely be cheaper than the amount of Green Stuff you'd use.

I'd suggest building the core with Milliput over your wire frame. It is much cheaper than Green Stuff and will do the job nicely (it's what I use in this instance... my Mushroom Troll I made is a good example).
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake May 12, 2016, 08:07:32 AM
Funny thing is I haven't been able to find a good supplier of millliput over here since my regular train shop closed down. I also know of a Australia supplier of Milliput that sells it pretty cheap... I've been keen to sculpt again for a while so will probably give it a go again rather than just buying one. (sorry for the off topic stuff)
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 12, 2016, 08:55:40 AM
No worries :)

You could probably get away with sculpey or some such for the core (it only needs to bulk out the wire to save on Green Stuff. Failing that, you could scrunch cooking foil around the wire and then green stuff on top... or that plaster infused bandage (mod rock?) if you are going quite big (then you could get your lad involved in the process by showing him how to wrap the wire, ready for the sculpting).

If he's keen to get involved then let him. Maybe, while you are working on a troll, he could be building an Earth Elemental out of mod-rock (with a small amount of help when it comes to building the armature and sculpting the hands and face).

Another option it to wrap the wire core with more wire to bulk it out.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake May 12, 2016, 10:35:48 AM
I have a few kg's of air drying clay so that might be a good base. He'll love making some stuff out of that too. First we have to paint the cardboard he wants to game on (We've been working our way through Heroquest and he's keen on making his own board.)
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 12, 2016, 11:12:09 AM
Air drying clay would work too... just make sure that the core is properly dry before you put stuff around it or it may do weird things (crack, split, bubbles etc).

If you add PVA glue to the paint, it will stop the paint being absorbed into the card, will adhere nicely and will end up with a nice satin finish :)
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake May 13, 2016, 05:43:05 AM
That's a nice tip. Never knew that. cheers :)
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Internalclock May 13, 2016, 07:35:58 AM
Id say if you are going to go with air drying clay then go for the tinfoil over the armature to bulk it out or it might end up heavy as F**k. which could lead to thinner areas not being able to support large areas or it being lop sided and falling over :)super sculpy is actually super easy to use if you have a oven that produces a even heat :) just bake it in thin layers.

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 21, 2016, 07:47:08 AM
In other news... I bought some of the new Mantic Forge Father 'Steel Warriors' recently and have put a couple together. I was hoping that they would fit into my army without any conversion but you will see from the pic that they are far too tall (from left to right: Squat, Squat/Steel Warrior, Steel Warrior, Space Marine):

I have quickly put together a mock-up of a Steel Warrior body on the legs from a 'sawn in half' plastic Squat (using blu-tack) to see how it looks... and I think that the height will work but I now need to work out how I am going to convert 20 of them without necessarily having to sculpt 20 pairs of legs :o ...

... nothing ever goes smoothly :( .

There are other issues with them but I will sort out a review and post it in my blog once I can bring myself to do it. I am quietly disappointed with them... even though, in their own right, they are nice looking miniatures... just too big for my particular army :(

Have you thought about sculpting and casting a set of legs? You could do it easily with a 1 piece mold. You may need a bit of experimentation to get all the bubbles out, especially with the tips of the feet but other than that it would save a lot of time. Then you can make as many as you want if you feel like getting more steel warriors. Modding them by putting on little extras such as canteens would allow for a bit of diversity.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 23, 2016, 06:51:12 AM
I have ordered some Blue Stuff for making moulds and have started to sculpt 3 pairs of legs (for now). If they look OK, I will cast many, probably using a mix of Green Stuff and Milliput. I will be using a 2 piece press mould and it will be a total experiment because I haven't done this sort of thing before :).

If it works, I will cast many and will probably buy more Steel Warriors when they eventually get sold on their own (I love the kits).

Unknown to a lot of people, I think about casting pretty much all the time but I am in a position where I can't add to the stockpile of crap that I have cluttering the place up because we are thinning down to move. One of my retirement projects is to cast up a special army so I will need to get all the good stuff like pressure pots and resin etc... but all that will come in the future when we have our own home :)

I thought the one on the left was a bunny. I was a little sad when I saw the next image and relised he wasn't. Great job on them.

I knew that would happen... that is the only reason I put the side shot in :) (I thought the same when viewed from the front). I think the main reason is that I tuck the ears so close to the head so you can't see them from the front.

