That's my Plan A entry... with a couple of resin bits still to come.

I normally undercoat in black but I've done these in white because I want the final scheme to be quite bright and cartoony. I cant get over how much more detail I can see with the light undercoat! Damn, does that mean i have to colour in all the bit I can now see that i could have safely avoided before?

Seriously, either i've rapidly deteriorated in painting skill in the last year since i painted anything or Kev is getting much much better at small detail! My brush feels like a cotton bud (qtip) and i'm looking down the wrong end of a telescope whilst trying to hold the figure still whilst sat on the washing machine during the spin cycle!

On a slightly different note I think i've had to spend longer cleaning up these figures than any other hasslefree figures i've ever painted. The mold lines are not terrible but ive spent about 3 hours cleaning up 10 figures and now they are primed I can see loads of bits i've missed :(

Do you use reading glasses yet? You might need them for close work - most of us get there.

I already wear glasses /contacts. I'm about a -8 in each eye so pretty much anything beyond a foot away is out of focus for me. I suffer from floaters quite badly too.

Good looking crew there. I'll be interested in seeing how this turns out. Do you have a name for it? By the way, what do you mean by floaters. It makes me think your toilet isn't flushing quite like it should.
: Re: Brandlins UDoD 2012 WIP thread
: Inso September 24, 2012, 09:29:09 AM
When you are tired, if you happen to be short sighted, you tend to get 'floaters'. They are difficult to explain but they look a bit like transparent veins that float around just within your field of view. When you look at them they float away but return when you don't look at them. It is very common amongst short sighted people but they are annoying... especially when you are tired (I get them a lot too :) ).
: Re: Brandlins UDoD 2012 WIP thread
: beefcake September 24, 2012, 10:28:28 AM
In that case I get some floaters too. I always thought it was just a bit of dust or on my eyeball or something. Goes to show how much I know. Only tiny little things though.

Things improved this weekend ...

I came up with a name for this piece:

"Shortly after Mystery Inc discovered that the Brain Devouring Zombie of Hawkins Manor wasn't Old Man Jacoby the Caretaker in disguise, Velma instigated the 'Shoot First, Unmask Later' protocol."

I suspect this may not fit on the base though, so I'll probably shorten it to:

"Shoot First, Unmask Later"

And i managed to slap a bit of paint on a couple of scoobies...

(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dRx76VIpcwM/UGhH0t61rkI/AAAAAAAADgE/__Ee-1vImJE/s320/scooby01.jpg)    (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iT7CqKrA5Vs/UGhKBGgeL_I/AAAAAAAADgk/SJDzxfZHhko/s320/scooby05.jpg)

Apologies not the best pictures. I promise my photography will improve.

Thank you all.

The pictures are bothering me though I cannot seem to get the focus on macro setting working on my newer fancier camera. its definately a user problem though! In reality there is a more contrast in the skin and im not sure it isn't too much contrast though... hmmm  Perhaps I can always make the final submission pictures blurry too!

Not sure its quick work - two figures in a week? i guess that's lightning quick for me. Still have eight figures plus the van plus the display base to do.

The Scoobys are the dog danglies (half-intended pun). Seems that staying one year off the brushes has done you good, because these look like your best paintjobs to date (excepting your grymn vehicles, but I think painting vehicles and painting minis are two different things).

Floaters are little bits of protein left over from the retina they are usually nothing and sometimes go away. However if your short sighted it can get worse over time which is why it is important to get your eyes checked every year.

With the standard of your paint-jobs, you'll be able to sort that out with some freehand in a short while so don't give up hope... even if you feel like it at the moment :(.

Put it out of your mind and paint some of the characters to cheer yourself up a bit... take your mind off it.

: Brandlin October 14, 2012, 02:17:51 PM
Thank you Inso.

I'm not as confident as you are though. The blue on the scooby van was a disaster. It went on with the airbrush a bit thick so it didn't adhere very well to the gloss varnish. But mostly the problem was that the temporary spray adhesive that I applied to stick the paper masks held too well and left a glue residue on the surface that i could only shift by rubbing off the blue as well.  :blub:

Anyway I'm painting shaggy at the moment so I hope there might be another update tonight.

What I have noticed though is how many shifts in colour there have been in the gang's outfits and hair. I'm guessing from series to series. I was going to do something that tried to be a authentic to the original but i've settled for just doing it with the colours i have to hand!

What I've also noticed is that Mystery Inc is basically 3 Gingers and a blonde!

Thank you for the comments guys.