Hopefully, he'll be finished this week because then I can start on the priests (Berserkers with big mohawks :D ).

: beefcake May 23, 2016, 08:55:58 AM
I recently bought some silicone and some resin for casting up some building pieces. Haven't got around to casting them yet, it's for a superstar reject I have going on. I'd like to see how your casting goes when you get around to it. When I cast in one piece molds I find it mesmerising to watch the resin setting, lol.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 23, 2016, 09:44:19 AM
I have never cast anything... other than ice cubes :D

Blue stuff is the reuseable stuff that comes in sticks, you warm it in water until soft, then cast with it. Before I risk my sculpted legs, I'll try a few other bits and bobs to see how it goes first :)

I will post about how it goes on my blog... success or failure... Hey, I may even make a video :o :D
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake May 24, 2016, 12:26:20 AM

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 24, 2016, 09:07:42 PM
Hopefully, I can work out how to get some decent casts because I've already started on three pairs of legs:

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 28, 2016, 04:58:34 PM
Well, I've finished the first 'leg blank':

I will be press moulding this and then adding pouches etc to the casts. I think that the legs have turned out OK (not awesome... just OK) but if the pressmoulding works, it will add a new dimension to how I produce the legs. If it doesn't work, I will have to get them cast up for me... so we'll have to see.

this afternoon, I have been messing around with Blue Stuff / Instant Mould and I currently have a little cast drying in the stuff. I just put a standard plastic Squat body in there, just to see how it turns out. It will be squashed after I have seen what I need to :)  . I am using a mix of Green Stuff and Milliput in the mould so now it's just a case of sitting and waiting for a couple of hours :) .

This could be the start of a beautifull friendship (or not :o )....
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...

Works really well with the body.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso May 29, 2016, 03:16:51 PM
Cheers :) .

I reckon the next pair will have slightly thinner legs but I am relatively happy with the result.

I'll be ticking along with these because they are a bit down the list of things to complete for the army... the first being the unit of Primaris Psykers / Jedi Beastmen... which, by chance, I ahve now finished:

I still need to adjust the base to tilt him forward a little but I am glad to have his sculpting done. Next up will be the three Ministorum Priests / Squat Berserkers... but I haven't started them yet.

As is usually the case, there is more information on the Blog:

I now need to sculpt another pair of legs in a different pose for the next five. I think they've turned out OK so far and once I have made a total of four leg poses and press-moulded them up, I'll be able to mix and match between 5-man squads for a bit of variety.

This pic shows the press-moulded heads that I made so that I could have space inside the helmet to sculpt on each face. These are all in need of faces (obviously), the helmets being filled/cleaned up and then it is just a case of gluing on the arms and packs.

I am thinking that a couple of these will have some facial disfigurement/bionic implants and one may even have a full face-plate to hide his terrible injuries. I have also started a third detachment for my army but I am not in a position to share anything interesting just yet... but it will be fun :) .

Not really... I don't think he has any plans to make them available to the public. He just wants them for a personal project :)

My own Squat miniatures will be different... fully one-piece casts for a start... and much heavier set too.

: Inso October 02, 2016, 09:15:36 PM
I have had a dodgy moment with the Eversor Assassin and he ended up massive... so I did this instead... I went and finished the veteran Tyranid hunters :) :

...and so the production line starts again. From leg sculpt, to press moulding and finally to being assembled with plastic components from a Mantic Steel Warrior... all that is needed now is the belt buckle, pouches and holsters to be sorted out and these will be finished:

I have another lump of putty in the mould at the moment and that should be ready to remove tomorrow.

I plan on having six squads of five and that means I need to sculpt five different poses of legs to make every squad have no legs the same. I have already finished the first unit of five in one leg pose, this is the second with a third leg sculpt 'on the corks'. Once I have produced six casts from each of the five leg poses, I will mix them into their final units :)...

Then I will have six units of Squat Hearthguard (count as Space Marine Scouts) :) .

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso October 16, 2016, 09:49:57 AM
They are all finished now:

Lots more information about them can be found on my blog:

Next up... another leg sculpt to complete :) .

Looking good Inso, great job on those legs.

What's that stuff you're using for press-moulding?
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso October 16, 2016, 07:49:45 PM
Cheers :)

I am using this stuff for the mould:

http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/26-reusable-blue-stuff

and Milliput to actually put into the mould for the casting.

If you click the link and then on the four stick version, there are a couple of how-to videos on there to show how easy it is :)

: beefcake October 17, 2016, 08:35:49 AM
lol, I just bought that stuff from greenstuffworld too. They sell some great stuff (I made a fairly big order so shipping was worth it).
They should look good when finished.

These two are the sixth casts of the first two leg sculpts:

They represent Sgt Telion and one of his squad, although they are Hearthguard, just like the rest of the 'counts-as' scouts :)

With the release of the next big boxed game from GW, I saw the new style plastic termies and had a thought...

... so I have bagged a few off Ebay and await their arrival to see what I can make of them :)
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...

I believe the powerclaws are optional, as well.
Your edit looks great Inso, you'll do a grand job.

I was tempted to buy into this, but another boxed game under the painting table would spell doom for my marriage.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso October 30, 2016, 09:40:31 PM
I was wary of the boxed set too... hence I just got a few termies from Ebay.

Interested in seeing your results.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: leadhead October 31, 2016, 02:52:29 PM
Will be interesting to see what you do with them.  I must say though, that I don't like the design.  I don't care much for space marines in general, but I liked the look of the previous termies, particularly the helmets.  They made me think of badgers.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso November 03, 2016, 09:55:05 PM
I'm not a fan of the previous termies... but that's just how I roll (so I can understand that it is very much a taste thing) :)

Anyway... I have got some now and here is an assembled torso next to an existing Exo:

I reckon there's enough space for some stumpy legs under that torso :)

These are looking good. will be interesting to see how it progresses.

It will be another few weeks before I can get any hobby time in... I've just moved home and am in the process of getting some of the more immediate jobs done (like making things watertight and draft free... and emptying out all of the stuff the previous owners left behind).

Hopefully, these miniatures will get some love rather than languishing in the boxes they are packed in :( .

I am on terminal leave until mid January when I officially end my contract (on my birthday... YAY! Double celebration :) ).

I have a nice amount of time to sort stuff out and think about a new job...

... hopefully something I can sort out in February :o .

I've no idea what yet... but I'll pretty much try anything as long as I don't have to travel very far :)

It's been a while but here is the latest WIP for the Terminator suit. The head is loose (and will be replaced with a better one), the fists will get lightning claws, and the crotch/legs will be getting more armour... but it's the first WIP from my new house and I'm happy with it so far:

One step closer :) . The legs are finished and tabbed, ready to go for casting :) . As you can see from the picture, they are designed to fit in one way only (so adjustment would need to be made to turn the body, if you wanted to do that). I have also shown that the legs fit other bodies from the same kit... now it's just a case of getting them cast up :o ...

Thanks to SDKFZ (an excellent tank builder on another forum) and his excellent Hanomag scratchbuild for a Chimera... I have started converting a 1/35th Tamiya Hanomag half track. So far I have glued the top and bottom of the hull together and then cut down the centreline of the kit. I then cut out a segment about 2cm from each side. The idea is to shorten and widen the kit. So far so good. All the cutting has been done and I have cleaned things up. I have also put in a lot of battens so that I can join everything together (they still need trimming but they need to dry at the moment). The next job is to put in a 1cm spacer down the middle and then assemble the hull. Here is my little workspace while my house is in disarray:

Engine at the front makes it more vulnerable.  Better install some sort of reactive or ablative armor.  Unless that is the sections already on the front.  In which case; Good choice including reactive/ablative armor to protect the engine at the front.

It's a choose your own comment adventure story!  Who remembers those books?

Turn to thread page 7

Not that I disagree about the vulnerability factor, but in all fairness, the venerable M113 had its engine block up front, so its hardly ground breaking location for a rear access APC design...

Although the under-fuselage mounted exhaust pipes would probably require significant amounts of maintenance after any rough terrain work, and would be better with some sort of snorkel attachment for water crossing...

I really like this one though, but always did love the Panther tank...

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso February 13, 2017, 05:17:01 PM
I'm gald you like it :)

All the other stuff... it's a sci-fi tank... so I can come up with all sorts of explanations for the bits that could do with changing... but I won't :D

The Panther Russ is finished except for trimming the tracks (I'll do that when I paint it) and the Hanomag pattern Chimera is also finished apart from the side skirts (which are made but will need to be left off until the wheels are painted)... I am currently decorating the Wolverines :) . There will be pix when they are finished :) .