Looks like you managed to paint pretty perfect eyes in the end. Lovely colours on everything. Daphne's legs could look a little smoother but that pink looks really irritating to paint right.

A long way from perfect but poor photography helps!  Yes Daphne's legs are the worst bit of anything i've painted on this diorama, and yes the pink is a NIGHTMARE. So I'm calling it done rather than starting again!

The only other update today is that the van is stripped, cleaned and undercoated white again. I may get the windows sprayed tonight and the green on. But then I'm away next weekend so I wont able to do anything for almost 2 weeks!

I have bought some Frisk Film to do the masking, and some decal paper to do the orange bits. This raises an interesting question. In the picture below (left) the colours are separated by black lines; that's because its a CARTOON. I think the black lines give a lot of definition and without the separation (picture right) you don't get the same impact (especially around the orange hippy flowers).  I was planning on doing the black lines around the orange wording and the flowers as part of the decals, but do you think its worth black lining in the lines between the green and blue or should i do without?

(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CQge3xkNimc/UHGbFfRtibI/AAAAAAAADho/2TxHFQSI1BI/s400/mystery-machine002.jpg) (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-coLG8-3odRQ/UIQXmHduUcI/AAAAAAAADkw/Rpc5y1aDRtc/s778/mystery-machine003.jpg)

I *could* black line in afterwards with a fine tip pen or try and paint it in but i'm not sure i have hands that steady and after the last aorted attempt at painting this i'm loathe to get that far and then screw it up...

decisions decisions...

I'd go with black lines on the decals. It's got to be easier and more consistent than manually lining in. And I think you're right; the black lining will make a huge (positive) difference,

Hi gangrel. I agree about the black lining. However the green and blue are sprayed on, not decals so I'll have to black line that boundary afterwards. I'm asking if that's worth doing? I think I already know the answer though :(

At the risk of teaching my proverbial grandmother to suck eggs, I always find thinning black acrylic with black ink makes for a good black lining paint.

As with anything mini-painting-related, it comes with the standard 'it works for me, but it might not suit you so try on something unmportant first' disclaimer.

...also, if you want to cheat a little bit, sometimes I have used a .005 technical pen to do very fine lining on minis, and also to do eyes - makes it a bit easier to dot in the pupils. Your results may vary!

...for what it's worth, I'm really loving all of what you've got going here so far! Can't wait to see the finished diorama!  :boing:

To paint eyes, I firstly give the socket a coat of black or very dark brown. When this is thoroughly dry, I take a 5/0 brush then paint either side of where the pupil will be with a light mix of blue/grey.
It takes a steady hand and a bit of practice, but it's JAGU all the way to the bank with this method.

Thoroughly pee-d off.

Have spent 5 hours trying to get my airbrush working. I've cleaned and cleaned and cleaned it. Including with tiny brushes and my ultrasonic cleaner. But I cannot get it to spray consistently for more than about 5 seconds.

I can't see any obvious damage to the needle or the nozzle but I'm inclined to think that's the only option left.  So that's another 30 and a lost week to get spares.

Oh, and the van needs stripping again.

I just wish I had enough time to actually get into a rhythm with this project. ...

As I've just had a vomitting bug, the first in I don't know how many years, I could have painted that colour scheme rather easily... except silverbeet as the main colour.   :puke2: still don't like the memories.

Right....

New needle and needle-nozzle procured for airbrush and installed.

Van stripped - again...

Newly designed...'modifications' for the van installed.

Fred painted... only to find half way through an enormous mold line (it looks sufficiently large for me to have to inform the geological society as a potential new mountain range being thrust up from the earths crust as the Welsh and English continental plates collide!)

... and now I'm out of time and have to go and "be a Dad" (a job for which apparently i am uniquely qualified which is odd, as i don't remember taking the exam, let alone the classes!)

Ho- (and indeed) hum...

More updates next weekend I guess...

Bad luck about the mould line on Fred.

Yes it's a smudge grrr... The frisk film still lifted a little of the green.

Yes, decals for the signage and flowers, and ink for the black lining.

Plus... A surprise on the other side... ;-)

Thoroughly demoralised with this.

One thing I didn't mention when I posted the decals picture is that I managed to put the masks on backwards. So the green lower section should be reversed, which also means I had to put the orange flowers in the wrong places, and as a composition, they really throw my eye when I see them.

However, the bigger problem is that the miniatures I ordered from fenris back in October still have not arrived! So I think it's unlikely I'm going to be able to complete this in time.