... I also need to sort out the legs for sale... Hmmm...
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso February 14, 2017, 12:52:51 PM
It's got to a point where I am going to end up messing them up because I am bored with them so, as far as they are concerned, the tank and transport are finished for now:

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso April 06, 2017, 10:16:28 AM
... bit of both really... but I really get a kick out of seeing a unit completed... I guess it's a bit like climbing what can only be perceived as a mountain and then reaching the summit, knowing that it's downhill all the way from then on :)

When I was working on my tunnel fighter Grymn, I didn't have the same problems because I didn't have such a structured idea of what I wanted to achieve... it was only after I had converted around half the troops (and painted them) that I started working on a structure and getting specific models converted. Fortunately, the tunnel fighters were mostly head swaps with a little bit of armour added to their backs... these Squats are a little more involved and more structured as well.

The good thing is that I can use my Tunnel Fighters as a good example of spending four years converting to end up with an army I am proud of (apart from the unfinished command vehicle... which is packed away somewhere... in amongst all the other unpacked boxes from the move... :( )...

The last pic doesn't really work does it.  Monkey arms.
The boots are a far sight better on the new sculpt but kind of remind me of platforms. (Much better sculpting though)
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso April 30, 2017, 09:35:06 AM
The only reason I have put together all the pictures is because people asked me too :)

I don't think that the two kits (Kharadron and old 1980's Squat) are compatible at all... however some people disagree but that is their choice. I personally won't be using any in my army and haven't really been enthused by them at all really... so they are staying in their box for now.

I think that, with a little effort, they could look great but that would mean bigger heads, sci-fi weapons and a toning down of the 'steampunk' elements... but I am not into doing that at the moment because I have plenty of more pressing things to get on with :)

Well... now I've 'scratched that itch', I can get back on track with a bit of sculpting so I am now 2 finished and one WIP, where Halfling snipers are concerned:

Is that a chaos dwarf head on the other cork?

Yep :) Very WIP at the moment... it's just a practice sculpt for a commission.

Four snipers finished, with a prone one on the cork:

Hopefully... if they are viable for casting (they should be... they'll be resin). I've talked to Rob over at Hysterical Games and warned him that they will be going his way at some point :)

Great snipers. I thought these were two separate photos and the new sculpt was a close up. Now I see it. Some sort of Ogre Sniper?

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...

The snipers have all had their basing tabs added:

They have been packed up and will be sent to my caster tomorrow, for casting in July/August (he's a busy chap). Once they are cast up, I will be able to sell some :) .
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso June 29, 2017, 11:22:05 AM
Work on the Ogre sniper continues, now that the Halflings have been sent off for casting. I have continued to bulk out the torso and add the muscle groups. It is almost a shame that all this will be covered over... but at least I have a good foundation to work on:

Next will be the lower back and then the feet and lower legs. Lots to do :) .

Still looking good.
Will the snipers be part of your own range?

I will be selling them myself, yes.

It appears that Photobucket is holding me to ransom. If I don't pay $399.99 a year, all of my photographs will remain as those photobucket place holders.

I will not be held to ransom so I will be looking for an alternative host. In the meantime, I apologise for the fact that all of my images are gone... and are unlikely to reappear.

I had no warning... the hosting update that apparently happened on 28th June has obviously come into effect. I now know why I have been seeing the place holders on so many forums.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake June 30, 2017, 07:33:42 AM
Really. Well that is $h!t. Do you reckon that has happened to everyones account (better check a few of my posts) I've been thinking of changing from photobucket for a while now as the amount of ads etc on it make it so slow to use.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...

I have seen quite a lot of it elsewhere...
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...

Glad I don't use it.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso July 01, 2017, 01:34:20 PM
Fortunately, the pictures still work if you 'right click and view image in a new tab' on each of the placeholders... so they aren't completely gone.

It doesn't make it any less infuriating though :(

Yeah this is across the board.  A few Etsy type earners have been knocked for six because of it, they don't earn enough to pay the fee's and after years of building a market Photobucket has decided to turn its users into income...

I suspect that an alternate hosting site will pop up and hopefully Photobucket will relent before losing it all because of their greed.