I think it only fair for me to pull out now.

My comment on the matter is 'adapt and overcome'.

Do you really need the Fenris miniatures or can other miniatures from you collection fill the gap?
Does the Mystery Machine have to be perfect or just a representation of the vehicle?
You've painted most of the gang... how much more is there to go?

You still have 12 days... put together a base, finish painting stuff and get a diorama made!

...don't be such a bleeping perfectionist, you perfectionist ;)!

Remember, this ISN'T a painting contest, it is a diorama contest. Yes, the paint jobs will reflect a bit in the voting but it is the story/theme that will win the day.

I think you are looking too deeply at things. Tidy up the van with a brush and it will look fine.

Just to encourage you to keep going, I will post starting pics of a few miniatures this weekend and I will have a finished diorama by the closing date.

If I can do that, you can finish yours!

The challenge is on... if you are up to it

: Brandlin December 12, 2012, 05:35:09 PM
It's not a case of perfectionism. Yes there are some bits of the van that annoy me, but ill live with them.

I still have a LOT of work to do, and don't have base accessories and miniatures I ordered 8 weeks ago. Plus in the next 12 days I'm working away most of it.

I don't have the bits from fenris, I don't have time and I don't have the desire to do something less than I planned.

Why is it if others don't finish something it's an acceptable artistic temperament... Losing the muse? I get accused of being a perfectionist and giving up?

No it isn't that. It's just a bit of enthusiasm.

There are only 9 people in this (one of them is me) and to lose one is a blow :(... and I am keen to see what you come up with.

I am trying to cheekily motivate you with a bit of competition in the vain hope it will work.

If it is impossible, then so be it... you won't get any stick from me (I had a huge period of complete hobby vagueness so I would be a hypocrite if I did give you stick).

AND, you can't say you are not a perfectionist because we both know you are :D (and it isn't a bad thing!).

It just seems a real shame for you to have finished so many of the miniatures and they don't have anywhere to go :(.

If I accuse people of things, then they know it... don't see a bit of cheeky goading as an accusation of anything ;).

OK, only 13 months late, Fred is finished - picture to follow.

Now the big question... for the Zombie elements to gore or not to gore?

Should the zombie survivor figures remain true to their clean comic origins or should i gore them up? And if you think I should, how much? a small smudge of red here and there or a bucket ful of tamiya clear red?

Bear in mind that i have never applied gore to anything before...

If you've never done gore before, probably better to keep them "clean" maybe do a couple of test zombies first & see what looks good.

A little gore goes a long way, remember. I've seen too many minis go overboard with the goop.

I think I would probably agree with everyone's suggestion to keep things clean. ...but if you *do* decide to go with gore, a little goes a long way. ...and if you paint some muddled dark and bright reds underneath where you'll be painting with TCR, it gives you a much more natural look than just putting the TCR onto clean skin and clothes. Can't wait to see how this turns out!

Well done! (You could add a touch of blood to the van [on the post-apocalyptic side], easier to do without overwhelming the model than on a figure.) Perhaps a touch on the weapons too?

Excellent work (as always), Brandlin! I think it works fine as is, despite being an unrepentant gore hound. If you do add gore, then do so sparingly.

Oh, wow, that looks fantastic! Really nice work. (^_^) Only thing I can think of to change might be the cracks in the window on the apocalyptic side - I think they'd look better in white, rather than black. Cracks in a window tend to show up as brighter, I think. ...I normally wouldn't nit-pick too much, but it's *such* a great piece! Very cool idea, having it all on one base. Cheers!

Is Felicity about to whack Hamlet on the butt?

When I came to position the post apocalptic figures i really struggled to pose them how I wanted - they take up a lot more room than the 'normal' side. You're right it does look like Felicity is about to introduce the business end of the baseball bat to Hamlet's rear end. What I noticed before that though was that Barney's gaze seems to be on Felicity's rear end. Maybe he's not as gay as i thought!

Oh, wow, that looks fantastic! Really nice work. Doh!

I knew the crack looked wrong, but couldn't figure out why. I had some grid/mesh cut to cover the window but can't find it and wanted to finish this so went with the crack as an afterthought.  I might fiddle with it and fix it.

Thank you all for the positive comments.  I'm not happy with the van - despite all my precision and efforts early on, the decals have rubbed off in places and the black lining looks scruffy.

However I have vowed to finsih stuff and move on rather than just sitting at my desk looking at it imagining how awesome it would be if my talent matched my imagination...