Seeing as sales have dried up, it makes sense to do something else with them :)

Anyway, here's a rough base-coat on my three Berserkers (count as Ministorum Priests):

The hammer is from a Mantic Forgeguard (in heavy powered armour) so it is definitely a chunk :) ... but I reckon a berserker can channel his inner rage to heft it in battle OK :)

It's a slight homage to a very old GW fantasy slayer... but I thought a pistol-club suited better than a pistol as a ranged weapon... and it helped to show just how mad he was :D

Now that I have some snipers, a Jokaero and some priests, it's high time I got my arse in gear and started painting some of the basic troops... so that is what I have done :) . Here is the first (rough base-coat) on the first squad of No.2 platoon:

I've started the next veteran squad. These will all have berets. The main weapons will be shotguns and meltaguns. There will be a comms trooper and the sgt will have upgraded close combat weapons (probably a bolt pistol and power weapon):

:) ... I think that the new miniature of Marbo has a pistol straight out of the film :)

My Marbo will be joined by Sgt Harker who, funnily enough, is sitting on my work table at the moment. He's getting a shoulder carried heavy bolter and... a tea-mug :)

I've also ordered some aerial transportation for them so they can 'get to da chopper Valkyrie' ;)

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso January 17, 2018, 09:16:06 AM
That is a nice looking kit.

I was quite surprised at how crisp it was... a very sharp kit. It is slightly smaller than I thought it would be but that is a good thing... it will fit my plans perfectly. I have also done some investigating and a Valkyrie can have a las-cannon... so I just need to leave one off the kit rather than having to scratch-build a multi laser... result! :)

I'll be tidying this up today and may well start assembly as well... it's almost a given because I am really quite excited about this kit :)

He's a happy looking chap.
That sculpt in the background looks like a Hordes Troll... in space.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso January 23, 2018, 10:22:01 AM
I wanted him to be jovial... smiling and chatting away while he drinks his brew (from an old shell casing). His face still needs a lot of work but he's going to get a shorter beard than most of my Squats because he has a chewing-tobacco habit and it would mess up a long beard :)

The Frogulon in the background is highly inspired by the Hordes Trollbloods... but he isn't supposed to be a copy, he has a big fin/frill on his head for starters. I just like the look of the Trollbloods but don't want to buy any fantasy miniatures.

+++EDIT+++

In other news, I have been working on a sculpt for a competition over on Facebook. It's a Squat Berserker (still WIP):

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake February 20, 2018, 09:46:02 AM
Very nice. So will you be getting the new squat from GW?
On a sculpting note, I've just been experimenting with Beesputty that Andy sells. I think I'm sold on this product over others.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso February 20, 2018, 11:20:43 AM
I will get the new Necromunda Squat when he's released... not because I want to but because I have to :)

I do not like Beesputty. I have never tried it but I don't like the way it looks grainy and that it has a tendency to crack when you bake it.

I have decided that I am happy with Green Stuff, Brown Stuff and the odd bit of milliput here and there... and all of those are air drying :)

If Beesputty works for you, keep practicing :)
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: beefcake February 21, 2018, 03:48:24 AM
The thing I like about it is I always take too mix up too much putty of other stuff and also I can just get straight into sculpting with this. I find the mixing puts me off despite it not taking that much time. I shifted from GS to GS and milliput which was nice as well. I haven't had the cracking issues yet but slowly cooling I hear is the way to go.

Is the berserker having anything else in the other hand?
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso February 21, 2018, 09:07:08 AM
The berserker is just having the hammer and a holstered pistol. That way, it can become a fantasy miniature simply by converting the holster into another pouch :)

I hope it goes well for you and you get your work out there in 'shop land' :) ... It's always cool when that happens.

In today's little update, a top hatch, handle, front vent and some eyebrows have been added. Just for the record, the arms and top weapons are not glued in place yet... and the bodies are not attached to the base (so the pose hasn't been fixed yet) :) :

I have now primed the dreads:

Now that I have got as far as I can with them, I thought I'd see what I could find in the loft and managed to uncover my Bullgryn squad. Only one of them had been converted... and he didn't have any weapons but luckily, I had thought about that earlier and bagged a lot of Bullgryn bits from EBay. With the bits already available, it was merely a case of a bit of sawing, drilling, pinning and gluing and I soon ended up with this:

He's a converted, Mantic, Dreadball Ork with GW weapons. He still needs some putty work to fill gaps and sort out a few niggles... but he's pretty much there :) . I have another four sat in a box beside me so I have enough for a squad of five. Tidy :) .

Once they are converted, that will be the first section of the tank company complete. Then another two lots of three and a command tank :) .

Just a quick post to show off the second painted tank:

The third tank has been washed and will start this week. It'll be getting a visible tank commander to denote it as a lead tank but he won't be a tank commander, rules wise... he'll just be a normal tank (he'll just have a normal helmet rather than a significantly leader-like hat/helmet).

See? I can paint things occasionally :)

I've got a little bit further on the armour now. The platoon leader has been sculpted so I can now get on with spraying the turret and finishing the painting :) :

Still no decals though :(

The first command tank is coming along:

Time flies when you are having fun :) .

I won't be touching the mech until I have finished my tank company and with that in mind, I have started work on the next three. First, I converted a bunch of pens and hair ties into some plasma Cannons:

Then I washed all the sprues and assembled what I could before I needed to spray anything:

Finally, there was a break in the weather so I managed to get a single tank and all of its components, sprayed up before the can ran out of paint:

From now on, I will be back to painting everything one at a time :)
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Steel Penguin June 02, 2018, 05:34:25 PM
that is a very clever idea Inso
and like the previous versions looking good so far
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso June 03, 2018, 04:17:58 PM
Cheers :)

Now the third tank is finished (apart from the commander and decals) and the first of the plasma-tanks is base-coated, ready for a wash:

Hopefully, the first plasma-tank will be ready for decals by the end of the week... but who knows?

Just decals to go on the first platoon... but I reckon I'll leave the decals until all the tanks are painted :) :

Here's a high quality (Windows Paint) mock-up of the markings for my tank company:

I have all the decals I need for all ten tanks. The yellow shape changes for each platoon/command so there will be 3 triangles, 3 squares and 3 circles with a diamond as the company commander.

I have all the decals except the names... but I have LOTS of decals which can be altered for that... or I can just paint the names (so they are properly individual).

Love those plasma cannons.

@ beefcake - Love those plasma cannons.

(I can't quote for some reason)

I am always happiest when I can find a simple solution to a problem. These were a simple solution but it took me a while to locate what I was looking for... and the hair ties were a complete surprise... so it was win-win :)
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso June 09, 2018, 05:40:31 PM
The first of the plasma-tigers is done (except for decals):

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso June 19, 2018, 06:16:30 PM
With the fifth tank finished (apart from decals), I have assembled and basecoated the sixth tank... but it needed a commander so Anja had to be sculpted. Now she is nagging me about why her tank isn't finished yet...

Not my best sculpt but I am hoping that the painting process will help her to become less masculine :)
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso June 24, 2018, 05:59:23 PM
I needed a break from painting tanks... and to be honest, it's a bit humid for painting so I decided to build a few Halfling Snipers:

This is three squads of ten, all washed, cleaned up, filled and based, ready for priming :) .

The good thing is that this means I have ticked off three boxes on my organisation chart... and three platoons now have their ten-strong sniper units :) .
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso June 25, 2018, 09:34:54 PM
... and then there were six :) :

With the completion of this little platoon, I now have six Leman-Russ proxy tanks finished (apart from decals). Now I have to start all over again with the next three and they will be getting Battle-Cannons :) .

Looking really good. The tank girl is great and the PJ really works.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso June 27, 2018, 05:29:18 PM
Cheers :) . It looks a bit more feminine than before... but note a huge amount. That said, I think she looks like an older, gnarly tank commander so I'm happy :)

I have now started work on the next tank... the first of the Battle-Cannons...

... only four to go... only four to go... only four to go...

I am starting to see green all the time now :o :D!

: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Steel Penguin June 27, 2018, 05:56:43 PM
look on the bright side, its only green, your not doing anything like Ambush, or Berlin block   :yup:
but as ever looking very good .
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso June 27, 2018, 07:11:42 PM

did you finish all that army / warband off in the end ?

That would be a resounding no :) .
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Steel Penguin June 29, 2018, 05:30:52 PM
:paranoid2:   actually  why am I asking, do we ever finish an army off?
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso June 30, 2018, 12:24:01 PM
In fairness... I have finished a couple of armies...

... but I lost the will to live with the Mondrians so it ended with a bump :) .

Luckily, I always have lots of things to keep me awake at night... things like the remaining four tanks for the tank company :) :

The one of the left is waiting for an Agrax wash, the one next to it is waiting for priming/base-coating, the one next to that is waiting for a commander to be sculpted before Priming/base-coating and the opne on the right is the overall company command tank and is waiting for a commander and hull weapon to be sorted out before priming/base-coating.

The weather has been humid so I have avoided most of the painting/sculpting and have just been assembling and gap-filling. I think that I will need to replenish a few paints (namely the green spray) to finish them all... but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
: Re: Another Space Dwarf conversion thread...
: Inso July 09, 2018, 08:48:29 AM
Everything has slowed down a bit... mostly due to the lovely sunny weather. That said, I am still doing bits and bobs. Currently, I have two tanks all dirtied up, ready for stippling:

With the tank commander for the third tank finished:

His tank is mostly sprayed green, apart from the turret and a few bits of equipment (that will get sorted today :) ).

This particular tank commander is looking at his digital map while wondering how the hell he ended up so far from where he should be :) .

He's one of my 'finished, not perfect sculpts' that have a number of things that I know I could have done better (around the eyes, for starters) but I wanted to get him sculpted so I didn't break my flow with the painting side of things. With him finished, I have progressed and all of the tanks in his platoon, are now decal ready. I just need to finish painting the tank commander :) :

Cheers :) .

I've started on the company commander now. She's going to be getting some large speakers and a flag-pole attached to the turret and will be talking into a hand-held microphone.

When trying to decide what I was going to sculpt, I put an 'ideas' post up on Facebook. What a mistake that was. No sooner had I mentioned that it was a female, I got 'putting make-up on' and 'doing her lipstick'... then when I called it out, it got offensive so I deleted the topic.

I hate trolls... especially bigoted ones :( .

Indeed.

It has sort of helped to stall progress as well. I have only got as far as adding the speakers and flagpole and sculpting her torso...

... but I ordered another tank and have started something new (in order to keep things ticking over):

It's at a very early stage but I reckon you'll know what it will become :) .

A small amount of progress on the proxy Chimera:

Just weapons to go now. I will be going for Heavy-Bolters in the turret and the hull because, I asked around and the verdict was pretty unanimous :D!

Onward and upwards...

The company command tank has stopped. I can't even look at it for now... every time I mix putty, I can't bring myself to use it so it gets wasted. With that in mind, I felt that I needed something to keep things ticking over and I suddenly realised that I had the perfect thing... my Spearhead Detachment.

My Spearhead detachment consists of the following things:

HQ - Tank commander.
Elite - Engineseer and servitors in a Chimera transport.
Heavy Support - 3 tanks (battle-cannon).
Heavy Support - 3 tanks (punisher cannon).
Heavy Support - 3 tanks (plasma cannon).

Seeing as I already have most of the list finished, I just need to finish the Engineseer unit and the tank commander... seeing as I can't work on the tank commander, I have dug out the Engineseer and servitors to work on:

Before:

For work in progress, I will refer you to the relevant blog page:

It would appear that I have finally started to paint a few miniatures again...

So... now I am painting things, I thought I'd give some Halflings a go:

These are attached to the first Infantry platoon so I have dug out the command elements to paint... namely a Primaris Psyker (Jedi Beastman), Platoon Commander and Command Squad.

I have just primed the troops and have started to paint the Psyker (because he was already started).

This painting push will be to try and complete the whole platoon; which consists of:

Primaris Psyker.
Platoon Commander.
Command Squad.
Infantry Squad.
Infantry Squad.
Heavy Weapon Squad.
Armoured Sentinel Sqn (3 walkers).
Chimeras (4 vehicles).

The good thing is that the troops have a lot of colours on them so they will be entertaining to paint :) . Hopefully, I'll be able to get the platoon done (I may stall on the Chimeras because they haven't been converted yet... the rest is all ready for paint).

This week, after finishing the Snipers, I got on with painting the Primaris Psyker for the first platoon:

I've also started painting the Platoon Commander and his Command Squad. They are still WIP but there is a pic over at the blog:

I've got a little further now... they have been washed and are ready for the highlighting now :) .
